I saw Trans's post about machines and a list of everyones specs on those machines....but what is the point of so many machines wihtout a network! :OYea you got 5 machines but how many machines can you actually support from the house if you hosted your own private LAN party?! :blink:Can you host 5? 10? or even 20?! Prize awarded for those with the largest private LAN? (a pat on the back!) :lol:So what do you say? Tell me whatcha' got!!

Well i do private lan's with friends, seeing as i am one of the only ones who can drive the odds of everyone getting to a big one aren't very good. I think the biggest one we've had was 10 people, but there was room for more but we just dont know any other people who are into lanning. We usually dont have that many because the odds of everyone being there aren't that good, but 10 people in cs, c&c generals, bf/ , mohaa or whatever else is a nice size.

Jeez, when someone else makes a post about networking then everyone answers right away, but when i ask about networking, the topics site there without any replies

Well anyway, my lan is much smaller, with an 8 Port D-Link Hub, 8 Port D-Link Switch, and Wireless D-Link Router with 4 built in ports

;) Nice setup Local! I have got a wall mount rack with a 3com Superstacker II 24 port switch, 4 4 port Linksys routers (1 is wireless) an 8 port Linksys switch and a 3com 4 port hub also a 14 port hub (off brand). They tie into a 48 port patch panel. If you are going to do something right....make sure you over do it! :rolleyes:All connected together gives me... 24+8+3+3+3+13=55 user capable LAN. The most connected users...8!! But...it is a useful way to keep up to date practicing router and switch configuring, especially when a couple of us get together and configure some Cisco Routers! Gonna get that CCIE one day!

Okay, just fyi, I do setup lans for small business's on the side.

Start with the Router (I saved this guy from being thrown out a few years ago): 48 port 3 com 10/100 super stack with floppy and PCMCI hdd. Patch pannels: 12 ports each x 8. currently only 4 are populated.

48 ports punched down all over the house (even in the bathroom... don't ask I just had to do it). Currently only 10 of the ports are in use, but I have had 39 used at one time (had to rewire the house's electrical along with the 12,000ft of cat 5e I ran). Modtap wall plates used, 1 for every 5 square feet of space in the basement placed on the drop ceiling (works out best for lan parties). 4 supporting servers up all the time, with 3 more stand bys ready to go at any time.

also have a pair of 48 port 3 com 10/100 switches sitting down there if I REALLY wanted to get nuts. I also have the 19" rack mount cabinet downstairs, wiring to the garage, and I'm waiting to see if when and if I'm going to be moving from comunistcast cable over to a dedicated T1 line.

All I can say is wow :O Puts most of our home networks to shame.

Here is my little setup.

Terayon Cable modem

DLink DES-16+ 16 port switch 4 ports populated

Smoothwall Firewall/Router running on a dedicated machine

Linksys 5 port switch in my LAN kit ( just in case we run out of ports this one is for backup)

Thats about it.

Linksys WRT54G 802.11G Router with 4 port switch

5 eight port switches

You would be supraised how good wireless works for Lan parties. I usually have 10-15 people on wireless when i host a lan party and there pings are only 2-5m/s higher than the people on ethernet.

Well, I can have virtually unlimited... I have a netgear powerline network, all people have to do is bring a netgear power adapter and they get instant internet from any poweroutlet and LAN abilities.

power line networking sucks. It still needs a lot of work until it will be as good as ethernet or wireless.
