  1. again...I'm putting out the same piece of information I've just given to others. This could be memory. Both my 1GB and 2GB dual channel kits from OCZ has problems at stock voltage on this board. From install BSOD to file corruption and the once in a while "I got XP installed but keep getting driver issues causing BSOD". I haven't been here in a while now but as I recall the fix of boosting the standard 2.6v to 2.7 or 2.8 worked for many in the early days of this board. Also, I'm not sure of the status, but the performance of the included Sil3112 had issues located in the ATI SB400 chip. Use the external Sil3114 chip instead. This applies to RAID and non-RAID. gluck
  2. What happens when you attempt XP install? I had issues before with install crashing and file corruption during install. for me and many others, it came down to running the memory above stock voltage. Vista installs fine...that's probably because of code that has higher tolerance. A friend of mine was overclocking...he could not get close to booting windows xp but was able to start gentoo linux without problems with a 3D desktop.
  3. yeah...unfortunately...many users of this board had experienced this issue. I had to use 2.8v on my OCZ 1GB Gold 2-2-2-5 at stock and set to cas 2.5 just to install windows. lower caused file corruptions. That stick I pushed to 3.18v The Platinum modules do not gain any stability over 2.9v. OCZ has lifetime warranty for 2.8v for most of their ram except VX type which is 3.5v. You get the idea for headroom.
  4. As for "who can't hit 3Ghz with Opty 165?" I sit at 2.7 with Opty 170 :confused: I'm finding that I'm getting boot issues first time starting up system when the cpu is at 31C...I jacked up the voltage and it's fine. never happened before but that was summer time...LOL (I can't call this a cold bug either cus I'm no where near subzero) Anyway...I'm running X1900XT and the performance is spectacular. There should be no problems trying to hit high performance. Btw...remember that you can mod that Ultra-D to SLI I think a lot of ppl are really pissed with the RDX200 board because everyone had to have it...but soon after came 3200 which had little issues in comparison. I'm sure the later rev. 200 boards are much better but I have the first rev and still can't use mem dividers below 166/200...so my memory is still holding me back
  5. Yes, they will work. I have them, you may want to check if they might work better in the secondary slots. Very important! You may notice stability issues and crashes with a standard RAM voltage on this board. Set it to 2.8...at 2.9 you can hit around 225 with those sticks. gluck
  6. Yes, this weird shut down thing is kinda anoying. funny thing is that it never happened when I had my Venice @2.7, 1.63v. It started happening after the Opteron dual core. Yes, my water cooling solution is at fault. I'm thinking that it can only put away 200Watts of heat. I have 2 radiators, one copper and one aluminum. The X1800XL is also in the loop...so together with the opty...we're looking at a lot of heat. I'm thinking of something around 400 bucks...a 2x12cm rad and a 1x12cm rad...for CPU and graphics. That should bring my load temps to around 40-45C even if I bump up the voltage even more. My main concern here is that what can this board take in terms of power supplied to the CPU? I'm already hitting 70C on my PWMs. I'm gona look around...maybe get my finger burnt a little...but I'm gona see if I can improve the cooling solution on it. http://ericxw.isa-geek.com/cRyObLaZe/ This is my previous system...I'm using the same case and same cooling for the current one. I'll bring an update to that a little later with my new setup.
  7. Yeah...I know...the same cooling system kept my venice 3200+ @2.7, 1.63v at 38C load. This dual core opty is one power sucker...lol...but is damn fast!
  8. Issue #1: Boot sector? This has happened twice now. Once about 1 month after I built the system with an A64-3200+ @2.7Ghz, now again, about 1 month after I put in my Opty 170. The system refused to boot as if there's no OS installed...but does not give me any errors saying no boot loader found. The BIOS is perfectly fine...and no red LEDs on. This just randomly happened both times (ie. I come home, turn it on, and it starts doing this when the system has been fine the previous day). The second time this happened was yesterday. I found a workaround yesterday when I was reinstalling windows. If you say install without formating to the current install partition...the setup did a maintenace on the drive...system reboots...letting it boot from HD brings back windows xp. Almost as if the master boot record got messed up...but when I used the command to recover mbr from WinXP CD in rescue mode...it didn't help. My 2 drives are on ports 0 and 1 on the Sil3114 controller in raid 0. Issue #2: Weird shutdown. This started after I installed the Opty 170. Sometimes after I shutdown the system...power goes off for a few seconds (this time is random)...and then the system starts up again!!! I'm out of ideas on this one here. :confused: Question: Power regulation heat. So after my opty 170, I've been getting some high numbers on the PWM temp readings. The opty has a stock power rating of 110Watts. Temps are fine at stock [email protected], but once I get to [email protected] the PWM goes to 70C on load. I recall my Venice was at [email protected] and the PWM never went over 55C. At this point I can't go higher with the voltage. This is a limitation of my water cooling system. Anything higher than 1.43v I get load CPU temp of 60+ (a 10C jump). But I'm thinking of going for a new watercooling system that could dissipate that extra heat and shoot for 3.0Ghz. My question is...How much power (in Watts, or any other type of data) can this board provide to the CPU? The Opty @stock means a 84.6Amp current. Now when we overclock, this number will go higher as we up the voltage. For all I know I could be pushing close to 100Amps! :eek2: (in comparison I think the Venice has a power rating of [email protected] translates to 58.6Amps at stock) But of course, I don't think 84.6Amps is going through 1 wire as that would burn it in a split second. I don't wana go too far into the power design of the CPU. Thanks in advance to everyone and the DFI ppl!
  9. I've no idea about the 3112 controller...but I do know that many ppl have had majour issues with it in terms of speed in most cases. the 3114 controller is the way to go and from what I know it's not bridged onto PCI but to the south bridge or something.
  10. Okay, so you are having pretty much the same issues as most ppl...except for the random characters that are comming up...but... Read the thread about 4-led boot problem...and don't forget to get the beta bios. That should get rid of your problems. If you find that windows is failling to install or CPU/RAM intensive apps are crashing...up the voltage on the ram. g'luck!
  11. is it beeping at u every 5 minutes when the board is operating? (ie. it POSTs) I see that ur running 4 sticks of ram. You might want to take a look at the thread by Angry_games. You might need to do 2T command and some other things. I have 2 sticks of OCZ...which was causing windows install failures and file corruptions for me until I upped the voltage to 2.8+.
  12. hmm...interesting... I would suggest going with PS/2 KB/Mouse...that worked for some...but u had that thing running for a month without problems...this could be an RMA

  14. have you tried a PS2 keyboard and mouse? You would notice in the previous posts that USB mouse is having an issue on the board. I you can get it to pose using PS2 KB/mouse...disable the USB mouse support option in the bios and everything should be fine. This will still allow u to use ur mouse in windows. A lot of people have had success with this workaround...if it doesn't work...I'd probably return it for another one. If you can get it to POST with that method...upgrade to the beta BIOS...which seemed to address a few key issues. Good luck.
  15. well...it looks like a lot of problems on this board is USB related...primarily USB mouse. Disable USB mouse support in the BIOS and everything should be good. If in case you get windows blue screens/file corruptions...it maybe the RAM...I had to up my voltage to 2.8 to get windows installed. I'm now running 225Mhz @3.1v but a Cas timming of 2.5
