X800XL - Clear CMOS no boot

Found an interesting / irritating quirk,.... after clearing the cmos my system hangs with one red led. I have to pull my ATI X800XL (top slot), install an old PCI vid card, boot, set the date, and then I can re-install my X800XL.

Is this a known issue ? (I couldn't find anything with a search) or just ?????

Nope,... that does happen with my K8N Neo2 rig, but the DFI rig just will not boot after clearing the CMOS until I change the date. I mean all I am doing is the jumper and battery, not moving mem or other stuff.

I don't think it is the date change....but merely the fact you are saving the bios with a good working copy.

Perhaps try and reflash the bios?

Do you use the awdflash or Winflash? I recommend awdflash from dos and use the following command line:

awdflash {biosfilenamehere.bin} /py/sn/wb/cd/cc/cp

That will clear the boot block, DMI pool, and clear the CMOS...ensuring nothing left of old bios.

awdflash {biosfilenamehere.bin} /py/sn/wb/cd/cc/cp.

Just in case your not clearing the cmos the right way im going to add to Ryder's flashing instructions..

NEVER FLASHED OVERCLOCKED

1. Load Optimized Defaults in bios and make your floppy the first boot device..SAVEEXIT

2. Now your at the A: prompt.. Type the switches like Ryder posted.. When it says to removed the floppy and press f1 to reboot , do so..

3. As soon as it posts press DELETE to go into bios.. Now load Optimized Defaults and SAVEEXIT..

4. Right when it posts again unplug the psu to shut your rig off.. Once powered down press the power button a few times to discharge any power left in the system..

5. Now move the cmos jumper to clear and remove the cmos battery..

6. After about 5-10 min's move the jumper back to the normal position and put the battery back in..

7. Plug in your psu and press the power button..

8. IF it boots then go into bios and load Optimized Defaults and SAVEEXIT..

9. Go back into bios and set it up the way you want..

Hmmm,... still a no go. Will not boot unless I use an old pci card or my pcie in lower slot. After I get back to the bios and load optimized defaults, I can shut down put the pcie card in the top slot and its fine.
