ixtapalapaquetl Posted August 20, 2005 Posted August 20, 2005 I was thinking that it would be nice if I could run my fan at 10V. If I ran the fan's ground to the -5V line and the other on a 5V line, would this do it? Would it be more dangerous than running it at 7V (12V, ground to 5V)? Thanks for the input. ixtapalapaquetl Posted August 20, 2005 Posted August 20, 2005 :shake:Wow, a :shake: ! Glad I asked before trying! I got the 5V, 7V mods; using 7V now and loving it (made a little molex adaptor - my first power mod!). I was just hoping for a mod to get like 9V or 10V. The noise of a 12V Tornado is unbearable, but 7V is "too" quiet, so I'd like to give it a bit more juice.
arthurleung Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 A resistor is a cheap way of doing this
ixtapalapaquetl Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 Thanks for the suggestion. I could easily go to Radio Shack and pick one up. What specific resistor would I need? Would I connect it to the 12V wire? And would it generate excessive/dangerous amounts of heat?
Sea Shadow Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 Just make sure it can carry the wattage. Or calculate the value and rig up a bunch in parallel
ixtapalapaquetl Posted September 2, 2005 Posted September 2, 2005 I went with a 3 ohm, 25 watt resistor. It gets a little warm, but not hot. Voltage dropped to 9.55, and fan is quiet enough. Thanks for the help!
