Boot problem blank screen

Recommended Posts

I have just put together my system and when I boot the monitor is blank. I have taken out my RAM, video card and monitor, put them into another system just to make sure that work right. All the debug lights are lit. I have swapped the ram from dimm1 slot to 2 and so on... I am completely stumped. The only thing I can think of is that I have a compatiblity issue.

I emailed DFI tech support and they told me I might have a defective bios, so I ordered another board and am still having the same problem.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Is your processor a Venice core? If so, you have to flash the BIOS. The factory BIOS only recognizes older processors. BIOS download link here

Make sure you download the "exe" file version and not the "zip". Insert a blank floppy in the drive and then run the exe file from the desktop. It will create a flash BIOS program for you and copy command.com to the diskette so that it's bootable. Leave the floppy in the drive and reboot. The flash program is entirely automatic and requires no user intervention on your part. ;)

Ok just to make sure Im on the same page, I swaped the clear cmos jumper to 2-3 instead of 1-2. Power on the system for a few seconds then off. Swap the jumper back to default 1-2. power on the system with the diskette in drive a:

See when I boot the only think that happens is the video card's fan and cpus fan and all the hard drives and cdroms turn on. the screen displays nothing. The light for the adrive does not come on. the computer I am on the internet is a different computer than the one that does not work.

I tried putting a stick of ram in dimm2 and clearing to cmos, however with the same results.

am i flashing the bios wrong?

can I put the bois flasher onto a cd and try that since the cdrom spins a cd if i put it in..?

is there a jumber setting to flash the bios after i put the disk in?

oh yea and i do have a venice core

I dont know if you saw my reply to your suggestion, I am new to using forums. I was thinking about buying an older processor so the bois would recognize it and then flash the bios. Then I could put my 3000+ back in. What do you think?

What are the diag led's showing? How many are staying on?

Here is how your read the diag led's

4 LEDs on = Power applied

3 LEDs on = CPU has been detected OK

2 LEDs on = RAM has been detected OK

1 LED on = VGA has been detected OK

0 LEDs on = System has booted to the Operating System.

As long as you are in the BIOS including running memtest from the BIOS option, there will be one LED on.

all four leds are on, so that means no cpu detected. which means I need to flash bios?, however i cannot get into the bios...

think i should just get a different mobo? I would rather not spend the extra 50 bucks to get the next step up.

I followed the step by step guide to clear the cmos, I did a full 10 hour clear. I am going to try again tonight because I forgot to remove the RAM from the board during the clear. I hear no beep from the speaker and still saw nothing on the screen.

thanks for those helpful links. I noticed ed is running a winchester 3000+ vs. my venice core.

so after I have cleared my cmos and still have the same result is there anything I can try besides getting a different brand mobo? like abit for asus...

So if my adrive light is not turning on then I must be doing something wrong? such as not clearing the cmos correctly?

Worm you said that the bios only recognizes the older processors such as the newcastle and winchester. However it does not recognize the venice. Have you spoken with someone who was able to get the venice to work with my board?

I am new to all of this and I am wanting to overclock. from my research the venice is supposed to get the best overclocking results vs. the newcastle and winchester. However if I cannot flash my bios it seems that I should just get a newcastle or winchester instead of getting a different brand mobo. I really like the features on the DFI.

well if anyone can think of anything else for me to try I would appreciate it.

thanks,

michael

I have not much in the way of help but only some experience for you:

I had same board and a 3000+ venice... I fried the bios with some funky HyperX mems. All 4 leds would light up and got the exact same symptoms as you. Clearing cmos did nothing no matter how long I left it.

I RMA'd the board and after that everything was perfect.

Interesting, before you fried the bios you COULD get it to boot and into the bios? Or did you have to flash the bios at first?

I have already RMA'd 2 of these boards due to the same results. I am thinking of going for a different brand instead getting a 3rd dfi board.
