  1. This is actually a funny post to me. I use them on all electronics. My neighbor asked me what they were. We had a storm roll through here and lighting hit between our houses. Did not bother me, but my neighbor lost a TV, computer, Wii, electric keyboard and garage door opener.

I am keeping the power supply for expandability (more drives, fans etc..). Changed the ram to the suggested which does look much better. I am still torn on the HD, but only because it transmits at 3.0/Gbps and not the 6.0/Gbps. The main issue now is the motherboard. I can not find a MoBo that's AM3+ that seems to be any good. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the critiques so far, I am going to definitely look at the AM3+ board and drop the 3 channel ram. I don't know how long I can hold out before buying. This is a product rig, so you were spot on with that. Don't figure much will be needed in the way of graphics since I was looking very serious at just using the on board video, so I thought I'd throw something in a bit better but not a budget breaker. Keep em coming! off to make some changes.

  11. I use one very similar to this: http://www.bernzomatic.com/PRODUCTS/TORCHE.../3/Default.aspx It has many applications ranging from soldering, heat shrink, hell even lighting cigarette's...lol. I decided to get one of these a while back, so I can do more things with one tool. It stands up on its own and the trigger says in the on position to keep it hot. It has various tips for it and I have even used it to solder on PCB's. Works great and I bought it at Wal-mart for $30. Just a side note while I am thinking about it, wicking old solder is usually a bad idea due to the loss of control factor that comes with it. It would take very little to bridge the wrong connection and let the magical smoke out. An old cheap way is to get the old solder hot and use a baby bulb (one they use to clean noses out and stuff, cheap at the pharmacy) then suck the solder off. Usually does the trick.

    Build for in-laws

I have been asked for a couple years to build a computer for my in-laws (I know before you say it "you will be tech support for the next ten years") however I feel its the right thing to do. They are not tech savvy (their mantra is if it expensive it must be good) and quite frankly I am tired of seeing them get ripped off every time they try to upgrade. So far there has been a couple Sony Viao's, a gateway and a couple other brands I have never heard of, but the salesman swore they were the best. The use is very minimal checking email, surfing (wireless) etc... no hardcore gaming unless on line poker counts or video slots..lol, no video editing, no ultra intensive apps. So I am looking at a moderate build due to the fact they want it to last for a minimum 4 - 5 years and still be some what decent. They requested a few luxury items such as a larger monitor, better keyboard and mouse and a larger HDD. Currently they have a 2ghz intel chip running 1gb of mem and a HDD at 100gb. This is what I have put together thus far and am looking for some feedback. I am open to any and all suggestions as well. I know the price is a bit high for their needs, but I know it will last them 5+ years instead of the 4 they asked for. So tell me what you think. I am eager to read the feedback and or suggestions.

    Build for in-laws

Well I thought I would let everyone know how this story ended. I found out 3 minutes ago that she went out and bought another computer! I was not asked to go along nor was I asked for my blessing on the rig. So I guess it goes to show that with even the most honorable intentions people will still f things up.

    Build for in-laws

Its a catch 22 for me. If I suggest an over priced under powered Dell I am in the same position as if I built it. The added stress to this is I will still have to work on a bloated POS instead of one I put together. This is the conversation I have had over and over with my wife and the conclusion is the same. I might as well build one that I know will be good and deal with the tech as opposed to doing tech on something bloated.

    Build for in-laws

I told them a rough price of $1,100 before I was certain this was a serious list and they did not even bat an eye. I suppose when you are spending upwards of $3000 on junk this sounds cheap.
  17. Did you disable the blur effect in the games? I can not remember for the life of me what its actually called, but it will give you a blur effect if you move or turn to fast.
