This will be an ongoing project. I just started diving into Haswell overclocking with the i5-4670K (and also Devil's Canyon i5-4690K), and I'm not liking it as much as Ivy Bridge's i5-3570K. Heat is a huge factor for holding back overclocking stability, and it seems that Intel isn't going to change back to soldering the IHS to the die anytime soon. So, from delidding Ivy Bridge CPU's alone, heat isn't a limiting factor. You can see from my "This is why I like delidding Ivy Bridge CPU's" thread. Haswell and Devil's Canyon, on the other hand, get pretty hot. An overclock to 4.4GHz at 1.25V's is pretty much average, and you can expect temperatures over 90C during 100% CPU load stability tests with a good $70+ cooling solution (will edit after testing). What happens if we delid it, and then also lap the CPU? How much of a difference will each of those modifications make? Test Equipment and Setup: i5-4670K with 4x4GB memory (more details later) ASUS Z97m-Plus Motherboard (more details later) Overclock to 4.4GHz at 1.25V's with 1:1 Cache ratio (more details later) Hammer and vice method for delidding Hand sanding from 400 grit to 2,500 grit for CPU lapping Bosch ROS20VS (orbital sander) from 800 grit to 12,000 grit for CPU lapping Hopkins 09515 Pocket Surface Level Corsair H80 in push/pull (fan details later) Apogee HD CPU Waterblock and radiator in push/pull (radiator and fan details later) Noctua NT-H1 for the die and IHS, and also for the CPU and CPU cooler (might change) Testing Method: 2 hours of Prime95 Blend Tests (might change - I wouldn't want to burn out my CPU) Real Temp 3.7 for temperature monitoring Test 1: Default i5-4670K CPU (not delidded or lapped) on Corsair H80 Default i5-4670K CPU (not delidded or lapped) on Custom Watercooling Test 2: Delidded i5-4670K on Corsair H80 Delidded i5-4670K on Custom Watercooling Test 3: Delidded and hand lapped to 2500 grit i5-4670K on Corsair H80 Delidded and hand lapped to 2500 grit i5-4670K on Custom Watercooling Test 4: Delidded and machine lapped to 12,000 grit i5-4670K on Corsair H80 Delidded and machine lapped to 12,000 grit i5-4670K on Custom Watercooling Test 5: Delidded and machine lapped to 12,000 grit i5-4670K on Corsair H80 with higher overclocking and voltages Delidded and machine lapped to 12,000 grit i5-4670K on Custom Watercooling with higher overclocking and voltages Conclusion and Results: TBD
Hey guys, I am following the tutorial to overclock my 4770k found here http://www.overclockersclub.com/guides/overclock_intel_4770k_guide/ and ran into a problem. It says while using primer that I shouldn't be going over 80c at stock speeds, but using HWMoniter during the primer95 test my CPU was going well over that. It quickly went to 90c, and I stopped the test at 91c (after about a minute of testing) just in case this was a problem. Is this usual? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
