    Socket 939 Discussion Thread

    With official bios 4/06 and testing at 9x334, I set the memory at 250MHz (150=3/4) in an effort to isolate the problem. I was using 7 for DS and 1 for DDS. I tried all the other combinations including raising the Vdimm but none of that worked to compensate in passing 3DMark03 or lockups with EQII. My memory is #991493 but I'm not sure if it uses CE5 or CE6. Using 704-2BTA bios and 9x328, I have the memory at 268MHz (166=5/6) [email protected] and I completed an OCDB entry with it. DS is set for weak 3 and DDS is set for level 1. Basically, in my case, it seems like my CPU MHz is around 2950MHz (or slightly above). I tested by trying 9x334 then 9x333 and so on until I got to 9x330 and they all produced the same effect with 3DMark03. They all locked up. Not until I dropped it to 9x328 did it stop so I tested further and created an OCDB entry with this OC. Believe me, I tried the myriad of different bios combinations trying to stabilize 9x334. This includes using various memory dividers, voltages, timings etc. I looked at various OCDB entries using similar hardware for reference points etc. None of it worked. This was done with the official 4/06 bios and the unofficial 704-2BTA. I even got a Tuniq Tower 120 and strapped a 60mm fan on the PWMIC to remove cooling as a factor. --Fernando

    I agree with you. In testing 9x334 and Mushkin memory running at 250MHz (150=3/4) [email protected], it would consistently lock up with 3DMark03 even though it would pass the other 3DMarks. The funny thing is, ONLY after running Orthos for several hours THEN IMMEDIATELY running 3DMark03 was the only way it would complete the test without lock ups. It's almost like running Orthos conditions the memory controller for a bit; long enough to complete 3DMark03 (if ran right after). It appears like the memory controller resorts back and can't complete it anymore after its had time to cool off or something. --Fernando

    Okay, I've added a couple of new OCDB posts. My original was deleted (as it should) because I forgot to run 3DMark2001SE in the same screen as Orthos and the CPU-Z tabs. That's okay. 334x9 was not 100% 3D stable anyways. It would crash (lockup) playing EverQuest II Echoes of Faydwer and also with a single run of 3DMark03 (if not immediately run after Orthos for 8+ hours). This had me chasing my tail trying to figure out. I couldn't explain why 3DMark03 would sometimes pass and other times lock up. It's strange that there's no issue with 3DMark2001SE, 05 and 06. Anyways, backing the OC down to 2952MHz (9x328) seems to have solved everything so far. No crashes in either EQII or 3DMark03 (as well as all other benchmarks in the OCDB). Oh well, I thought I had a good chance with an Opteron 170 (CCBBE Stepping) of achieving the famed (but elusive) 3000MHz but came rather close. I lost ~50MHz in total cpu speed but gained 18MHz in ram OC (268MHz vs 250MHz) which is not bad with Mushkin XP4000 (2x1GB) @3-3-7-3 @2.7v. --Fernando

    FX-60 Question

    I think a better value would be: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16819103586 so long as you're willing to overclock from the stock 10x200. As you can see it's priced much cheaper than the FX-60 but of course you don't have an unlocked multiplier. But, you can use up to 10x which I think most use and bump up the HTT/FSB. The odds are on your favor that it should provide a decent OC. I got mine at 10x250 @1.35v and 10x280 @1.50v. For 10x250, I had the memory at 1:1 (250MHz) but had to use 9:10 (254.5MHz) for 10x280. This was using UTT CH-5 (2x512mb) @3.3v. I haven't extensively tested nor pushed the cpu to see how far it can go because I have air cooling. But, at 2.8GHz, this Opteron dual-core runs all my games well. Of course, I can't give all the credit to the chip because I'm also using a GeForce 7900GT (see my sig). --Fernando
  9. You're right. Thanks for confirming this. Was this done with single or with dual-cores? The reason I ask is that members have posted that going from single to dual core required an OS reinstall for proper detection and operation; at least this was implied with AMD X2 and Opteron dual-cores. I didn't take the chance when I upgraded from an Athlon 64 3700+ to an Opteron 170 and simply did a new install of XP Pro SP2. --Fernando

  11. Yes, it's basically that simple. Your bios is the same one I use on my Opteron 170. Just remove the old chip, clear cmos, and reinstall Windows XP Pro. FYI, dual-cores are only supported with XP Pro not Home edition. Good Luck! --Fernando

    SLI problems

    For testing purposes, try removing the Western Digital 40GB HD and Sound Blaster Audigy 4. The total +12v (36A) supported by your power supply does appear a little low for your particular setup. --Fernando

    Messing around with my UTT CH-5, I placed the memory ratio on 9/11 (11 divider) which runs it at 254.4MHz @3.3v and upped the bus speed to 280 (10x) and I'm enjoying 2800MHz at 1.5v. Still testing but it looks very good so far. I've passed 1m and 32m of SuperPi and played a few games for a couple of hours (Call of Duty 2, Oblivion, and Need for Speed Carbon) all without issue. When I get the chance, I'll probably complete my OC and log it into the OCDB. --Fernando
