MrToilet Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 I'm replacing the chipset fan on my NF3 Ultra board. I need to get the heatsink off, to replace it with the Vantec chipset cooler I bought. I removed the fan, but I'm having trouble taking off the heatsink. I've taken out the pins w/springs that hold the heatsink on, but I can't budge the heatsink. I'm afraid of breaking the mobo or something by wrenching on the heatsink. So how do I get the heatsink off? Is it attached with thermal paste or something? And also, when I put the new Vantec on, do I need to put Arctic Silver or something on the chipset to cool it? Thanks for your help.
Cyberparasite Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 it's got silicone paste as a tim, sometimes that stuff kinda dries. grip it firmly and twist, it should come right off.
Guest Lucky Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 Looked like an adhesive thermal pad to me. Not sure how to tackle it if indeed it is a pad. I guess levering the heatsinc from all corners/sides equally until she looses grip, also being careful to protect the lever spot on the m/b with cardboard or such. Hopefully an experienced removalist can advise.
MrToilet Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 Okay, I'll try it- so just clean the chip off w/ alcohol, apply Arctic Silver 5, put on Vantec cooler. It's OK to use Arctic Silver 5 directly on the chip, right?..
blinker0 Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 yes artic silver is very good to use as the NF3 chip itself will have a very uneven top.. But dont cover the whole chip . Just a little smaller than a dime size circle in the middle will do. And when you get it on. and the machine is running for the first time . when the chip gets warm Twist the H/S just a tad each direction It will spread the past evenly
