davidhammock200 Posted September 4, 2005 Posted September 4, 2005 Updated October 19, 2006 For many reasons a PSU with a single, very powerful +12V rail is often desired. The new DX10 GPU's would be my main reason! These reasons can include multi-CPU's, a large number of HDD's, a TEC, etc. Under the ATX12V 2.xx specs for dual/multi +12V rail PSU's, the +12V rails are usually limited to 18A, this is often not enough. Therefore I recommend the following single rail PSU's. fordf250 Posted September 4, 2005 Posted September 4, 2005  How do you know 14-18A is not enough? Is there a spec some place I might see?I am running a dual 12V rail with only 485W and clock dual prime stable at 4.32G at 1.65V on air cooling with4 hdds 3-120mm fans 2 runing 113cfm and 3 90mm fans and 2 optical drives.Thanx. Edit:I just looked at the specs for the enermax 600w and it still only has 18a on each 12V railsame as the 485.
davidhammock200 Posted September 5, 2005 Posted September 5, 2005 I'm an AMD A64 fan boy, however if you google, go to Anandtech & look around, you will see that some OC'ed P4's can pull over 200W's.
fordf250 Posted September 5, 2005 Posted September 5, 2005 200W!!! Thanks. But I think Voltage x Amperage = Watts, so 12Vx18A=216w and I am impressed by my 10 heatpipe xp-120 but I dont think its pulling 200W+ from my cpu for me to be stable at 4.3G. davidhammock200 Posted September 5, 2005 Posted September 5, 2005 Go over to XS & you will see some who are, especially with the new dual cores!

davidhammock200 Posted September 23, 2005 Posted September 23, 2005 Nice to see Intel gettin some respect around here LOL :nod:Right now AMD PWNS gaming, but given Intel's history & resources this won't last forever, besides when it comes to business PC's Intel still PWNS the market!
Guest ballista Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 I don't know about needing a high amp +12v rail to overclock P4s. I have a 480 antec neopower with 18a and 15a dual 12v rails and I have my LGA775 prescott o/c to 3.8 with 1.45v and it's stable as can be. I mean 6+ hour BF2 gaming sessions stable. And lets face it BF2 is very hard on CPUs and systems in general.
red930 Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 It is true in your case that you do not need a high-amp +12v rail PSU. Yet for those running Intel dual-core CPUs it is a different matter. snipper_cr Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 Now this is really interesting because i was really close to getting new Powersupply, namely the Enermax with 4 12V rails at about 18 amps each i think. My current Aspire 500 watt has 34 amps on the 12V rail. However, many times when i overclock i need more volts and my PSU just cant seem to deliver it (i get hard system locks even though CPU temp is low/water cooled). So is it best that i stick with this current power supply? I have a 3.4E (prescot) which i know draws a torrent of current. And lets face it BF2 is very hard on CPUs and systems in general. no crud! BF2 is a work out even for alot of the high end computers. I got an X850XTPE and i put full details/resolutions with full AA/AF just to see how it would respond. Water cool it sure enough pulled through although it got stuttery at some points (but it could have been lag... should have tried on single player).
