placenta Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 trading up from twin BFG 6800 SLI to a single 7800GTX most of what i've read says the single 7800GTX will be faster. I'd get the BFG 7800GTX OC, cause i never ever had a problem with BFG cards. I almost have my twin cards sold locally for $450. The new card will cost me $599 + tax. One reason is the heat, my twins run very hot, and ive had SLI freeze twice in game in last week. good idea, bad idea?
marcopolo Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 I have a feeling that the 2 6800 have far more muscle.......however (not totally sure) - the Nvidia drivers have not really been optimised greatly for SLI yet, and some games do not support SLI. SO you may get better all round performance with the 7800. My penny's worth. Unless you like to stare at the screen when 3D Mark 2005 is running. rldolph79 Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 Well, compared to 2 6800s you should notice a pretty large drop in temp, so I'd say good idea.
placenta Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 For more details, here are my two current cards: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814143030 also, some people say i will be CPU limited if i get the 7800GTx.. like it wont perform fully until i get a faster CPU. i dont overclock, just the way i work. I'd buy a faster cpu if i had to.
Guest Tyler Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 You are giving away your cards for $450 for both of them. You could get $300 for each if you would sell on forums. Why would the new card cost you $600+tax? Cant you buy online? I see them for about $480, and no tax from online stores. 2x6800U's are faster most of the time. But they are hotter, take up more juice, louder, etc. Summer is almost over if you can wait it out.
SaFrOuT Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 i prefer getting the 7800GTX for less power needed, less heat and the option to add another one in the future for SLi
placenta Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 Dude, I couldnt get $300 each for these cards.. Newegg sells them for $260 each brand new. newegg has the card i want for $525, but local its $599. And with newegg shipping, it comes to about $540 anyway. I pay tax either way, im in CA. Angry_Games Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 i just received an XFX 7800GTX and XFX 7800GT...since SLI is still what I consider bogus marketing (it does work well on games that are really optimized for it, but the majority of games either don't work with it, dont work well with it, or run slower or have graphical problems with it) and a lot of benches show a single 7800GTX running games faster and better...I would go for a single 7800GTX myself. Tony420 Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 Single 7800GTX gives 6800U SLI a run for its money, I speak from experience. Half the games out dont support SLI properly and make games run worse or have glitchs (as AG stated). When you turn up AA/AF and high resolution the single 7800GTX tops 6800SLI. Not to mention the 6800's don't have Tranparency AA(I cant live without SuperSampling anymore) and gamma correct AA...

I don't know if waiting till tuesday is out of the question, but you'll have it by then at the latest if you order now.
