Thank you guys for your opinions. I guess weighing the pros and cons, removing the IHS doesn't seems to be a great idea afterall.
I still need w/c because this X2 is Hot (55-60c at load) and i will like to cool my vga card and overall quietness.
-
I woke up today and ran Dual Prime(large ffts) on the same 290 x 9, 1:1 but it crashed within 30mins. This was stable for 12 hours yesterday...
Reboot, checked all settings are correct and running again now. I hope the error was a fluke.
-
lol your bad haha :shake:
Guess i have to seriously consider before putting the knife onto my 4400.
Not on this one. I had a bad experience with removing the IHS on an X2 4800...luckily I glued that baby back on and got it RMAd... I'm a baaad person. lol -
Wow ElDuderino, you have a very nice setup!
I'm thinking of using dual 3 x 120mm rads in my w/c setup with Storm, MCP655, MCW55.
Hope this can help me hit 2700mhz stable if not some more. I'm also praying i don't have a poor core that can only do 2610 stable.
By the way, did you remove your IHS?
I personally found that my x2 4400 won't do much more than 2850 stable if I pour in 1.7v.I backed off my overclock to 2750mhz and 1.54v. 250x11
If 150mhz means that much to you I would consider using an aftermarket HSF. But I would try it alone without ripping the IHS off.
These 4400s seem to hit a wall and won't go any further no matter the voltage applied. My loaded temps never get above 16c with thermal electric cooling.

Hi dfx, thanks for the links.
I'm now 10 hours dual prime(large ffts) stable at 290 x 9, 1:1.
However HTT 300 will cause one Prime to give an error. (the same 0.4 but 0.5 error...) Using multipliers won't help as well.
I guess it's my core 0 that has heat problems or can't go higher because it's always the one that has error when HTT is 300. My load temps at 1.45v + 110% is 55-60c.
Do you think it will be a good idea to strip the IHS and put this under a Swiftech Storm?

Hi Lance, thanks for the encouragement.
Mine is setup in a corner of my living room which has been designated as a testing area before it moves into my room haha.
I have now backoff to CPU 2610mhz and Ram 580mhz.
(HTT 290 x 9, 1:1)
This has been running dual prime for nearly 4 hours and i hope it can continue to 8 hours or more so i can have at least a stable overclock. Sure hope it works or i'm going crazy.
Also i was planning to put a good watercooling setup on this system but now i'm not entirely sure how the w/c will help me other than quietness... Anyway i guess i still need the w/c since my full loads temps are pretty high, 53-60c.
Thanks again man!
Hehe still at it huh?I did about the same as you, for over a week - I had mine setup on the kitchen table with laptop next to it to look stuff up. I didn't even place it into my office until I had decided what speed I was happy with...
I had somewhat similar issues - I could run everything except the HCI memtest for hours upon hours, but that HCI memtest would fail running CPU @ 1.6v at around 2700mhz, 2.9v on the memory. I suspect there may be some stable point up around 2700mhz for me, but I decided to back off to 2600mhz and lower voltages (1.5v/2.7v) and sure enough, all tests including the HCI memtest passed.
In your case, it sounds like prime95 is to you what the HCI memtest was to me. The guy raining on the parade. I'm sure you can find a stable solution close to where you are, but it may take lots more time. If it's going to drive you crazy or make you mad at your nice new system, maybe just back off 75-100mhz and see how it looks there? I mean I thought about the diff between 2500 and 2600 and realized, "hey, thats like 4% - what the hell do I care about 4% for if it's going to cost me another week!" I guess I'm just trying to offer encouragement here, no actual help...
Good luck!

I just tried increasing multiplier to 9. CPU is 2655ghz and ram 590mhz.
(HTT 295,1:1)
Both settings were found to be the highest stable cpu and ram clocks but when they are put together, it wouldn't pass Dual Prime.... I always get the same error within 1 hour of priming. (rounding should be 0.4 but given return was 0.5...)
Can someone please advise me what could be wrong?? Really appreciate your help!

I have increase Tras to 7, Trc to 12 and Trfc to 14. This is now 12 hours Dual Prime stable.(large ffts)
I hope when i increase multiplier to 9 to 2655ghz which is my safest CPU overclock, everything will run fine.

Sorry for the misunderstanding and forgetting to include this information. When i test the rams at HTT 295(where memtest is stable but Prime is not), the divider and CPC is,
200 Dram Frequency 1:1
Enable CPC
Well, I was looking and you are using the lowest divider possible of 100 1:2, my bad. -
Hi bigzorro, thanks for the suggestion. I will try prime blend and probably only do Memtest when all Prime tests are stable.
i made the same experience, when you want to test your ram 100% stable, use prime blend, memteststable says nothing, you will have to lower timings or htt... -
Hi Boppo, thanks for your advise. I will try to increase TRAS and report back.
For drive strength, i have tried 3,5,7 in memtest and all works fine but not Prime. Will try this as well.
DFI is starting to become a love and hate kind of thing...
When you changed TRCD to 4 you probably should have made TRAS 7.An excerpt from the memory guide
"For optimal performance, use the lowest value you can. Usually, this should be CAS latency + tRCD + 2 clock cycles. For example, if you set the CAS latency to 2 clock cycles and the tRCD to 3 clock cycles, the optimum tRAS value would be 7 clock cycles. But if you start getting memory errors or system crashes, increase the tRAS value one clock cycle at a time until your system becomes stable.”
For drive strength
Suggested Settings for DFI: From bigtoe: “If you are using TCCD you may want to try 3 5 or 7 as the drive settings as they usually seem to allow the modules to clock well. If you are using VX, or the new BH Gold, or any other modules from the OCZ range you may want to try 8 or 6.”
If those don't do it, try raising these two. Trc: 9 Trfc: 12

Hi ElDuderino, this is the first time i'm using a AMD cpu and DFI mobo. May i know what divider would you suggest?
How about a divider? -
I have been overclocking and tweaking my new X2 system for the past week but without success to make it stable. I'm sleeping at 3am everyday for the past week and this is making me crazy...
In case anyone will like to know, my definition of 100% stable for 24/7 usage is at least 12 hours Prime95(run 2 copies, large ffts), 100 passes of Memtest #5 & #8, at least 8 hours HCI Memtest, 3dmark and games.
First off, i started using the startup settings provided by Rgone in the stickys. Stock CPU and Ram speed. Dual Primed for 12hrs and no errors.
http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21248
Next, i tried overclocking and found my max CPU clock is 2655 using the below settings. Again, primed for 12hours with no errors.
Average temps are,
CPU : 55-60c (i know this is high but i'm planning to remove IHS and put on a good w/c setup after getting this thing stable)
PWMIC : 48c
Northbridge : 46c

Now that i have my max CPU at 295HTT, i set out to enhance my ram settings hoping to make it stable at HTT 295 and 300. (i'm not really looking to oc ram at the moment, just getting it to work stable at rated 600mhz will be nice)
a. HTT = 295
a1. LTD/FSB = X3.0
a2. CPU/FSB Frequency Ratio = 7 (underclocking the CPU speed)
a3. PCI EX Frequency = 100

a8. Chipset Voltage = 1.8 Volts.
a9. Dram Voltage = 2.9 Volts.
I used the ram settings as suggested for Gskill TCCDs in XS forums. Only changed Trcd to 4 because 3 will not work at all. (many users in XS also had to change to 4)

This setting works great and i passed Memtest #5 and # 8, both 25 passes each. Then i ran HCI Memtest for 8 hours, 4000%+ completed with 0 errors.
But my problem is when i tried to run Dual Prime(large ffts) with this supposely stable ram settings, my Prime will only run for 1 to 4 hours and give an error. The error i get is rounding should be 0.4 but given return was 0.5.
I have tried lowering(7), increasing multiplier(8,9) and it does not help. I have tried vdimm 2.7 - 2.9 and it's the same.
Am i right that if i get an error that is so close, ie. 0.5 instead of 0.4, i'm already quite close to attaining 100% stable?
I will greatly appreciate any advise by the experts here to make my system stable!!
-
Have you tried the non-boot way of clearing bios and/or flashing to 704-2BTA? These have helped my system to be stable at stock speeds when even bios 623-3 is not stable.
Do you also have your rams in the orange slots? Well at least for me, the yellow slots are very unstable but the orange helps to give much more stability.
-
Thanks JiminyC for the clarification. I will not install the hotfix and driver when my system is all OK.
I have actually flashed to 704-2BTA or whatever the name is. This bios seems to be much less picky and i'm able to run stable for over 7hrs(dual prime large ffts) at stock speeds using the start-up settings suggested in the stickys.
Overclocking now but stuck at 2700mhz...
Thanks guys for all the help given to a dfi newbie!!
No, you don't need the hotfix nor amd driver as I have said. Try that HCI memtest, it sounds as though you have a ram issue, possibly one bad stick. I assume you have all 4 power connectors properly plugged into the mobo? -
thanks Lance. I will try this later today.
What i'm doing now is i have removed the /uespmtimer switch from boot.ini.
It seems to be giving me a little more stability and i pray it will continue haha. Prior to this, running dual Prime(large ffts) will give an error within 5 mins but i'm ok now at 15 mins. Let's hope this will continue to run good for a few more hours.
May i know whether you have installed the AMD Driver as suggested in this post?
http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26437
I did but it does not seems to do anything. Just wondering if this is required at all?
Hey another thing to try, based on your description of the memory problem.http://www.hcidesign.com/memtest/
this is a Windows memory tester. I say try this because I passed hours of BIOS memtest86 at 282FSB on my memory - but failed in minutes on this thing. I had problems.
Way I set mine up was to run 2 instances of the app once installed, set each to test half the memory, click ok a few times and in < 30min it can test 1800mb of memory (I set each to test 900mb.) I was able to find that I had problems at 282 but did NOT have problems at 260 with this test, pretty quickly. I then prime95'd for 21 hours, no problem.
You might try this test with just one stick in, then swap and same test same setup with the other stick. If it fails on one but not the other, bad stick of memory. If it fails on both, memory timings or both sticks bad (I can't see that) or something else MB related maybe... In any case, this is a fairly short test 20min a stick or less I think.
-
I read from another user from another forum that he has nearly the same problem as mine. However when he underclock his CPU from 2200mhz to 2100mhz or lesser, he gets 100% stability.
I'm going to try this tomorrow. If this is correct in my case, should i be looking for a RMA on the CPU?
-
yes after flashing bios, i did clear bios and load optimised defaults.
In fact when i started working on the system today, it wouldn't even boot up for some unknown reasons.
I have to use the no boot clear cmos suggestion suggested somewhere in this forums to boot up this thing.
So i should have clear cmos and load optimised defaults at least twice.
Did you load optimised defualts when you reflashed the bios or clear it after flashing?? -
hmm in my device manager, the CPU is indicated as ACPI Multiprocessor. Is this correct?
I do see and get dual core in task manager and is able to set affinity even when using SP1.
Reason for that driver causing XP to recognize X2 would be that it must kick the OS into re-recognizing the CPU and getting the MP (multi-processor) HAL in place. There is a Microsoft KB article someplace about how to do that manually, may involve device manager or something like that. But apparently installing the ACPI stuff kicks the OS too, good to know I guess.99% chance you remove that ACPI driver - and XP will still recognize you have 2 processors...
-
in my case of hoping to get dual prime(large ffts) stability at stock cpu speed, the patch does not help.
The "AMD dual core driver" that you guys are talking about, is that the one here:http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_ty...ties/amdcpu.exe
Because if so, this shouldn't be required for anything, ever. It's an ACPI driver that lets the OS monkey with the power requirements of the CPU, shut down a core maybe, etc.
Unless you're plugged into a battery or you have horrible heat problems, I can't imagine why you'd want ACPI even enabled on any non-laptop. I paid full price for this CPU and damnit, I want it working full time!
This driver would have nothing to do with Windows XP seeing 2 CPUs and shouldn't have anything to do with stability unless it just happens that when ACPI kicks in and slows your processor down it becomes stable at the slower speed.
If there is another driver y'all are talking about, please do correct me!
-
The ram timings i have tried is default mobo settings, as suggested in the startup sticky in this forum and as suggested for my Gskill ram at this link.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums...ead.php?t=57317
None work to give me dual Prime stability.
Have also tried setting Vdimm from 2.7 - 2.9 and no help.
I did tried placing a few fans to reduce temps but no help either...
Well my x2 4400 runs at 1.3v and stock cooler, and drops back to 1.1v when cool and quiet is enabled. Even both cores running at 100% load it does not go above 40 C. upping the Cpu core V will not improve stability at stock speed, it just shortens the cpu life.My 7800gtx runs at 42 C idle and 57 C playing BF2. 42 C onto the chipset (chipset ambient intake temp) means the chipset runs 48 - 52 C
System temp is 30 -33 C with a third party temp sensor/ display, the smartguardian records 34 -41 C ???
1) V dimm ? RAm voltage and timingssss? (stability)
2) A large front case fan was a must have for me with these boards and GPU. (thermal management)
-
Yes nice ram, that's why i bought it.
I did use as5 so it could be my ambient. Also all 4 powers is affixed correctly on mobo.
What i did today was install SP2, AMD CPU Driver, Microsoft Hotfix and the registry fix.
Then i tested running dual prime using only 1 piece of ram. It's stable for 1 hour+. I followed up by inserting the other piece of ram(2x512). However once i did this, one instance of Prime will give an error in about a minute.
Now i'm running Memtest. Test #5 has passed over 25 times with no errors. Test #8 has passed 4 times and still ongoing.
My concern now is even at stock cpu clock, i couldn't get stability when running dual prime torture test(large ffts)
Is this normal?
The ram timings i have tried is default mobo settings, as suggested in the startup sticky in this forum and as suggested for my ram at this link.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=57317
All of them does not work to give me stable dual prime torture test(large ffts)...
Nice ram. Its spd timings are PC4800(DDR600) 2.5-4-4-8 / PC4400(DDR550) 2.5-3-3-7 (Dual channel) so keep that in mind when oc'n. Your temps with stock hsf look ok. Maybe a tad high, you probably didn't use as5 (Artic Silver 5). I would replace the hsf with another, there are tons of links and also in sigs. I know this chip well, as I have one. Anyone who says they can run a toldeo on 1.18 is on crack. The toldeo cores have 1/3 more transistors than the manchester, however, both are rated from 1.34 to 1.5 according to AMD tech briefs. Undervoltong a cpu can also cause damage. I would leave most of your dram settings on auto except enable cpc and the obvious. But all timing related I would leave alone for the time being. You are much better off with changing vcore to 1.375 with 110%. Be aware, some people have had good luck in oc'n the toledos, some have not. The second core generally fails at some point. I would also mod case to include a a side fan to blow over the board. These boards also throw some heat as they require a ton a power and where there is power there is heat. One last thing, make sure all 4 power connectors to the mobo are properly seated.GL
-
Hi JiminyC, ok i will try this and report back.
Did you install sp2? If not you need to install it for winblowz to properly recognize that dual core -
thanks lowboy for the clarification. I don't have raid now but i'm planning to do it after everything is stable.
You need the Nvidia sw drivers for raid on the nf4, you need to clarify in SIG that you have raid array. The temps depend on amb temp to know if there high the 6800gt runs hotter than a 7800gt so those temps are fine,I have a leadtech 6800gt tdh that I beleive has the best stock HS and it will run around 55c idle. Most likely your problems are memory related do a search on the forum for your memory to find some help on good setup. Good Luck!

Hi Lance, my ambient is 30c and i'm running at 1.45v + 10% or 1.57v in bios.
At 2610mhz, it need around 1.52v to boot into Windows but i have not tested prime stability at this voltage.
It has been around 8hrs since this morning's fluke and dual prime is running fine. I still don't understand why i got the error though. System has morning blues??
