    How to OC 6950 xfire?

Thanks, I will try that in the near future, I've decided to first find my highest OC without any voltage tweaking, but after that I will try to increase these voltages to see if I can get a higher OC Seems like the max stable core OC is 904MHz (905 survived for 45mins in trackmania, but I'm gonna play trackmania for 1 hour with 904 now, to see how it goes) But what I really wanted to ask is, isn't there some general formula regarding the "safe-downclocking", instead of saying: "when you reach max stable OC kick things back a little", it would be nice to know either a % of decrease or a fixed value, like 5 or 10 I.e. if I find my max stable OC to be 904, I either decrease it by.. say 1% ----> downlock to 894MHz, or if it's a fixed value, like 5 or 10, then I downlock to either 899MHz or 894MHz... or if 4 is fine, then it's 900 My point is, as a computer scientist / mathematician, I hate ambiguity, and I prefer formulas So that I don't have to keep asking: If it's 904, how much should I downclock? or now it was 903 apparently, how much should I downclock, etc. etc. Cheers I really think it's 904 though, but let's see, cya in an hour =) EDIT: gaaaaah 904 didn't work either.. going for 903 now, cya in an hour (figured I might as well test with 1 hour of trackmania first, since this is where I have the crashes.. instead of wasting 1hr and 10 mins testing with kombustor, heaven and unigine only to see a crash in trackmania) EDIT2: :O :O 903 didn't crash for 1 hour in trackmania But now it's soon 0.30am, and i got school at 8.. so I'm gonna go sleep now, but when I get back from school I'm gonna put it through Cinebench OpenGL test, 30 mins in heaven, 30 mins in kombustor and 10 mins in 3dmark 11 test 4 (looped), and play crysis 2 for 1 hour, and browse youtube for 1 hour (I think I had a 0x116 whilst watching some youtube video in fullscreen at 907 on the core or so.. so that's gonna be a test too), and if I've sparetime I'll play Worms Reloaded for 1 hour (practice for S7LAN and some test.. although it's a 2D game and I doubt it will act as a test) So I am 95% sure 903 is the final clock for the core, now I can ask: to which frequency should I downclock it, to satisfy safe-mode downclock? =) Cheers! woohoo so happy I finally (most likely) found a max core clock!

    How to OC 6950 xfire?

ok thx boinker Does anyone know what the NB voltage is on my mobo, and what I should set it to to achieve stable overclocks on my gpu?

    How to OC 6950 xfire?

Which of these are NB and IOH voltages? I figured it wasn't vCore, nor DRAM voltage... VCCSA Voltage: 0.9375 VCCIO Voltage: 1.1375 CPU PLL Voltage: 1.55 PCH Voltage: 1.05000 And what should I set them to? EDIT: gaah 907 gave an 0x116 in Kombustor >_<, gonna try with 906 until I find out what NB and IOH voltages are... wow this is so weird.. it felt rock-stable at 909 :/ Also, I actually had a 0x116 before I started OCing... but only in BF3, and I thought it was just cuz it was so fkn bugged... I never got it to work.. but on the other hand... *cough* didn't pay for it *cough* I had to launch the game 3 times to get into the menu.. 1st time screen would go black before intro thing... 2nd time it would freeze at the EA logo, and 3rd time it would go all the way into menus, and when I started to fiddle with ultra settings I would get a 0x116 Same procedure after each restart... 3 launches.. That is fkn weird..... EDIT2: ok so 906 doesn't work now... I think I'll try with stock clocks and smack it through all these tests to see if it's the overclock or I need to raise some voltages... EDIT3: stock overclocks definately stable... so I guess I need to increase the NB or IOH voltage, which I don't know, to get it stable at 909 on the core...

    How to OC 6950 xfire?

gaaaaah had a 0x116 bsod while playing trackmania... going down to 908 core now, and gonna go through it all again (cinebench OGL test, 30 mins heaven, 30 mins kombustor, 10 mins 3dmark 11 test 4, 1 hour Trackmania and 1 hour Crysis 2) If it doesn't cry about this, then we're going 900MHz on the core and on to the memory OC EDIT: wow lol, seems like we're going 907 on the core.. just had anoter 0x116, but in heaven (odd, it held fine for 30 mins at 909, but at 908 it didn't last 20 mins, oh well this just shows how hard it is to stability test graphics cards xD) EDIT2: so 907 managed OGL and 30 mins of heaven, but now it's 0:23am and I got school at 8 tomorrow, so I'll hit the bed now, and put it through 3Dmark 11, kombustor and some games when I get home... In case 907 is the golden number, is 900MHz still OK for a "safe-mode downclock", or whatever you would call it, or do I need to go lower, since it apparently wasn't fully stable at 909 nor 908? Cheers <3 OCC

ok so, something like 905MHz, or would you go 900MHz? (round numbers are cool right? )

    How to OC 6950 xfire?

Do I really need to put it back to 899MHz after all these tests? Isn't it rock solid at 909MHz if it can do all this without showing any sign of instability?

Oops, I meant Trackmania Nations Forwever =P I gotta practice a bit, cuz there's a tournament for it at S7LAN, and I came 4th last year, so maybe if I practice this time I might have a chance to win But if you also play that, I'll hit u a PM EDIT: I think I'll play an hour of Worms Reloaded as well... just to be 100% sure it's über stable, and because there is a tourney in Worms Reloaded too xD

A little update on the overclocking =) Seems that 909MHz on the core is the absolute max it will take (910MHz threw a VPU recovery after 15 or 20 mins in Kombustor), but 909MHz survived a Cinebench OpenGL pass, 30 mins in Heaven 2.5, 30 mins in Kombustor and 10 mins of 3Dmark 11 test 4 (looped), at maximum graphical settings. (3Dmark11 test 4 loop for 10mins was advised somewhere I forgot) Gonna play Crysis 2 for 1 hour and then TrackMania Nations for 1 hour when I get up tomorrow, and if that proves stability, I decrease core clock by 10MHz (as advised by Stonerboy779 and Puck), and then I will move onto the memory

Thanks alot everyone! With stock settings I got 78*C on the top card and 74*C on the lower card, both cards decided to run at 44% fan speed at that temp (auto-fan) Let the overclocking begin!

    How to OC 6950 xfire?

bump - hmm I'll just put the questions here then When you say: "Unigine Heaven v2.1 or v2.5 at default, but with Anisotropy 16 and Anti-Aliasing x8 at your highest resolution in fullscreen" What about tessellation? leave it at normal? or put it to extreme? To be 100% sure: Is this the correct settings for Heaven 2.5?: API: DX 11 Stereo 3D: Disabled (I haven't got a 3d monitor anyways) Shaders: High Tesselation: normal (or extreme?) Anisotropy: 16 AA: 8x Full screen: yes Resolution: 1920x1200 (as far as my monitor will go ) If you don't want me to use Furmark, what other max-temp-test software would you recommend me to use? I don't feel good about overclocking and only checking for stability and not temps (crysis 2 produces more heat than Cinebench 11.5 OpenGL or Heaven 2.5 - and maybe other games produce more heat?) Bonus questions: What about a custom fan profile? Is it needed or a good idea? If so, how should it be? I still don't understand how the OpenGL test can test stability (well pre-test, as you said) on both cards in xfire when the 2nd card is at 0% activity through the whole test

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition

Yeah I preordered it on Steam just so I could set my clock to when its released, and start downloading it, so when I get back from school it's ready to be played

I am starting to see the benefit of your GPU overclocking method now... but I have one question: When you say: "Unigine Heaven v2.1 or v2.5 at default, but with Anisotropy 16 and Anti-Aliasing x8 at your highest resolution in fullscreen" What about tessellation? leave it at normal? or put it to extreme? To be 100% sure: Is this the correct settings for Heaven 2.5?: API: DX 11 Stereo 3D: Disabled (I haven't got a 3d monitor anyways) Shaders: High Tesselation: normal (or extreme?) I don't feel good about overclocking and only checking for stability and not temps (crysis 2 produces more heat than Cinebench 11.5 OpenGL or Heaven 2.5 - and maybe other games produce more heat?) Okay I know 70*C is fine for temps, but I don't know how high my GPUs could go, as illustrated... So if I overclock and get stable with temps up to 70*C in Heaven.. when I go in crysis... What's going to happen lol? if temps got 90+ And what if there are games that get higher temps? Aren't there any Furmark-equivalent programs (i.e. "max-temp" finders), that aren't so bad that you would use it, El_Capitan? Don't I need to know the max temps while overclocking?
  17. Brutality

    How to OC 6950 xfire?

Hmm.. I tried running the OpenGL test in Cinebench 11.5 and looked at GPU usage It only uses GPU1 (up to 70%) while GPU2 is at 0% all the time But I can confirm that Heaven supports xfire 97-99% usage on both But my worry is temps... I mean, the OpenGL temps barely get temps to 50*C and Heaven 2.5 gets them up to 65*C But in Crysis 2 I can easily reach temps around 70 If I shouldn't use Furmark (sure as hell produces max temps), what should I use then? I mean, I am afraid that I get a stable overclock, with temps fine in OGL and Heaven, but when I start gaming I will burn my GPU

    How to OC 6950 xfire?

So CineBench OpenGL + Heaven 2.5? Do I need to do something or do they both support crossfire? (unlike Furmark) - I bet Heaven supports xfire, but I just ask to be on the safe side

    How to OC 6950 xfire?

Should I use Furmark 1.9.1 or 1.8.5? And what settings should I use? so far I picked up I need to use fullscreen to make crossfire work (and possibly change filename of Furmark, to activate a cf profile, but I haven't gotten that far yet) Any specific resolution? what about AA? and why are there so many options?! >_< I wish there was just a button called Furmark and then boom, you're stress testing!

Yeah I think I'll go that way too But don't worry ElCapitan without you I wouldn't know how to disable the power saving stuff so thanks alot to you too mate!

    How to OC 6950 xfire?

They're both XFX And I don't feel comfortable flashing BIOS, I'd rather just overclock it Sorry for misunderstanding you, I read your post at 5:30am and was über tired, but on the other hand - How can I go sleep when I've just received my new 6950s Thanks alot for your advice guys - just what I needed and I knew I could get it here at OCC <3 EDIT: Argh ElCapitan, now I don't know which method to use mem->core or core->mem :S EDIT2: What dd you guys think about Furmark and "AMD throttling"?
  22. Brutality

    How to OC 6950 xfire?

So, you're not suggesting overclocking graphics cards for 24/7? If I misunderstood you - then can you please tell me the procedure for overclocking my 6950s? Should I just do like they did with the 5850s in that link, or do I need to follow a different procedure?

  25. So, it doesn't seem like AMD 7000 series or NVIDIA 600 Series are coming before 11/11/11, which is when S7LAN starts and the release date of TES V - Skyrim (Preordered it, oh yeah... steam ofc so I can start downloading at 0:00 11/11/11 lol =P) Now, I've had my 5870 for 1½ year or so, and I'd say it's done its "conscription", so time to upgrade =) So, in order to try to figure out which card to get, I went over to Anandtech.com and collected results of all graphics cards under DirectX 11 since this is what games are being developed with or in, or whatever you say. And only used 1920x1200 resolution results, since that's my monitor's resolution. This resulted in; Card__________Average FPS in each test____Overall Avg FPS 6950 cf________120,2+46,3+121,3+60,5+99____89,46 6870 cf________111,5+50,7+120,5+48+78,2____81,78 5850 cf________97,3+50,9+103,8+43,5+66,6___72,42 6850 cf________93,8+50,3+106,6+41,5+66,3___71,70 580___________82,4+41,5+110,6+42+63,7_____68,04 460 (1GB) sli___76,6+43,3+116,6+40+57,8_____66,86 570___________70,8+41,5+96,3+36,5+55,1_____60,04 480___________68,9+41,8+91,9+36+55,7______58,86 6970__________68,7+34,9+77,2+39+59,7______55,90 6950(2GB) _____61,8+34,8+70,6+36+52,1______51,06 6950(1GB) _____62,4+34,6+71+35+52 _________51,00 5870__________64,1+35,6+71,1+33+46,2______50,00 Pardon the commas, I am Danish and we put commas where you put dots, and dots where u put commas lol So, I bet these results are not super accurate, so that's why I ask you guys what you think Also, I only selected the the solutions which were better than my 5870 alone (according to their tests ofc, hence I ask you guys), and with a price less than 3000kr (=$556,36 or 402,96€ or £352,58), since I do not plan on spending more than that. The only requirement I have to the solution is that it must be able to run TES V - Skyrim in highest possible graphical settings at 1920x1200 without unplayable fps (= 23+) Now, I know that's hard to answer, but I believe you guys can give a pretty good guess But... I don't feel good about crossfire or sli, since I've heard it can cause tearing, so unless you can convince me, let's stick with single GPU solutions EDIT: I mean microstuttering Finally, don't take my 5870 in account, it's been behaving bad lately and is probably gonna die soon (feel free to read previous topics by me), so can't just buy 1 more 5870 and then woohoo crossfire - need 2 NEW for that Cheers and thanks very much in advance guys! <33333 OCC EDIT2: UPDATED LIST (removed cards I couldn't afford due to rapid price change in Denmark) Also: since there are no results for sli 560Ti, maybe someone can tell me where it would fit in the list? EDIT3: Updated list (can afford more)
