Quintupled my internet speeds For $100

Rated at 150, but guaranteed 100. I regularly see 180 on my speedtests.
  4. I know this is usually a place for help, so if this is in violation please remove. However! I recently was going through my parents internet stuff, and realized that for $1 more per month, we could get triple the potential speed, as long as we provided our own modem. So I did that, and the increase was pretty good (went from an avg of 30 to an avg of 70 ish.) Then, our router died, so we replaced it with an AC1200 router. Well, after installing it, I'm getting upwards of 165! So, for $100 in equipment, and $1/month, we basically increased our speed 5 fold. Just thought I'd share my small victory

    Updating Hardware With Windows 10

From what I've read, I was under the assumption you could contact Microsoft, and they could help you activate on new hardware. Isn't there also a way to get your win10 CD Key now?
  8. If it's a SATA drive, you should just need a SATA power cable, or SATA power extension cable.
  9. So I just asked for help with adapter suggestions, but after buying a PCI adapter, I realized that my PC is in a terrible spot to receive wifi with a built in card. My wireless was working so well because I have it on a USB extension up high, free from obstructions. I used to have a powerline adapter, and loved that, as I would get great speeds and ping, but it died. SO my question is, what is going to be my best option for improving my speed and stability? I'd love to figure out a way to go wired if I could. (Just for reference) USB Adapter: 30-40 down, 2 up. Steam Downloads at 4 megs/s PCI adapter: 10 down, 8 up. Steam Downloads 1 meg/s Powerline: 60 down, 6 up. EDIT: I just fixed my powerline, but the speed is only getting 18 down.... Frustrating.

    Ideas to improve my connection?

I got my powerline working, but the signal doesn't translate well through the walls, so I got a usb 3 adapter, and bought a 9 foot cord for it, so I'm getting 65 down
  11. I currently have an ASUS adapter that only has a 300Mbps limit, and I'm getting about half the speed through it that I get on my brand new lappy (30 vs 60 down.) I keep getting connection issues while gaming and streaming, so I'm looking for a new adapter. USB preferred, but I'll go PCI if it makes sense. I saw this on amazon, and it seems pretty good, but I don't know that I trust the brand. Any suggestions are welcome, and appreciated!

    Motherboard memory issue?

It's a basically useless task, so just end it. You can also uninstall it, might as well. This might be of some interest http://www.file.net/process/alarmclock.exe.html

    Ideas to improve my connection?

Moving the pc, or the router isn't really an option, unfortunately. As I added in my original post, I got the powerline working, but the speeds are only around 18. I'm frustrated haha. I wish I could just plug in directly. I suppose I could buy a really long cable, and run it through the attic. I also suppose that the cables I'm using are older, and don't have the speed. My cables are CAT5e, so that's not the issue. My connection is only 100Mbps through the powerline, though.... I also suppose I could get an extender for my antennae...

  16. I'm getting quite a lot back from grants this school year, so I want to get me a laptop. I won't be doing anything too heavy on it, maybe some light audio recording. I would like an ultrabook for the weight, as I'd be hauling it around at school. However, they are pricey. I don't want to spend more than $1k. I'm leaning toward an XPS13, or a Blade Stealth, but I'm definitely open to suggestions. Any advice is welcomed!

    Looking for a notebook

Thanks for the advice guys, I ended up getting the Dell inspiron 7000 13" 2-1. I decided an ultrabook was more than I needed.

    Looking for a notebook

Nothing too particular. I would like a usbc, 8 gigs ram. I don't really care about touchscreen or QHD. I do want to go play with some options at a store to get a feel for things. I just think so far for price-performance that the 13 and the stealth are pretty close in comparison. The new Yoga looks sick, but it's a little rich for my blood.
  19. I'm not sure, but I would do it. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

    5930k Temps.

That seems about normal for that OC. I live in hell, so my idle is around 40, load is about 80 with a 4.2 oc, and a room temp around 80 farenheit.

    Annual OCC Contest Thread

Wow. Never "expect" a win from any sort of contest. Doing that makes anything you end up getting less awesome and you get upset for no reason. As far as I know, the winners information gets sent to the manufacturers, and they ship out the stuff. It takes 4-6 weeks, if I remember correctly.

    The Beast Begins!

Welp, the parts are here, and there's no time like the present, so let's get into this build!!! It's been a few years....or 8 since I built my current PC, so I hope I remember how this goes. After getting the mobo in....and then taking it out to put the I/O shield in, I successfully read the instructions, and gingerly as hell placed this beautiful processor (that costs more than my first build....) into it's socket. You can't see it in that pic, but I also mounted the PSU... in the most difficult way possible. Ah, the joys of nothing coming with the manual.... Now to put on this MASSIVE cooler. Guys.... this thing weighs 3 pounds, has 8 heatpipes, and barely clears my RAM. I've seen children with smaller heads than this thing. After some adjusting to get it oriented correctly, it fits. It even clears the GPU! Gotta love that 970! Time to wire it up! This case has tons of features to aid in cable routing, which facilitated a pretty cable mess free case, in my opinion. It also had 2 different options for mounting the SSD's that I got with it, and I opted to put them behind the mobo tray, to keep the inside of the case cleaner. After wiring it all up, it was time to see if she would boot! SHE'S ALIVE!!!!!!!!! And she looks pretty damn good to me! I tried to set the SSDs to run in RAID 0, but something must be wrong with the RAID controller in this board, because windows refused to install to it. 4 HOURS LATER, and at least 15 different solutions attempted, I gave up and decided to run them individually. Windows wouldn't even let me install with the controller in RAID mode, so I switched to AHCI and finally got windows setup running. Ten minutes later, it was installed! Seriously, it went stupid fast with these SSD's. After getting most opf my programs up and running, it was time to see how the temps were doing. I was running 10 tabs, and and switching between 6 other programs. Not too shabby. And this cooler is whisper quiet, it's excellent, especially when it comes time for my recording work. Anyway, she be done! I've gone from having an i5-750 and a gtx 460 to having this beast, and it's NICE! Gotta love pure dumb luck!
