  1. Does anybody have any suggestions on a good Firewire 800 card for Vista? I'm having a hard time finding a card with suitable drivers for Vista. PCI or PCI-e would work fine for me. thanks skenz
  2. Hi all, I have had it with the chipset fan that is on my NF4 SLI-DR motherboard! It's getting under my skin with the noise it's making. Are there any replacements available out there that will work well when the graphics card is located in the PCI-e slot and covering the fan? I've seen some third party coolers but it doesn't seem like any of them would work well with a PCI-e card installed in the slot right next to the cooler. Anybody have any suggestions? or experience with this? any pics you can share? Thanks skenz
  3. Roger that....just to clarify on my end as well...I've turned the speakers off to make sure the noise wasn't coming through them. I can stick my ear right up to the psu and hear the noise...I know, it sounds crazy but it's true.
  4. Um, I have no idea what you're talking about. It helps to have a point if you follow up to somebody's post...just a suggestion for you and your future posts. thanks Skenz
  5. I am having a problem with my OCZ GameXstream 700watt psu that really has me confused. It's the weirdest problem I've encountered in my 15+ years as a tech. I am getting "noises" from the psu that are directly related to things that are happening on my computer screen. NO, i'm not crazy! When I scroll my mouse wheel, I hear a "clicking" noise from the psu. When I drag a window on the screen I hear a "woosh" noise from the psu. When I minimize and maximize a screen I hear a "woosh" noise from the psu. When I scroll down through a web page I hear a "woosh" noise from the psu. I've tried a different mouse and that didn't fix it. Even if I scroll using my keyboard I still hear the noise frm the psu. I've switched around the video card to different slots, didn't help. I reseated all the cables and power connections as well...no go. It's almost as though the video card is drawing more power from the psu when it needs to refresh or change the screen image and that is when I hear the odd noises from the psu. I upgraded from a PowerStream 520watt and wasn't having this problem until I put in this 700watt GameXstream psu. is it possible the psu is defective? It's really annoying! Thanks for any help you can offer.. Skenz
  6. Hi everyone, Here are the questions I have regarding RAID 5 and I'm hoping somebody out there can kindly help. 1) Do all of the drives in the RAID have to be identical? (make, model, etc) or can they simply be the same size and I don't have to worry about part #'s 2) How do I rebuild a RAID 5 if one of my drives were to fail? I will not boot from this RAID volume. 3) Do you rely simply on your RAID 5 or do you also backup your data externaly? Thanks much Skenz
  7. Would you mind taking a little time to help me with the OC'ing thing? It's been way too long since I've tinkered with it. Maybe a quick idea on what settings I should shoot for? and what do you mean I may have to set my memory on a divider? thanks

  9. You know, I used to do a lot of overclocking but now I'm more into pure stability. I just can't afford to have my system crash during a photoshop session or editing video simply due to overclocking. I know...I can overclock and be stable, but I still like the security of running my system as intended. that being said, I've never been happier with any other motherboard then my DFI NF4 SLI. I love this board! If you look at my specs, do you think I could overclock with any success? What kind of performance gains do you think I would see with an X2 4800+ cpu? Also, if I were to bump up my GPU...don't you think it would be a waste to go with ATI as I'm running an SLI based system?
  10. I'll have to check those cards out..thanks for the tip. To respond to your two thoughts on the drives.. 1) WAY better performance with RAID5....I would agree with you there. 2) Yes, it is. Sure, loading a single picture wouldn't count for much...however...when I'm in Photoshop i'm doing a lot more then just loading a single image. And when I'm rendering video it also all adds up. I've run both the Raptors and regular 7200RPM drives in RAID 0 and my experience simply gives the Raptor's a HUGE advantage. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I do think that you have a strong arguement for cost vs. performance vs storage space..but I think it all depends on the budget the person has to spend on their pc build...and overall performance. I also like my 5 year warranty that comes with my WD's.
  11. The new GPU seems to be a common thought amongst you guys....so...which one to get?
  12. Well, I like my HP 23" LCD :-) Best LCD out there right now in that size. Good thought on the GPU...I could always use a better VC. Any suggestions on which one to get?
  13. Worthless? Have you seen the benchmarks for the Raptors? The Seagate's don't even come close to touching the Raptor's performance....especially i RAID 0 or stand alone. Sorry man, but you won't convince me or any other sane person any different. :-)
  14. Yep, For the first time in a long time, I've been given the green light to blow some cash on my PC. I have $500 to do with what I want. I'd like to blow it on my pc but if I can't figure out what to do with it, I'll have to settle for a new speedlight for my Nikon. :new_shocked: That being said, please take a look at my current pc specs and tell me what you think I should do with the cash. I want to get the most bang for my buck. I'm looking (always looking) for more speed. I don't do much gaming...so a new video card doesn't seem like it should be at the top of my list. I do a lot of Photoshop and video editing. Along with typical business apps. Here's what I'm thinking so far: 1) New Western Digital Raptor drives - 150GIG version. They're faster then my current Raptors and provide more storage 2) Bump up the CPU to a X2 4800+ 3) New case....larger and more breathing room 4) New keyboard (mine is getting a bit nasty) Any other thoughts or suggestions? Thanks for you time Skenz
  15. Does nvidia offer some kind of utility to monitor their RAID's? I'm running XP 64-bit and can't seem to locate any such utility. I'm basically looking for a utility that will give me current status of my 2 RAID 0's, etc. Thanks Skenz
  16. Have you guys ever heard of Autopatcher? I guess it's a pretty popular program that does something similar to what I'm looking for.
  17. You make a very good point. I guess I wish Microsoft would offer their patches in this way then.
  18. Does anybody know of a site where I can download ALL of the XP security updates in one single zip or RAR file? I'd like to slipstream a new cd that includes all of those damn updates. :-) thanks Skenz
  19. Thanks! and those aren't bad pictures at all. :-)
  20. I'd like to try adding cold cathode lighting to my case for the first time. I'm curious as to what color is best to use with my motherboard? Since the board is basicaly highlighted in yellow i'm thinking of sticking with whit lighting. Any thoughts? or pictures you can share with me? Thanks Skenz
  21. I'm currently running 2x1 gig OCZ memory on my system board. (see signature below for overall specs) I'd like to add 1 or 2 gigs more. What's the best way of doing this? Is it true that if I add another 2 sticks that my FSB will reduce down to 333mhz? Can you experts out there run through the plus and minus' of doing this? Thanks a lot Skenz
  22. the 91.33 drivers are not for 64-bit XP though....as far as I'm aware. And that's what I'm running.
  23. My bad....I see plenty of previous posts regarding this POS drivers....guess i'll wait for another rev to come out because these drivers aren't worth a damn.
  24. My god..I just installed the latest Forceware driver from nVidia, version 91.31 on my Windows XP 64-bit system. Needless to say, just before getting to the "welcome" screen....BOOOOOOM. serious BSOD and a hard crash of my system. Instant reboot. Going back to the previous driver fixes the problem so my immediate needs are ok. Anybody else having this problem with this new driver?
