RAID size

Recommended Posts

What would you recommend the size I should stripe my 80GB HD's?

Is there some math that I should calculate? Or anyone w/ previous experience that would know exactly how big I should stripe it?

I'm new to this whole RAID thing, so if anyone has suggestions I am open to it.

In general, keep stripe size a multiple of 4 higher than your cluster....i.e. 16/4, 32/8, etc. This is only when using 2 drives however.

I may be wrong, but I think this is recommended for any number of drives. Some have used a different ratio rather than 4:1 with good results, but this is a good start point. Only way to really know is test yourself, like anything else. One thing for sure, that has been proven regardless of type drives, file system, number of drives, size of files, etc., is that you don't want the cluster size larger than the stripe. I've seen these results, and you don't want them! For most applications a 16k stripe with default 4k cluster (with NTFS), is good, or if you use lots of larger files, then 32/8 or 64/16.
