blinch Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 First of all thank you for that great forum!!! Can someone help me choosing some hardware for my new PC? I want to buy a DFI Lanpart NF4 Ultra, an Athlon 64 Venice 3000+, an ANTEC TruePower2 PSU, and a case with a least 2*120mm fans (intake+exhaust). First: Is that choice a good choice? Second: What power do I need? I have 3 possibilities 380,430 and 480W??? Third and most important: What RAM do I have to buy. I want 2*512Mb (knowing I'm limited by the x9 multiplier of the 3000+) I have these choices: Corsair TWINX1024-3200XL, Corsair TWINX1024-3200XLPRO, Corsair TWINX1024-3200C2, Corsair TWINX1024-3200C2PRO, OCZ Platinum Serie, OCZ Gold Serie GX, OCZ Gold Serie, anything else ??? I'll try to overclock to the max...and I don't play a lot, so it's more for business use what is the best choice? Thank you for your help
TheFlowerKing Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 First : Seems good, dunno about the psu though, not my area. Second : As much power as you can. Third : Some tccd/tcc5 ram if you want to use a 3000+ and a 9x multi.
saswok Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 what games do you play? for business use you probably wont need to oc unless you are in the video and graphics industry. for 24-7 use, maybe a moderate oc. if you play or plan on playing future games, i would recomend getting 2 x 1gb kit that overclocks well like crucial ballistix. the ballistix will be future proof and you will have two slots open this is a good thing trust me. you will be bf2 ready this is a good thing also, try this game if you havnt yet. psu - best budget i would recommend fortron blue 500watt like 70-80$ online high end like an ocz power 520-600watt. video card - all depends what games you play but an ati x800 pro is 220$ at newegg right now and will work well for all games right now. now if u want to future proof and fly on all the games prolly the 7800 gtx by nvidia i think you can actually get 2 of those if you get sli board, i think they are sli ready? 2 will cost about a grand you did say in your post "dream system" right? lol! cpu cooler - xp-90c with a panaflo fan for 35$ or you could go with a water cooling for around 220$ make sure the power supply is 500watts plus period and 24 pin native. some would say to get the 3200+ for the 10 multi but either way you will be fine. be careful its addictive, i ended up buying all the nicer stuff eventually and my son was happy cuz he got upgraded. if i could do it over again i would have just bought nicer stuff and saved some money in the long run! Guest nomad Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 For a good case I am really impressed with the Thermaltake Armor. The black is a bit heavy but has the best airflow I have ever seen and is great for filtering dust. I have 2 Panflo 120mm "Ultras" on a rheobus and run them quite high, and my case is dust free. It is pretty solid as well and easy to work on. The Coolermaster Stacker is another case I would want. I couldnt find one locally, so I got the Tt Armor. Gorgias-Flux Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 There are cheaper PSUs out there for sure, but the reason these forums have a stickied post on reccomended power supplies is because prior to that there were so very many posts about people having PSU related issues. I would reccomend spending some money on a good PSU. I love my Enermax so quiet, so clean, but make your own choice. Here is the list: http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread...+power+supplies Here is a step by step build guide that I followed, it is stickied in the NF4 MOBO Area. (Which you should go and read if you are going to build one of these.) http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6615 Good luck, now go read the NF4 Forums to get an idea on how to build. Believe me, you are a long way off from Overclocking the machine. These things are wonderful time sinks.

blinch Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 Thank you for this long and clear answer!!! what games do you play? It's a shame but I don't play games...for business use you probably wont need to oc unless you are in the video and graphics industry. I'll do a lot of video editing, dvd to divx conversions and so... for 24-7 use, maybe a moderate oc. if you play or plan on playing future games, i would recomend getting 2 x 1gb kit that overclocks well like crucial ballistix. These are impossible to find in Switzerland  Do you have another advice? What can I buy to reach multi 9 (3000+) * 300Mhz = 2.7Ghz (my dream...)? the ballistix will be future proof and you will have two slots open this is a good thing trust me. you will be bf2 ready this is a good thing also, try this game if you havnt yet. psu - best budget i would recommend fortron blue 500watt like 70-80$ online high end like an ocz power 520-600watt. What about Antec TruePower? video card - all depends what games you play but an ati x800 pro is 220$ at newegg right now and will work well for all games right now. Much too expensive!!! I'll probably buy an X600 caus' I don't need much 3D power... now if u want to future proof and fly on all the games prolly the 7800 gtx by nvidia i think you can actually get 2 of those if you get sli board, i think they are sli ready? 2 will cost about a grand you did say in your post "dream system" right? lol! My dream system is to reach 2.7Ghz with a 3000+ and beat a Pentium 4 3.4Ghz in professionnal tasks for half the price of it if possible... cpu cooler - xp-90c with a panaflo fan for 35$ or you could go with a water cooling for around 220$ make sure the power supply is 500watts plus period and 24 pin native. I take the note some would say to get the 3200+ for the 10 multi but either way you will be fine. be careful its addictive, i ended up buying all the nicer stuff eventually and my son was happy cuz he got upgraded. if i could do it over again i would have just bought nicer stuff and saved some money in the long run! I want to try to reach 2.7Ghz with my 3000+ There are quite a few out there that will do what you need (300MHz @ 2.5-4-3). Geil One S, multiple GSkill modules, various OCZ modules. It's all down to price and what's available to you.

TheFlowerKing Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 I've read that it's better to buy low latency PC-3200 2-2-2-5-1 and run with a divider? What do you think about it? Well, I know my experience with dividers has not been so great on the NF4 platform. If you had a 3200+ with a 10x multi, you may be able to pull off 10x260 @ 2-2-2-5 @ 1:1, but with a 3000+ you'd definitely need to run a divider. It's an option for you to think about, personally I like tccd because it runs fast and relatively cool with low voltage (2.6-2.9v) required. With some Winbond based ram (2-2-2-5) you need to put more voltage through the modules (3.1-3.6v) and this requires active cooling and raises the system temps overall. IMO Winbond is great for benching whilst tccd/tcc5 is great for everyday use.
Guest Blooz1 Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 OK, here ya go - "hot off the presses!" AG has just done a study on the divider issue, some very good info here; Tight Timings + Dividers Vs. Loose Timings @ 1:1 Should be a "must read"!
