  1. Ok so recently my computer has been emmitting a high pitched ringing / screeching sound it sounds like ringing you get in your ears. I have determined that its coming from the power supply or another part near it.

This computer has been running fine for about 5 months with none of this screeching. Odd thing is it only appears when I turn the computer completley off, it might still be going when its on and I can't hear it with all the fans on but im not sure. The only way I can get rid of it is to unplug the powersupply or shut it off. So I would like to know if anyone has heard of this or has suffered from similiar computer symptoms, this is very annoying. And the computer still runs fine when its on.

    Thanks for any feedback

  2. the weird sound is prolly the same .1 second of whatever you were hearing when it froze, worry about the ferezing but not the sound :P

I have seen many people with that problem, trouble is it usually never gets resolved or if it does its always by a different method,

I had that problem while playing HL2 and CSS all the time I sent back my gfx card still waiting for a new one doubt it will help though. maybe try using a much older driver like one of the 77.77 ones

  3. Going to try disabling cpc as crusader mentioned and see if that helps at all. I already set my ram settings to all auto and 2.8v as sharp suggested but that did not do the trick.

Undesirable: I was thinking that too, but the card worked great in a different system. I even had it OC'd some to see if I could break it and it ran flawlessly.

I am not overclocking my CPU or video card at all while I am getting these problems.

I have the same problems that you are experiencing except I don't get your error message, I called EVGA and they said it could be bad memory on the card and am currently waiting for them to send me a replacement card.

What version of the card do you have I have the 516 model which has alot of problems, and what games does it freeze in? because I froze in css and hl2 all the time but wasnt a problem in COD2. Let me know if what your trying fixes it.

  4. I have 2 computers plugged into 2 different power strips but those powerstrips are both plugged into 1 outlet. I havent had any lights flickering in my house but im just concerned that my 2 comps arent getting all the juice they need. So I wanted to know if having 2 computers plugged into 1 outlet is a bad thing? they both run of course but they have their share of small problems.

  5. does it freeze liek more often joining servers and loading new maps or mainly in action because your harddrive is barely used in game ....i seriouslky doubt its your hard drive if your hard drive was bad windows would not work and stuff would take forever to load

anyways check into your stability how many test have you ran ..tried different drivers ?

i think its your ram or cpu or video card or your computere is not getting enough power which would be causing the prob .. change drivers then run p95 and other tests to see if its stable and redo overclocks on the vid card if you have done so my games would lock up because my video card was too overclocked

Well i've only tested 3 games on this comp so far, HL2, COD2, FEAR

it lockups constantly on hl2, lockups rarely in fear, and never in COD2 but artifacts in all 3 games, i've already RMA"d the video card and am waiting for a replacement to come back soon so cant do anything until then.

I was thinking the PSU might be contributing to the problem because when im in my BIOS menu the volts kinda jump around a few .1 - .01 I dont know if the volts should be jumping around at all but when I spoke to a tech guy he said it sounded ok because the volts were very close to the requirement. and I did a memtest on my ram for 5 or 6 hours and no errors so I dont think its the ram either.

  6. I've been having trouble playing games on this new rig of mine, it lockups alot and gives me some graphic artifacting. I read somewhere that the lockups could be because of a bad harddrive and I wanted to know if there is a way to test it, its probably not bad because I can do most everything except game on it but I would like to give it a shot anyway. So if you know how i'd like to know thx!

  7. Ok so I did a memtest86 today for about 5 hours, no errors, so I rebooted the computer and tried to get into the BIOS to turn of memtest. But when I rebooted it only gave me this screen that had a menu of different Bootable Devices to boot from, and no matter which I boot from it goes back to memtest and if I reboot from the memtest screen and I press esc it takes me back to the bootable devices list, so my question is how am I supposed to get back into BIOS now???

  8. I had the same exact problem. I had to screw around with the BIOS settings...make sure FSB ratio and maybe some fo the RAM timings are not set to Auto. When I manually set my processors speed, it booting fine for me...

did that problem occur after the driver update? because from what ive seen my bios settings are the same still

  9. Ok I just installed a 6.70 nForce AMD driver from the nvidia website, after I finished the install and rebooted and the comp reached the desktop it soon went to a blue screen with text on it but it was there only briefly so I couldnt read it. Then it rebooted, and this pattern continues over and over. So when I powered down and turned it back on it couldnt even get to windows desktop it just hung at a black screen and I couldnt reboot.

What went wrong with this driver install, I guess I have to reinstall windows or something right?

if anyone knows what went wrong please tell me so I dont make the mistake again.

    ps. thanks alot nvidia (not!)

  10. Ok so I have this gfx card that was delivered to me with higher clock speeds than it should have so I dled coolbits to slow down the clock speeds, I had been having game lockups when it was overclocked and still having them when its downclocked but i noticed when I was using coolbits that there is a 2nd tab for 2D gfx which was still overclocked, so I downclocked the 3d one but forgot the 2d one could this be the reason my games were locking up?

  11. I have been having problems with my hl2 game freezing, it will just freeze for about a minute or 2 looping sounds, and sometimes it will freeze and different colors will appear all over the screen but that doesnt happen as much, and it will play call of duty 2 flawlessly, those are the only 2 games I have tested at this point.

I have read enough troubleshooting threads to decide that this might be a onboard sound issue. So I disabled the onboard sound and the game hl2 wouldnt even load.. I have looked through these threads and seen a couple people who had similiar issues but they got no answers at all, none of them ever got resolved so i'm just going to ask again to see if anyone has an idea how to fix these constant lockups.. thanks!

  12. Ok so I have a eVGA Geforce 7800GT 256-P2-N516, and im trying to flash the bios because im having problems with it. I have no floppy disk so im trying to make a boot disk out of a cd.

I used some tutorial on http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ and when I put the boot disk cd in and when it boots to dos all it says is like "ROOT KERNEL FAT GO!" and it wont let me type anything. im pretty sure I did everything right.

Anyone know of a better tutorial or can just tell me how to do this properly, that would be great thanks...

  13. I looked in the event viewer and didnt see anything irregular really, there were alot of events like "database engine started" then "database engine stopped" So I might try a memtest maybe that will show something

i just started memtest and it says the timings are 2.5-3-2-5, but on the spec where i ordered them it says they are 2-3-2-5 and on memtest it says DDR401...not DDR400 are these different timings and DDR# something that could be causing freezing during games?

  14. I just finished building my computer the other day, did not change any bios settings I just figured it would auto detect everything. So anyway I wanted to test it out on my free copy of COD2 and played it nicely last night for about 2 hours. But today ive been playing it and every 10 minutes or so the computer will freeze.

I looked around the forums for related topics and it could be the memory timings are wrong, but I have no idea how to change those timings in the BIOS. Also I do know my video card comes overclocked and can cause problems such as artifacting so it may be the culprit. But what I need help with is seeing if I need to change my memory timings and video card clock speeds. and I need to know how to do this in my BIOS menu. I already looked at some stickies on how to do it but im still lost on how to do it.

the memory timings should be 2-3-2-5

if anyone has any other ideas on why it may be freezing please post!
