  1. Update: It's all built, OS installed, and runs great. Only thing I can complain about so far is that I got a Samsung SH-B083L Blu-ray and it's really whiney when it spins up. It made all my software installs annoying. The power and hdd lights on the tower are super bright, overpowering the red led fan, but a lot of people have mentioned that. The 5850 is a great step up from the 8800 I've been playing with. One thing to mention is the mobo comes with a CD with XP/Vista drivers on it that won't auto run when you insert it. I downloaded the drivers right off ASRock's site. The boards diagnostic LED is glowing "AA" as well, but a quick search on google showed that to be a common thing and not something to worry about. Just wish there was a way to make it go away.
  2. Rather than get everything from newegg, I decided to take a drive to a microcenter and picked up an i7 920 for a few dollars more than a 965 on the egg. I also picked up the HAF 932 and the PSU. I figured it was as good a deal as I'd get. Even knowing the dimensions ahead of time, that case is still huge in person!
  3. Hi everyone! I'm building my first gaming rig and that's how I ended up here. I've got a thread in system builds and will start a worklog once everything gets delivered!
  4. mine is pretty self explanatory... i drink a lot of coffee!
  5. Ok so I'm changing mobos, going to go with the ASRock X58 Extreme LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX instead. It has a floppy connector, as well as IDE connections which will allow me to stick some of my older drives in there without a SATA adapter. i7 930 is already on newegg... decisions decisions!
  6. Did you buy it before or after January 31? That's the supposed deadline for purchases. Maybe they'll still honor it even though it's about a month past. http://event.asus.com/2009/Windows7/
  7. I was considering that ASUS for a while. Only thing about that one is that its Vista and isn't eligible for an upgrade if that matters to you.
  8. I don't really buy movies, but that's a good idea. I get an AMD Phenom II X4 processor and AM3 mobo I can save around a hundred bucks to put towards a 5870 and keep my budget the same. I really like the idea of triple channel and 8-way hyperthreading and like nVidia, I've only ever had intel processors. Will the improvement in my graphics be enough to offset what I'm giving up with the processor? Anything else I'd be gaining or lossing by going this route? Is there a significant performance boost from the 5850 to the 5870?
  9. And if its out of stock at BB, you can get it from Staples too http://www.staples.com/Compaq-Presario-CQ5...DP4119:CL161746
  10. That's a nice way around it, thanks. Never heard of that TIM, but it did well in an 80-way shootout of pastes.
  11. Just looking for a little input on a gaming PC build I'm considering. This is what I've chosen so far. LG DVD Burner Black SATA Model GH24NS50 COOLER MASTER HAF 932 RC-932-KKN1-GP Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5 XFX HD-585A-ZNBC Radeon HD 5850 (Cypress Pro) 1GB Black Edition CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) ECS X58B-A2 LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard Intel Core i7-920 Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound I originally wanted to go the GTX 285 route, but I was reading reviews and it seems that the 5850 is comparable and costs a bit less. DX11 is a plus also, but I'm not sure about giving up PhysX. I've always had nVidia graphics so ATI would definitely be a change. The ECS mobo wasn't my first choice either, but after reading a few reviews on it, it seems its great for OC. As far as the case goes, I'm not trying to bandwagon with the HAF 932 but I love its industrial aesthetic. My concern is that it may be a dust magnet. i7 920 is a proven processor, but the 930 is coming out any day now and is 2.88 GHz to start. Should I add anything? Only thing I haven't decided on so is a CPU cooler if even necessary, suggestions? I want reliability so I won't be doing any extreme overclocking. Feel free to nitpick!
