Almost Works but Ram is a pain.

Recommended Posts

I just earlier this week did the bi-annual upgrade to my computer. After trial and error I have managed to get everything working in it except for the RAM. I have two sticks of OCZ 1 Gigabyte (each) ram, however whenever I have both of them in the mobo at the same time the computer will not post. I just flashed my BIOS with the most current update, and the chips individually can power and run the computer, so in that regards they dont seem corrupt although I have yet to run memtest on either of the sticks. I know a lot about computers for a joe average (I put together my own machine) however I do not know very much about RAM timing, etc. So I have not posted that level of technical information. I honestly believe it is just a setting in BIOS that I have to change, or possibly a jumper on the motherboard that I have to switch. If any further information is required to accurately identify the problem and solution, I will post it as long as you can tell me what information you are seeking. Almost forgot, I don't know if it will help ID the problem, but the computer will only boot to windows if it has a single ram chip in either slots two or four. Thanks for your time.

System Specs:

Antec 500w Power Supply

NF4 SLI-DR with 6/23-3 BIOS

2 GB OCZ RAM

4400 Clawhammer (non OC'd)

Geforce 7800GTX (possibly OC'd?)

Crappy Network Card

What version are the OCZ ram modules? if they are OCZ Platinum here are the settings below. Are you placing the ram in the two orange slots? Have you tried them in the yellow slots? Is the Antec 500w PSU a native 24 pin power supply or a 20 pin.? There should be no jumpers to configure on your setup unless you are using two video card.

Yes, as far as I know it is a 24 pin Power Supply. Although, 4 of the pins are removable to make it compatible with a 20...But the manual refers to it as a 24. Also, the ram is platinum. Tried all of the different slots. Im waiting for my roommate to wake up before trying your settings that way if I screw up my cursing doesnt wake him up. Hoping for the best, and regardless of the outcome thank you for your speedy reply. Out of curiosity, is this a common problem with this Ram and Mobo setup?

The NF4 boards do tend to get on quite well with OCZ ram, its only cheap ram and in some case Corsair ram that the board doesn't seem to get on with.

BTW you need to add a sig with your system details or your posts might get deleted

Hmm..I tried those BIOS settings, and it will still get to windows with only one of the chips in. But it keeps giving me a beep and not even activating the monitor as soon as I try and boot with both sticks in. Could it be a different setting in BIOS I'm overlooking?

If you run one orange and one yellow, they aren't in dual channel, right? What's the point then?

your modules might not be compatible with dual channel

so this could be the cause of your problem

you could also do opposites

Dimm 1 = Yellow = Channel A

Dimm 2 = Orange = Channel A

Dimm 3 = Yellow = Channel B

Dimm 4 = Orange = Channel B

try using the opposite slots (so u get 1 on each channel) this might help .... (slot 1 + 4 or 2 + 3)
