  1. Hey guys, I'm working here at the university and my boss is having me set up kiosk computers with only the internet on them to access the recreation departments websites. We're using Firefox and the only problem we're having is we wanted the browser to open automatically if closed so we ran it as a service and had it auto restart. This works fine sometimes but other times it won't recognize that one instance is already open and will continue to open up Firefox. Right now we're just going to leave the computer with the icon on the desktop so if it is closed it can be reopened and we locked out the rest of the computer, but is there a way to do this? We are using Windows SteadyState to lock it down along with various plugins for Firefox and some registry tweaks. Thanks guys.
  2. I figured you guys would be able to help pick out the right parts. I've been out of the loop for so long I told him to post up here and get some advice. Looks like it should be a pretty nice rig though and it'll be fun putting it together, haha.
  3. To OP, generally composite score is adding those top three numbers, not including those subscores, so yours is actually 1870. I took it once last year, no studying, got a 1990. Same on the ACT and I got a 32 composite, I think those were my saviors getting into college since my GPA wasn't all that stellar and I don't know exactly how great my essays were. I'm just a good test taker, haha, always loved multiple choice!
  4. Actually, that was really good, haha
  5. Hmm, maybe I will list mine here at the university and see if anyone's interested. I was thinking marketing ploy too, because I can't be the only one willing to spend upwards of $250 on a video game accessory... am I?
  6. Eh, well I don't think he's going to try anything to break in, I put in some account passwords so I think I'm good, plus I couldn't get the other prompt to come up with the Apple-Option-o-f to bring up a prompt. I just wanted a bit of extra security if I could, but this'll work for now!
  7. Alright guys, so I'm in college and I want some protection on my computer. Most of all I've got a roommate who insists on trying to use my computer while I'm not here. So pretty much I want to put on a Bios password similar to a PC but I'm not sure where to find it on a Macbook Pro or if there is this option. I found this website with instructions on how to do what I want it looks like, but the other thing I'm not sure about is if this will work with refIt because I'm using it to triple boot. Thanks guys.
  8. No other racing game fans out there? I'm looking forward to the (previously October) release of NFS: Pro Street on November 15th!
  9. Alright, so, I'm planning on triple booting my laptop... actually I've done more than plan it, I've attempted it for the last 3 days and haven't been able to get it to work right. I've followed various guides on the internet but have not been able to get it to work. I have my Mac partition all setup, have partitioned using both the Mac Terminal and using GParted, then installed windows and got it running and had a successful dual-boot, and then when I install Linux is where things go weird. Once linux is installed, the refIt boot loader will go to the Linux partition when I select the Windows partition. I know Windows was written on my last partition and I only have the 4 partitions allowed with my root of Ubuntu on my 3rd partition and the first two being the EFI loader and the Mac partition, but I don't know how to get all three bootable. As soon as I install Ubuntu I lose the ability to boot into Windows. Installing Lilo only gave 2 Linux icons in refIt and one Windows icon which still directed me to my Linux partition. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Oh, for the record, my Macbook specs are in my sig and I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 i386 and have tried every guide I could Google. Thanks!
  10. Wow... that's quite a bit for shipping... are there any other cheaper alternatives? If that's what it's going to cost I'm just going to have to find a bag around here somewhere...
  11. Alright, I am in the process of looking for a laptop bag for my 17" Macbook Pro and remembered (I believe it was nrg, can't quite remember though) the posts about the Crumpler bags. Well, here in the US the styles kinda... suck, and the only one I liked they discontinued, so I stumbled upon the UK Crumpler Bag site and... Wow! So, I would like to get one of those UK Crumpler Bags (Super Boomer XL in Black/Silver) but they won't ship to the US. So I was wondering if any UK member would be willing to take delivery of one and relay it on to me. I'm not sure how much shipping would be back here to the US and don't even know where I'd get a quote for that... so if anyone can help out, I'd appreciate it! Thanks!
  12. Glad to hear you've matured so much. And if something bad comes up at 90 or 70, there really isn't that much of a difference... heck if something bad comes up at any speed most people don't know what to do... Maybe I just sympathize with him because I know, at least where I've been driving here in So Cal, on freeways, the norm is about 80-90, and if you're not going that fast then you're getting idiots swerving around you left and right which doesn't seem safe at all, and in fact you can get a ticket for that, obstructing the flow of traffic, so really, if the cops want to give you a ticket they'll give you a ticket <_< On the other hand, to agree with everyone... You do have priors so you seem quite stuck and you will probably end up paying unless he doesn't show up. Good luck and Godspeed... er... Goddon'tspeed!
  13. I was thinking the same thing... Everybody here sounds like they've never done it in their lives... Maybe it's just cause I'm another one of those reckless kids on the road, but I know it is common to go down the freeway and be going nearly 90MPH and still have cars passing like nothing. But to the OP... well... although it is common, you were the one they caught, so... Check out that site someone posted earlier, see what your options are, but I don't think fighting this is going to do much. You can hope the cop doesn't show up and that would be your way out, but if he does, then it probably won't make you look too good since you don't have any defense. Why weren't you allowed access to the laser guns calibration records?
  14. Until he wrecks it somehow or even worse, he could be a great and cautious driver, but the people that he comes in contact with are also inexperienced stupid teenagers and one of them smacks into the nice new Bimmer... Can you imagine insurance and/or a repair bill on that? <_<
  15. Well... I'll tell you my story in brief and let you take it for what it's worth. I got my first car in December of last year. I shopped around for my car for about 3 months, changing ideas many times. My mom had told me I was going to get a brand new car and I was stoked, I had initially planned to get a Mini Cooper S or possibly a nice Mustang GT. When it actually got time to purchase the car my dad gave me a couple good lectures about how it is my first car and I will get into an accident... haha, yeah right, I'm an invincible teenager, whatever we think, but really I didn't think it would happen to me, but he was persistent and instead of a nice shiny new car I ended up with a pretty good condition 2000 Mustang V6 with only minor cosmetic details to worry about. Well... my dad gave me three months before I got in some kind of accident and I rubbed it in so bad when I didn't! Until later that 4th month... one of the first rainy days for the car going around a turn I went around every day I punched it through the turn, slid the back end out, got scared when it slid as much as it did, overcompensated and when it didn't regain traction to the wet pavement, slammed on the brakes and took the car through a fence, doh! The moral of the story is, we ARE inexperienced drivers no matter how much we don't want to admit it. Now, had I gone through a fence in a brand new Mini Cooper S I would have been pissed that I had ruined such a beautiful car, not to mention would have been broke fixing the damages to a car produced by BMW, or even worse, had I had the power of the GT I could have slid another 3-5 feet into that tree that was there and I could have died. So basically what I'm trying to say is... find a nice looking cheaper car. I found mine for $6k after being very patient and looking. You don't need all the power, I was always kinda disappointed with my V6 until the other day I actually went and test drove a GT... not that much faster in the low end, and how often will you be opening it up in the top end? So to end my rant, get a decent cheaper car and you won't feel as bad beating on it and having a bit more fun doing stupid teenage stuff in a somewhat responsible way, and that way when you do mess something up doing that stuff, it won't be nearly as bad... You've gotta pay to play. And just because I say cheaper doesn't mean so POS 30 year old car. There are lots of good looking Bimmers and such in the 10k price range, lots of V6 Mustangs and Camaros in the 6-8k range... I didn't want a POS either and I ended up having one of the nicest cars in school and paid less than half of what some of those kids paid for their Civics! Okay, my community service is done for my little accident, haha. Oh yeah! And we are modders, so of course we're going to mod the cars... Like in my case, it's so much more gratifying and impressive to have a V6 that can blow away GT's and turn heads! Also a much bigger aftermarket for used parts and more time has been put into whats out for slightly older cars, plus more experience from people who have already done that stuff to their cars! I've already put back in a third of what the cars worth into modding, haha.
  16. Haha nice! Something similar to this was posted on a Mustang forum with the same PlastX stuff and it did wonders for my headlights, here was a before and after I did on my headlights!
  17. Well I'm not sure what kind of power I'm actually pushing right now, and the salesman didn't let me take it out and open it up i the top end where I'm sure it blows away my little sixer, but in the low end it didn't seem to pull all that much harder than mine, definitely not worth $20k more used after my trade-in. Plus just the way it felt... I felt so disconnected from the car and the handling was terrible! It felt like I was plowing through the turns, similar to with my moms Excursion! <_< And the gas pedal being drive by wire or whatnot just felt so foreign, and then the shifter just felt so unsure compared to my Steeda. The Mac LT Headers weren't too bad... I dunno what's considered a lot, but I got a discount for only $295.00 same price some shops were selling the HTS ones for. Only problem is they really aren't making them anymore so it's taking 4-5 weeks after my order before they get in so I've got these lovely Flowmasters and Magnaflows sitting in my garage teasing me every time I see them! 4" Tips = B:) http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2643506
  18. Well I figured I'd give you guys an update with my car... the reason I haven't posted here in a while and why I'm so behind on all this tech stuff! I've been working my tail off this summer because all these mods come out of my pocket! So I've got that V6 Mustang over on Page 12... So far my mods are: IAC Restrictor Gasket Cold Air Intake .45" G10 Phenolic Spacer Steeda Tri-Ax Short Throw Shifter ASP 25% UDP Sitting in my garage are: 2x Flowmaster Original 40 Mufflers 2x Magnaflow 18" x 4" SS Tips 1x BBK O2 Extensions 1x Pypes SS Exhaust Hangars And on the way to my garage is: 1x SCT XCal2 1x Mac Ceramic Coated LT Headers 1x GT Rear Bumper Yeah... I originally intended my exhaust install to cost $300... then I decided I needed all the supporting mods... then I needed long tube headers... then I needed a tuner... then I needed a GT bumper... costing me over $1k... But it'll all be worth it for that lovely rumble in the morning When I get more money here's what I've got planned: I'm focusing on suspension next so my first buys will be Maximum Motorsports Full Length Subframe connectors Some 3 point strut tower brace Eibach Pro-kit plus Then sometime down the road... 8.8" Rear End w/ 3.73's M112 Supercharger Some 18" x 9"/10" Black FR500's... Various paint/vinyl add-ons (decklid blackout, taillight outlines, repaint) Cobra Front Bumper Cobra Double Reverse Vent Hood 4.3L Stroker Kit Ported/polished heads and TB That's the basics of it, I'm sure there's a couple things I'm forgetting, haha, but those are mostly my dream plans! After going to a dealer and having a dealer insult my "6 banger" then being completely disappointed with that 2007 GT/CS I test drove... I'll be heading back there when my exhaust gets put on and setting off some alarms...
  19. Doh... well as I'm getting all frustrated doing this my mom peeks over my shoulder and says "Why don't you wait to put in the CD until after that thing asks?" Sure enough... haha. I'll try that program though!
  20. Alright, So I need to burn a folder with a bunch of pictures and videos to a DVD. I put in a disc, create a burn folder, drag the contents in and click burn then it just says Insert a blank disc with minimum of x amount of space and then it doesn't do anything... I've tried CD's too and it does the same thing... What am I doing wrong? Why can't I get this to work? Help appreciated, thanks!
  21. Wow... this is crazy for just trying to keep her safe! As the other guys said the best thing is to tell her about what's safe and what's not, and then get a program that isn't hidden but can't be removed, that way she'll think twice about anything she does just because she knows it's on there. If she's really that intent on doing something, she'll find a way... who says she has to use that computer?
  22. Hey guys, so I was sitting in bed the other night thinking... I'm heading off to college next year, and it's going to be a huge change... I'm currently enrolled in the first session at UCSD and I'm pretty excited, but then I started thinking... why not college in the UK? I've always really wanted to go there and I eventually want to live there so what a better way to make this a reality than to actually go there for schooling? So my question to our friends across the ocean, would you think it would be better for me to stick out schooling here in the US or should I go ahead and try and get into a college over there? Now... there's no way I'm going to be able to do it freshmen year because I am already enrolled and it would be a costly switch, but even as soon as my sophomore year, I'd be willing to transfer if you guys think it would be a smart decision! The other option I've considered is just doing the study abroad programs that are available. And I suppose my final part of the question is that if it is better to go to school over there, how hard would it be for me to get into a school there and which schools should I look into? I'd like to major in Computer Science and Engineering possibly with something in Nanotechnology, but, pretty much any good technology related schools. So how hard are these to get into and what should I start doing to prepare? Thanks!
  23. Well, I know I probaby have some of the shakiest hands in the world when it comes to photography, so here's what I do. I don't have a camera tripod either so I usually use a rock or a wall or something I can set the camera on when I need to. Also you can just use the things around you to steady yourself and that helps too. When you do find something to set the camera on, use the auto-timer because pressing the shutter always moves the camera! But your best bet is to just get a tripod! When I can, I steal my dad's video camera tripod, haha. Whatever works, you just gotta be creative sometimes.
  24. Thanks for the links Kash! Well the thing that got me on the boat for a switch was the ability to run Windows now. Anyone used the Boot Camp software? How is it? I like the Mac interface and the video and picture editing and rendering seemed pretty fast on the ones I've used before, and now the ability to switch to Windows when there isn't the compatibility sold me. And I sure hope the laptop can handle the 4Gb, that upgrade from 2-4Gb cost a lot! And thanks for the advice nrg, I'll be sure to do that right away, haha.
