  1. I was bored so I decided to OC my opteron 165 today. First thing I did was set the FFT to 205 from the default 200. Prime95 stable 1 hour FFT 210 Prime95 stable 1 hour FFT 215 Things looked flaky, so I decided to up the voltage to 1.40 Windows loaded, but again things looked flaky, mouse clicking at weird times. THen a blue screen Restarted, set everything to default. It will post, but after the windows load screen it just hangs and restarts. I did a short CMOS clear, to no avail. Now I am running memtest and it has no errors after 30 minutes. Still going. Tried a windows repair, and it said that I would have to format the hard drive, repairing was not an option. Is windows mucked up?
  2. Well, on my old Opteron build I think my MoBO is starting to go, not to mention trouble with the the LAN and boot trouble is causing me to look at a new build. Here is what I am thinking so far EVGA GeForce 8800GTS 320MB G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 ZALMAN CNPS9500 Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 Kentsfield OCZ StealthXStream 600W Now I think I am going to get a Q6600 instead, and possibly the 8800 GTS 512 I already have the HD and sound card, etc from the build below, and the components I am replacing in the below build I will be using to upgrade a friend's computer. I was mainly looking at changing to a different RAM, something better than 800, but was also seeing the MoBo has trouble with RAM above 800, so I am looking for some suggestions. Also, what do you think of the new price point on the quad? I will mostly be gaming and plan to do some OC'ing
  3. On my motherboard, I have to jiggle the VGA cable where it meets the GPU. The monitor will flicker, and when I let go of the cable the dicplay will go blank. I just received RMA #3 and I have the same issue. I have a dell 17" LCD, and I am using the analog output, but I am using a VGA/DVI adapter to allow the plug in to my GPU. I tried switching to the other plug-in on the GPU, but I have the same results, and I am getting very irritated. Sometimes the monitor will not have a display at all. I have tried other VGA cables and monitors with no change. Could it be the adapter, or maybe I should just use DVI straight to the video card? I am just irritated that I would have to, but maybe the picture will be better. It is starting to not feel like a GPU problem, but I could be wrong.
  4. Thank you very much for the response _xhp_ I will do this as soon as I get home from work
  5. It is off when the Temp is less then 25, and goes full on when temp is above 50. I Have now switched the CPU Fan, to a regular fan power slot on the motherboard and it continually runs. Smart Guardian Says my CPU temp is 190 degrees, I do not see how this can be accurate, with the system under no load (Just web browsing) and the Fan on Full blast. To clarify again, the when hooked up to the CPU Fan slot on the Mobo, the fan would spin for maybe 10 seconds, and shut off. Then it would never come back on. I hooked another fan up to the CPU Fan slot with the same results of 10 seconds of spinning and then nothing. OPtimized defaults are loaded, CnQ is off. Bios states CPU CORE temp " (-) 50" Smart Guardian Reads 199 degress for CPU The negative sign sticks out to me, perhaps it is reading it at -50 and that is why the fan is not spinning. There is no way my temp is in the negatives though FOr clarity, my HSF is hooked into a regular Fan port on the Mobo and is currently spinning full blast
  6. THat is not the issue, it is at optimized defaults, smart guardian is removed. It spins on full blast, then just stops half way through boot and never comes back on
  7. My CPU fan spins right when I boot, but not after, my temp control range is set at defualt, any suggestions?
  8. Resolved I guess, removed everything but essentials, and booted right up, put everything back on, still booted.
  9. Do you think I will be better off clearing my hard drive and starting over brand new? Or just removing the hard drive and CD-R, etc. And trying to get a boot from there?
  10. just tried 1 stick in slot orange furthest away, and slot yellow furthest away. Same results
  11. Well it was working fine, I had everything hooked up except the sound card. I hooked up the sound card and booted up fine. Installed the drivers, and rebooted and it was fine. I went to plug in my headset and my audio was fine, but not the mic. The mic was in the wrong outlet(or w/e it is called) So I pulled it out, and when I went to plug it back in, the sound card must not have been completely secured because it unseated a little. When I saw this happen I went to shut the CPU down, but it shut itself down before I had the chance. I opened up the case, seated the Sound Card, and resecured. I went to turn it on, I got 3 LED's , the third one blinked and went off, the second LED went off, the Internal speaker beeped, the fans stop, and down it went. I removed the sound card, with the exact same results. This morning I cleared the CMOS for an hour, left the sound card out, and nothing. Any advice to try before I take everything out again tonight and basically start again from square one with 1 stick of RAM and only essential peripherals. Last night My temps were fine under load, so I dont think that was the issue
  12. Thanks a ton for the advice on adjusting the temperature, as for the CPU temp being low, I dont know what to say, what HSF are you using?
  13. sounds like a good project for this weekend, thanks
  14. Yes, those are load temps. Thanks a lot for the help guys. Now to convince my self to try to learn about overclocking. Seems like there is a ton of info, and it is all a little overwhelming. Baby steps, but it seems like one paragraph in and I am scratching my head, lol
  15. No worries man, like they said, follow the above guide. Put my rig together last night. Do not flash the bios unless you have problems. Go one stick at a time. Make sure you hook the PS and GPU and RAM outside the case to make sure it posts before putting it in the case. Just check out the link above
