Guest phat Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Okay, I just got my psu in (thanks Dread-Star, playah and Thewacokid), and I will be installing the new rig this weekend. I have been keeping tabs on this forum and its starting to freak me out. :eek2: I am not much of an overclocker (tho I may dabble since this board is so oc friendly), I basically just want a nice stable rig for gaming and whatnot. I was able to get this mobo as a chipset combo for a nice price, but following this forum has me thinking I'm in over my head. Basically what I am able to discern is that the shipped bios is not going to cut it. I need to flash to the 623. And after that there may be some fiddling to get 2 gigs of ram to run in a 4x512 setting. I am still basically a newb at building machines. This is like my 4th personal, and I have built a few for friends. I have never flashed a bios (fyi, I am ducking right now ). I have read the nF4 BIOS List many times, and was curious....do y'all think that I'd be better off flashing from the cdrom type? (because it has instructions to follow). Also, I keep reading about a clear cmos before and after flash. Do I take that to mean; open new motherboard and take battery out and clear cmos before even approaching my case? I am fairly confident I'll be up and running, but would really like some last minute advice from teh l337ers here. You can talk down to me....I'm grown...I can take it. :shake: Thanks. phat

I think some of your questions will be answered there.
dmo580 Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Tips that I learned from my build: Start with 1 stick of RAM on OJ slot (#2). Plug ALL 4 connectors in for power. If it doesn't boot, don't panic. Flip your PSU off, reset CMOS, etc. Try again. If you get a successful boot, try to up the voltages a bit for safety reasons and then FLASH BIOS ASAP! Once you get that you can try playing around with lower voltages to see if you can get back down to stock. Otherwise... Good luck! If you want to try OCing, have PATIENCE. I finished RAM testing last night even though I've had my system running since Monday. I just started CPU testing and I won't be benching 3D Mark till this weekend (on my friggn Voodoo 3). My 7800GT hopefully gets here next week so I can finish up all benchmarking and game by the end of next week. Be sure to burn in. You will be happy that you did. Qpower Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 omg.,.. there's another person that has a Voodoo 3!!!!! My old rig was an Athlon 500 with a Voodoo3 2000 which I later upgrade to a 3000. I still have both of those cards... they rocked but they could only handle 16 bits of color other than that they are the roxxor. Guest phat Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 Thanks alot cpuz, lots of great info there from that link in your sig. Going to print a bunch off. As for dmo580, thanks man, I plan on following that same first procedure, but the part about up the voltage for safety reasons confuses me. Safety of the board? components? What exactly do you mean? Thanks, phat
