  1. Yeah, I gots a new card - first ATI card I've used. I'll update the rig sig in a bit. http://www.photobox.co.uk/album/album_phot...hoto=1427058860 http://www.photobox.co.uk/album/album_phot...hoto=1427059562 First appeared after I installed the display driver I think. Bought the card, uninstalled nvidia display drivers, and deleted related files in explorer and registry entries in CCleaner. Also removed all MS kb[number] uninstaller entries while I was there. Switched off and swapped cards, booted and downloaded latest official Catalyst drivers (...was this wise?) instead of using the driver CD. Installed display driver only. d/led and installed ATI Tray Tools via guru3d. Had Rivatuner already, uninstalled that and removed remnants with CCleaner. Installed Asus GamerOSD software only - not any of the other stuff on the CD. ATI Tray Tools asked to disable the 'ATI hotkey poller' service on starting and I told it to do this every time it runs. Played with some display settings and tried the low level OC settings. Actual problem is any changes to the clock settings or auto testing result in a bsod that mentions the Catalyst driver file ati2mtag.sys. idk whether to change it first or try another utility.

Question, Please read, 2 minute xp install

That looks great, syngen, I'll keep it in mind. Already have True Image 7 for myself. The installed program now errors out on creating backups (? even after complete removal and re-install) but the recovery CD still works fine for that.

    Free Games

/ I have it as a home page, but haven't been interested in anything there so far. http://www.gameboomers.com/FreeGames.html
  5. That old chestnut, you kidding? Interesting plans (excuse the source given). http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=15861 1-2 if that, I mainly catch up on older titles and (legitimately) free games. Bought a bunch of titles in the New Year Steam sale, stops and starts like that.
  6. Funny stuff. I installed Vista Transformation Pack 6... Trying to UNinstall it was what fubared everything.
  7. The MBM guide on here isn't hard to follow and the screensaver is great. I like Core Temp and the old free version of Everest as well, avoid using SmartGuardian as it keeps adding itself to startup processes whether I tell it to or not. Others: NextSensor PC Wizard Powerstrip (GPU) Rivatuner (GPU) Samurize SiSoft Sandra SIW SIV SpeedFan Intel Tat ATITool (GPU) Winstat Winbar

    Issues with Windows XP Home

You were asked for a regular username and password, that password should be what it asks you for when you want to perform an root user level task in a 'regular' user session.

remove all traces from the registry and hard drive

Using CCleaner atm. There's also ncleaner and Easy Cleaner, regcleaner and regscrubXP for registry, and Disk Cleaner for files only.

Oh Oh Guitar (not a) Hero

I haven't looked around for other coverage, but... do they actually have a case, or just this? Mind = boggled. *looks* Guess not. Hurrah for negative publicity.

    If you use FireFox

You're paranoid, Branjo... Adblock Plus and two or three good filter lists is almost a redundant rec now - essential. text to link addon - I use Text Link to just double click on the relevant text, the bells and whistles option is Linkification. InFormEnter to save hassle every time I clear browser forms data (logins etc). Open page in IE - likewise, I'm using IE View Lite, and rec IE Tab for about anything else. FEBE and CLEO are very useful. Tinyurl creator, translator, Stylish to customize the gui and toolbars etc set up as I want them. Yeah, I like Download Statusbar as well. Haven't looked through the addons site in ages, been happy with that lot.

    Chipset fan making noise

Maybe resonating against the card or the fan guard? But yeah, if you've had the board with the stock cooler for a long time I'd replace it with a third party one. Stock unit really isn't very reliable.

  18. I think this thread is for you. http://www.diy-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=77741 Wonder if you've been pushing the Opty? I wouldn't know of software like that to suggest.
  19. afaik (which may not be far) elitism is a lot more than being wary of the mainstream - even the opposite sometimes? Doesn't have to make sense, it often doesn't. That was just me, anyway, things are going to keep developing regardless. And it means a lot more choice for all. I'm largely one of those the topic applies to. Okay, I just felt like it was dismissing all the other things that made their name, which it obviously wasn't. And I haven't really used either OS (ME/Vista), just heard plenty about ME. Am as much curious about the actual reasons.
  20. Feel free, he said... I don't get Google as a white knight in the OS market, tbh. Idea of Linux becoming more generally mainstream at all bothers me (little as I have a stake in or understanding of it), there are sort-of principles to do with users voluntarily contributing practical expertise and assistance to others, and promoting FOSS, rather than slapping down a cash investment. And a lot of pay-for options in linux and unix packages are more sold on enterprise and industry solutions, professional technical support, security hardware etc... some that aren't just feel compromised somehow by the commercial focus, or sell out to the likes of MS when they throw their weight around... There are all the cons and potential cons of that open-source approach as well. 'With those two products Apple has an insane amount of influence on the market' is a comment I found hard to swallow. Or that about Vista being an abortion even compared to ME.

How to ask questions the smart way

Little bit extreme imo, though very good advice. Have wanted to link that to someone many times as kind of shock treatment (some people are just unreal, and this is me talking), but always decide against it. I liked this as well. http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/hacker-howto.html

    copy/zip/ghosting operational os

G4L - [paraphrased] 'Biggest issue is ntfs support...' Wondered about any options for linux backups though. Yes indeed... have a copy of an older version of True Image (v7) they were giving away a while back - required that you register with the website and d/l the installer via that account. Been very handy a couple of times. Things like Self Image and XXCopy/Clone for windows, but none with recovery CD function as yet - has been mooted for the former. imo always worth having a partition editor like Gparted Live CD or Ranish, or a package that includes the apps themselves like Parted Magic, ubcd or sysresccd. Again, that's just free options.
