Angry gone for a couple of days maybe

Recommended Posts

well...with all the new things I am doing lately, namely making vid tutorials, I have finally realized after the last vid (which at one point was taking up 1.8GB of memory to make...), that it is now time to move away from a single core cpu (my beloved, trusty, supa ovaclocka San Diego 4000+) and 2GB of memory and into a professional workstation.

Since i don't have the money for a Mac (after blowing almost $2000 on Adobe Premier Pro 2.5 and Camtasia Studio), I am going to have to rebuild my main rig with an X2 4400+ and 4x1024 of OCZ PC4000 Gold.

I'll probably also toss in the XFX 7800GTX card (waiting for my case-cut guy to arrive to cut me a second fillport hole for a second, separate loop just for the big giant 7800 waterblock that I snagged from DangerDen), and leave my Audigy2ZS Gamer card in...and I am trying to decide whether I want to move up to THREE Raptor 36GB hdd's in RAID-0, or go with 2 Hitachi 80GB SATA II drives...

I will also be dropping in my OCZ Powerstream 600w power supply

HOPEFULLY...this is a good enough upgrade for the software I will be using (learning lol) as well as fragging you monkies in Day of Defeat: Source and other games (got to have my playtime)

Normally I would just drop a new cpu in and add some memory...but this rig has been going since January, and I feel its time to finally format and reinstall, and just adding a dual-core cpu is a hassle on an existing WinXP install that is set for only a single cpu. Doing it the hard way (reinstalling) should allow me to come away with a good clean install without any problems (unlike dropping a dual-core cpu in on a single-core XP install).

I never dreamed when I started this job that it would take me this far, and make me learn so much crap that I didn't really want to learn (but now that I am learning it, I am eating it up and asking for more).

A lot of you guys get to build your 'DREAM MACHINE' and I always am supportive of it, and it makes me happy that I've done my little tiny part to help you all along on your journey. Normally I just build whatever I have and use it and upgrade bits and pieces as they come in. I have not done a total revamp of everything since the NF3...even the NF4 was not really a total revamp...I just used most of what I already had and it was not a big job like this is going to be (thankfully I have a CM Stacker case with mega room inside to mess around!).

I would also go with the Oskar Wu Crossfire board...but it is just too new, and my trusty, original, pre-production SLI-DR has been nothing but a total workhorse...I have beaten it to death to the point where it takes almost 60 seconds to even post from a cold start now, but still every day, 16+ hours a day, it does everything I ask it to do and never complains, and has froze-up maybe a total of 3 times since January.

It would normally take only a couple hours at most to redo everything, but this is one of those important builds where I MUST have a rock solid, 110% stable rig, and the X2 4400+ @ 2200Mhz is going to need to be clocked to it's usual 2650Mhz...that cpu has been sitting in a test rig for months and months, and it always amazes me when I test out things like dvd ripping, audio encoding, all the great things that the Pentium4 w/Hyperthreading normally does for me...my X2 is like a Delta III rocket...it whips my P4 in every respect...and it is finally time to get with it as this software badly needs the dual core power (along with 4GB of memory geez...who woulda thunk it?)

so this is my little blog, and also to let you know that I probably won't be available for at least 2 days as I have to make sure this rig is everything I need it to be, and won't crash the first time I power up Adobe to bust out a 1GB video for production lol.

during this time, I will be watching the tutorial videos on how to use the entire Adobe suite...which means that I will be still overwhelmed to the point of probably wanting to bite down on that cyanide capsule in my hollow tooth lol.

The mods here should be able to take care of your every need for a while (we built this forum so that it could run by itself if we all decided to take off to Tahiti for a month long vacation).

If you have sent me a motherboard to test, don't worry...I will still be working on them during this time...I just won't have access to my main rig to do email, forum stuff, etc (I do have enough computers, so you might see me around a bit...but I've kinda got myself in over my head with all the customer machines that have been sent to me lately so I need to focus on knocking those out and getting all the way back having zero around to fool with so I can concentrate on this Crossfire and NF4 Expert tutorial/support stuff that is going to be ultra important to everyone).

also note that our local pro hockey team's season begins on Wednesday...so I MUST get everything done and soon!!!

/end blog for the day

Great to see you spend some time on your own special build. Have fun with the new build and I will look forward to the eventual results.

4X1024 PC4000 OCZ Gold? Holy Mother of our Savior! You have serious graphics needs that only professional help may cure!

Another 7800 and you *might* need another 600 watt supply.

Good luck!

Charles

Travis, if you have any problems like windows installation, no boot issues, wrong flashing, setting up raid arrays, system lock-ups, game crashings, ram timings... you know we're ready to help you as street members. Just open a thread under related section, hehe

Please say Angry that you're gonna do it pic by pic?

haha no...i thought about it...but then I decided that I would have to cut out too much cursing, yelling, screaming, beating, hammering, kicking, and then more cursing ;)

lol how did I know this would be posted by someone eventually hahaha

she's running prime like a monster @ 4x1024, 3-4-7-4, 2T, 2200Mhz stock at the moment...spent until 5:30AM putting it together again...

decided on 3 Raptor 36GB in RAID-0, 64k Stripe, the back two partitions are 16k clusters, the OS partition is default cluster. She does ATTO @ about 200MB/s writes and reads on the C partition, but its all over the map...the D and E partitions are steady at about 175MB/s.

HD Tach on the other hand...is very odd...it shows only a steady read at about 80MB/s and bursts up to 179MB/s.

I just ordered two more Hitachi 80GB SATA II drives, and I think I might test it real quick with 3x Hitachi's again (already did this once in the sticky at the top of the Off Topic here in the benchmark hdd thread).

I can tell you this...for those that complain about 2T....when you have an X2 4400+ and 4GB of memory...and 3 Raptors in RAID...there's no freakin way you can notice any performance drop...no way at all...and even at default speeds with a 7800GTX @ 490/1320....it scores almost 28000 on 3dmark01...and I aint even started on the cpu (going to get her in the Stock Speed Database for 24+ hours first).

anyway...got to go do some work for the hockey team today while this mother is priming. I'll be around a little here and there but not a lot (like anyone cares anyway) so see you when I see you...
