  1. Well I've had a 300g Maxtor DiamondMax SATA C: drive crap out completely. What fun. The good news is I had most of my important, personal data backed up. What I didn't have backed up was my configuration. All the DFI specific tweaks and goodies ( I know I should have recorded all of this info but I didn't. Flames will be taken with equanimity. I'm a donk!) I used to tune and speedup this machine. So I am rebuilding from my environment scratch basically. My question is this.................. what software goodies do I need and where do I get them? I had something from someone here that significantly sped up my boot times, I don't remember who turned me on to that or what it was called, sorry. I am open to ALL suggestions at this point. I am replacing the Maxtor with a 400g Seagate SATA ( no more Maxtors...............). I will continue to run XP Home btw. I'm also curious if there is a way to (once I've got this thing setup again) backup and preserve what I've created? I have no problem buying another hard drive or a piece of backup software (although I have no clue what the best approach is to this problem). Thanks in advance for all ideas. Syn

    DEAD onboard Nics ON NFIIs????

UPDATE........................... 10 days later. Countless phone calls later. One to check out Dish network and DSL. 5 Comcast visits later (One guy changes something and the next restores or undoes it or leaves it loosely connected. Amazing). Only one from a line technician who will be back soon to re-diagnose the amazingly variable signal strength. Testing with Speakeasy speedtest gives speeds from 700 to 4800 within 2 minutes of each other. 3 Cable modems later All new ethernet cables later One visit to Fry's/MicroCenter later One backup DFI LanParty motherboard bought on eBay later. ( I like how these work so having a spare makes some sense to me. I have considered building an FX60 or 57 based machine but don't really NEED to yet. ) SMC Barricade Router is good ( now with a needed firmware update ). Onboard NICs seem to be fine. Tried a PCI NIC and that worked like a charm even though I don't need it. That's good to know. Tempers are severely frayed on both sides. Letters are being written ( by me, my wife and neighbors {one, the idiot signed up for Comcast VOIP and ditched her phone line. What a mistake that was} ). LARGE credits are being demanded. Countless hours of . i n g around later we are at least connected. This has been an experience. Syn

    DEAD onboard Nics ON NFIIs????

    Cute....................... Yes what? Syn
  7. I have a vexing problem (actually several, inter-related vexing problems) and I haverun out of patience with Comcast's customer service for advice. We had a Comcast high speed internet outage this past week. It took them 5/6 days, and multiple visits to us and others near us, to sort it out. Turns out an "amplifier" died down the alley which required a line technician to diagnose and repair (although the first tech recognized the problem and, allegedly, scheduled the, much more expensive, line tech the same day). God their customer service is a bunch of oafish donks! My question is this. When that amp died could it have "hit" my PC, destroying the NICs and my as well? My SMC7004vbr Barricade no longer seems to work. I have no idea how to test it. What I do know is that when I go directly from my Motorola cable modem to the one machinethat still connects (directly) to the internet., btw when I try to use the router it fails. A separate problem is that 2 DFI LanParty NFII machines that were accessing the internet fine before this all started won't connect anymore. Both have the dual NICs on the motherboard that are dead as far as I can tell ( connect a known good cable to the machine, try to set it up and it fails ). Ughhhhh! Can I just buy NIC cards and use those after disabling the onboard NICs? Having one internet connection just does not cut it at all. Another question: Is there any possibility, if the NICS are gone on these 2 boards, that DFI could repair them? Thoughts? Ideas? Flames? Thanks in advance Syn

    Raid Controller and other issues

I've had a couple of revelations in attempting to fix this sick puppy. For some reason I can't get Trendmicro's Housecall online virus check to update!!!!!!!!!!!!! and When I run Ewido I ALWAYS seem to get a memory error that hangs the machine so I have to reboot it. I can check the registry and its just fine but if I do a full scan or a memory scan it hangs. Something also seems to be disabling my Task manager from time to time...................... Thoughts................. Thanks in advance Syn

    Raid Controller and other issues

Well I asked for it............................ I am proceeding with some of the suggestions above. Question - Malware foums? Links, please, where I can upload a HijackThis logfile. I am gonna back this sucker up and, perhaps bite the bullet on a diskwipe. Thanks again. Syn
  12. I have a couple of setup issues and one browser issue (I think) plaguing me. Nothing radical - just annoying things. 1) Raid controller - My New Found Hardware wizard keeps trying to install the drivers for a RAID controller. I am not running RAID. I am, however, running a Maxtor SATA drives. How can I get this to stop? 2) This mobo has 2 ethernet controllers, NVidia and Realtek, I am only using the try to NVidia, how do I turn off the other one and get it to stop showing on the taskbar as a disconnected local lan connection? 3) Azureous, emule, limewire issue ------------- do all these applications suck up all your available bandwidth? Is there some way to control/limit what they use? I've tried limiting them wih their own tools and it seems to do nothing. This cause my wife's machine, downstairs, to not be able to connect. Not good. Help! And last but not least and this one is trickier I believe............... I am having a browser problem. For some reason it takes forever to link (?) when I move to a second page (when I'm ONLY riunning a browser, not any of the above mentioned bandwidth hogs). I am not explaining this well............ I'll try to do better. When I click a link, it sits there forever, sometimes it connects sometimes it doesn't. If I go back and tryu a second time, sometimes it connects immediately, sometimes it just starts over. It does this in both IE and Firefox. My drivers are up to date, I have run AdAware and Spybot, cleaned my cookies, I defragged, and so on. I haven't a clue what is going on. A second machine running off the same router connects instantly and exhibits no such behavior. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Another thing that happens is I will start a download and it will boog down and stop part way through.....................what is that about? I have several anti-virus, anti-spyware tools on this machine. McAfee (I get this free from Comcast btw), eTrust PestPatrol and Microsoft Defender beta.................. Does running these at the same time cause conflicts? Should I only be running one of these tools? Which one? Any ideas, flames, severe batterings will be gratefully taken for some answers. Thanks Syn
  13. Got home today and there was a BIG box from UPS waiting for me! Inside was a BRAND SPANKING NEW BFG 6800 ULTRA AGP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sent it in to them last Wednesday and got it back today (a week later). No grief, no embarrassing interrogation, no bull, just perfect customer service. BFG rules................... Syn
  14. Well...................things are looking up. I got BFG on the phone and they didn't ask any questions to speak of, just said send it on in and gave me an RMA. I will include a note asking about an upgrade/trade to the 7800gs. Thanks again for the ideas and thoughts Syn
