Serious problem 4 red leds FX55 dead

Recommended Posts

Hi

Yesterday my pc just turned off whilst on the internet, on trying to reboot I just get 4 red leds, I have done all the CMOS reset as per the DFI correct method I even left the battery out all night but it's still the same.

I then put a different CPU in and I get 3 full red leds and the 4th flashing eventually going down to the last red led but no boot at all.

I then take my FX55 and put it in the PC where the 3000 chip came out of and it doesn't work won't detect cpu, so I take the 3000 chip back out of the DFI board and replace it into the board where I just tested the FX55 and it works fine, I put the FX 55 back into the DFI board and I get 4 red leds no beeps no flashing nothing.

I'm beginning to think my motherboard has died and killed my FX55 for sure the FX55 is dead in doesn't work in a good working pc.

Any idea's please?

I'd say your CPU is dead. 4 red LED's means it can not detect your processor.

System startup 4 led’s on

CPU is detected 3 led’s on

DRAM is detected 2 led’s on

VGA is detected 1 led on

At this point if it can boot it should. Did you check your BIOS to make sure your HD is set as a boot device? Did you check to see if it is accessible in your other computer?

After loads of swapping and testing I find my FX55 is now dead, the motherboard seems to work with another 3000 winchester after another of the DFI CMOS resets.

What's bothering is what could have caused it I was running at 1.42v with a very mild overclock. the temps were maximum of 42 c under load and 32-34 idle.

I'm really worried that it might be the motherboard but how can I prove it? I don't fancy putting another £600 chip in it to find out.

damn it. Im really sorry to hear that. I have on order an SLI-DR to go with my FX57, and if this board kills a $1020.00 chip, I will kill someone! Anyways, good luck

The thing that always worries me is why, if I were putting more voltage through it or it were running hot I would feel better because I would have an idea why it happened, I was just brousing the internet and it just bombed out then rebooted with the 4 dreaded red led's.

At the moment I really don't know how to find out why it happened if I could do that then I would feel happier trying another FX or X2 but to be honest I can't afford another to just die for no apparent reason.

I have killed a CPU in the past which I can say was my fault I put 1.375 + 123% and it tried to boot and gave the red leds of death, I can live with that because I know why it happened but for a cpu to die when doing next to nothing really upsets me.

If anyone has any idea's as to what might have caused it I would be grateful.

How long did you have the chip? If it was les then a month it is possible that it was just a problem with the chip that took a while to manafest. ALso shouldnt it still be under warranty from amd? If it is they will most likely replace it (unless it has burn marks or cracks, which I would guess it doenst since you didnt mention them).

Hi I am thinking that it might be worth trying a RMA it was just over a month old, I'm a bit lucky because I have 2 of them the other one I removed the IHS so I hope that doesn't give up because there's no way AMD will look at that one.

i have looked at it carefully and it looks perfect so I think I might try and see if AMD will look at it.

Thanks.

no no no. the warrenty is void! you overclocked it, thats the risk you took.. sorry to say. it would be unethical to RMA it after overclocking it (however mild it was) it was suppose to run at 1.4v, not 1.425 or 1.5 or whatever.. meh

I will tell AMD what I've been doing with it then they can decide if they can or can't or even won't do anything, I certainly do feel that what you say is right if I wreck it I should pay as I did overclcok it the voltage was left at stock but shown in the BIOS as 1.42.

Seems wierd as I have another FX55 which the IHS is cut off, I run it overclocked to 2.85GHz with the volts @1.45v and I get no problems, yet my work machine which I need to be reliable goes tits up almost without reason.

I would imagine AMD will be able to test the CPU and be able to tell what has been done to it, surely some of the circuits will give them an idea as to why it no longer works.

I do totally agree though that if I buggered it by raising the MHz then I should bear the loss otherwise it's like everyone else pays a little extra to cover those warranty claims.

THe voltage at 1.42 is just the motherboard having a small overvolt, it is not due to your action and as such is not likely to void the warranty. As for overclocking, the only way they can tell, and the only time they are likely to complain is if there are burn marks. Also while it is likely that they could figure out why the processor died it would be far more expensive to do that then to just ship anotherone, so they probably will just make sure they got something in the box then throw it away, the time/money involved in testing it to determine what caused the error is simply not worth it.

wow.. gj on doing the right thing. now that you say it that way, if you tell amd what happend they might be nice and RMA for you. i might of come off a little strong before. sorry about that. i just see people doing RMAs for STUPID reasons when it is their fault or they "dont like it" and it just pisses me off. thats not why we have an RMA process. You have earned my respect by taking it like a man.. and most importantly doing the right thing..cheers! :)
