  1. my ballistix 2x1gb just went bad as well...though i had a big problem till i pulled the sticks...they were slilghtly over clocked and i had a fan on them the entire time in a huge, well cooled case. they were very cool...Always. any suggestions on how to get some $ back, as they were like 300$ when i bought them 7 mo. ago. tks
  2. ADMINS: I apploigize for the double topic/post earlier that an admin merged back into one post i have above, but that issue has been resolved and this (below) is the main issue, and is un-related, could you delete the previous thread and keep this one please? Thanks I had a Raid from a rocket raid pci card that was JBOD (4 x 500gb disks = 1 2tb volume, not raid0) that pci controller crashed and will not work in any of my machines (in fact casues any machine its put into, to not boot). I've taken the 4 drives out and connected them to a machine i have with a SLI DR and the nf4 chipset raid. when i press f10 and get the nf4 raid screen i see all the drives and am asked to make a raid: My question is, can i just add all the drives to a new array and set the type to "spanning" (which is what the NF4 raid screen calls JBOD). and have my old raid back? if not what is the best way to recover this raid..the drives are fine, just the controller whacked out, and from what i understand JBOD is not hard to recover since its not really a raid. edit: i did yesterday tryd loading one of the 500gb drives using the machine in my sig. but windows only wanted to initialize it and did not see any volumes...ive refrained from running any recovery or such software since i dont think there is damage, just no working RAID controller. i also dont want to buy a new card to replace this one since one i get it back, im putting them on a GOOD promise card. tks _____

  4. I dont have it in my sig since this is a machine for someone else and as soon as i can get it stable i'm letting it go. I will be removing the board today as i'm buying a new one and replacing it (a gigabyte one..eeekk). But i will report back, its pretty simple to test, Power up and you either get a PC beep or not. Angry games told me not to use DFI for servers!! i should have listened! i was just too cheap to buy a tyan. anyone seen this before or have any other ideas? tks
  5. i have a dafg board i just got. I put in a ROcket Raid PCIe raid card that goes to 4 x 500gb drives. running windows 2003...everything is great..machine ran 24/7 for about 4-5 days then yesterday when doing a Par2 recovery the system froze and would never boot back...just a black screen and no "pc BEEP" at startup. very angry, since this is supposed to be server (i know, use other MBs..i now realize that) I start removing parts and trying to boot...the issue, ANY PCI-E card!! i have 3 different ones here (2 raid and one graphics) if ANYTHING is in the pci-e slot the mahcine will not boot, remove it it runs just fine as before (my system is on a 250GB SATA that goes to teh NF4 controller on the board). tried clearing CMOS over night, tried optimized defaults, 1 stick of ram. any ideas as to a fix or what happened? btw; the machien i'm talking about is NOT the one in my sig below. tks

I need you guy's honest opinion

haha thats so funny. Actually yes that is who i will be using.. with all the jokes going around.."who want to colocate in new orleans" ... "how dumb can you be.." ... those guys weathered katrina, they can handel anything. THey have 3 1/2 week of reserves and in that amount of time i can setup else where if ever i had to.... I think they only lost power for like 3 days during katrina too...i toured their facility.. certinly bad ace!. www.zipa.com is the ppl, i was not going to law school in the fall i would try hard to work for them with the labor shortage around here...plus networking is what i do....btw check out the "tour our facility" link in the upper right..through picutres and they are not BS since i literally toured the facility monday. here is what i have so far: Tyan S2875ANRF (Tiger K8W 8151) Audio/LAN/IEEE-1394/8X AGP/SATA Raid REG DDR ATX 940-pin ONE AMD Opteron 244 1.8GHz 1MB 64/32 Bit (940) 1 GB DDR (400) PC-3200 REG ECC Corsair Low Profile (CM72SD1024RLP-3200) OCZ GameXStream OCZ600GXSSLI 600W ATX 2.2/EPS/SLI Power Supply All that and a good 2U case... Its ok to use only one CPU right? I dont need much power at all, it will simply be a machine that is backed up to, but must be up. I will prob. have either 4 or 6 HD's running off this machine / psu. thanks for all the help so far. joe

i'm assuming when you say hardware controlled nic you mean most pci nic's (not one onboard) like and intel or broadcomm chipset.. here is what i have so far: Tyan S2875ANRF (Tiger K8W 8151) Audio/LAN/IEEE-1394/8X AGP/SATA Raid REG DDR ATX 940-pin ONE AMD Opteron 244 1.8GHz 1MB 64/32 Bit (940) 1 GB DDR (400) PC-3200 REG ECC Corsair Low Profile (CM72SD1024RLP-3200) OCZ GameXStream OCZ600GXSSLI 600W ATX 2.2/EPS/SLI Power Supply All that and a good 2U case... thanks for the quick response...i guess after thinking about it you guys are right. im just taking for granted my 14+ years of very good luck with "computers" (i used macs and *nix systems up till about 1yr ago at which point windows became my primary sys .) Im going to start reading into some more server related parts...in the mean-time if anyone has any specific parts they know are good/reliably please point them out. EDIT: or any good places to buy server oriented parts since newegg does not cover everything i see... thanks joe
  9. Ok so i'm about to build a rack mount 3U server that i will be running backup services @ a colocation site, from. I would like some suggestions on the MB you guys suggest even if not dfi. I'm obviously here ONLY going for reliability and will be doing NO oc'ing of any kind. I just assume get an expert board since i know dfi MB's are made with high quality parts. Pair this with a quality ocz PSU, a backup nic PCI card, a 2nd RAID pci card (i will use NV and pci, NOT SI 3114 controler.) and some good ram and an x2 3800. + a nice 3u rack mount case and i should be good :/ like i said, reliabilty NOT speed, the place i'm colocating at is in New orleans and had 100% uptime through all katrina, so it will be my equpiment failing not theirs What do you guys think? or is their a better MB i should be going with for this application/ tks joe EDIT: oh and some bad ace fans ofcorse
  10. I have...these were the drivers that i VERY first used. Using the logic u guys outlined in the post above this. HOw should i install them? all i could do was right click on the .ini file and install it like that.
  11. i had so many probs with my last expert board that i bought a new one. everything works great including my nvidia raid0 but i can NEVER get anything to come up on the sil controller. i've read all the threads about the drivers but when i point windows to the folder of the sil drivers stupid thing says it still cant find the drivers. THIS HAS BEEN TRIED ON AN EXISISTNIG INSTALL AND A BRAND NEW FRESH REFORMAT AND INSTALL OF WIN XP. what is the deal? anyone? I have a raid 0 config with 2 driver and then one non raid drive. Device manager sees "raid controller" but has a ? mark due to drivers. Setting the bios to SATA will let me see all the drives in the bios, it even lets be boot from one till i get to the point where i choose which windows install to boot from, from the disk. I get a BSOD if i try to boot..but as i said booting is not what i want from the sil controller, i just want to be able to see my a raid0 array on it. thanks
  12. yea the fan is kinda loud..i need to swap out my board tomorrow (got water on it..eek) and i may do some cutting to the psu case and add some more fans. but the Psu is Server eps and the fan is amazing how closly it is to the loads..it adjusts to the temp and i always shove 2 thermal probes into the grate on my psu to monitor the temp on the front, and this one is 29-31c and my old one was ~45c at load...not a good comparision but im not worried about heat..just the noise which i dont like either
  13. I had a coolmax crap..the one with the 120mm fan. I should not say crap bc it served me really well for about 9 mo. on a sli-dr board with 3 graphics cards, 5 serious fans, 4 HDs and a x2 3800 at 1.56 vcore at 2.49ghz. 26 hour dual p95 stable too. i run this machine 24/7 btw i would monitor the rails with a v meter and idle it on 12v (i consider the most accurate, important) 12.05...under load it woudl drop to 11.9 some times as low as 11.85. i got a pretty hard core water cooling set up and maybe another drive and then some times the psu would just shut off after like 2 or 3 days of use. i re read a ton of reviews and posts and stats and came across this Akasa Power Plus 650w server class. amazing stats, extreme ocin'g custom psu testing rig could not move this thing. anyway now my machine is pulling alot more, 8 HD's 9 fans, 1.67 vcore on the x2 and 2 x 7300 gforce cards now and the rails always stay pinned at 12.23-12.17 im sure some one else will post the stats on this psu since im lazy to pull them up. but what do u ppl think of this psu? anyone else have one? i can find any mention of them anywhere in the forums or in the huge PSU thread. joe
  14. can anyone confirm using 2 or more nvidia cards NOT in sli setup on an expert board? what about a pci-e and a pci (more important) im about to order a replacement board and i need confirmation that this works on the expert board. sharp: please dont merge this thread, you did that and I got ONE response to this simple question. thanks joe

    Expert Wont Post

eric have you tried pulling out the battery on the board? im assuming you did this as part of a good cmos clear but i had a expert board that had the same symptoms and the only thing that fixed it was pulling everything + the battery. otherwise, im sure its the cpu. if u cant get a new one, can u try that cpu in another board?
