  1. Why did your brother go for a triple channel kit when the motherboard he has chosen, socket 775 only requires a dual channel kit.

    Stay with 2 sticks in that board, hence the reason you have 4 slots.


    i7 (your board) has the triple channel memory feature.


    Running memtest on each stick is a good idea plus when trying 2 (don't bother with 3 sticks) see what happens.

    If memtest fails increase the voltage slightly.


    Also why not try your G.Skill memory (2 sticks) in his Gigabyte board? (And the Kingston in your i7)

    So you can't think of a good reason NOT to use thermal paste but yet you do not use thermal paste?

    Very strange.


    Consider this, your own statement.

    As I have said before, you don't NEED thermal paste at all. Your PC will start up and run perfectly fine without any, albeit just a bit warmer.

    As an overclocker or general PC user why would you choose to run your CPU/PC warmer when you have thermal paste at hand to help reduce the temps and improve thermal efficiency?

    By doing so your components will last longer, that seems like a very good reason to me.


    There are many examples where one can say "that doesn't mean you HAVE to".

    But is it good practice?


    Efficiency is performance, don't compromise.

    The memory timimgs will not cause damage to the PC, however if they are too low it can cause file corruption/BSODs or prevent the PC from booting.


    Change the timings to 4-4-4-12 and set the voltage to 2.1v and run memtest for a few hours.

    If all is fine then leave it as this will improve system performance.

  4. The CAS latency is dependant on your memory, as you listed 3-3-3-8 in your sig you can only set it to 3. (2.5 might work)

    As to why is says 3T, I can only assume that DFI programmed the BIOS like this.

    If it was the command rate is would say Command Rate and options would only be 1T or 2T.


    Your aggressive/expert settings might be what determines the command rate.

    The AGP latency setting is something that you need to play around with and use something like 3Dmark to find out which setting gives the best results.

    To low might not be enough time and to high can cause a decrease in performance, but this setting will not cause instability.

  5. tCL = CAS Latency. (3-3-3-8)

    No point going for PC4000 as it will just downclock it to PC3200 unless you overclock your FSB to 250Mhz.

    However if you wish to try some low latency DDR memory go for something with timings of 2-2-2-X @400Mhz DDR.


    The AGP latency is not linked to the card's video memory.

    The only things that look out of place are the Expert & Aggressive settings.

    I take it the PC has been working fine with the current settings in the past?

    With old age comes instability so that might be why however lets not consider that yet.


    What have you done so far in order to try and resolve the issue?

    EG, Load optimised defaults.


    If you look at the motherboard, are any of the capacitors starting to bulge/pop?



    Have you tried running memtest for a few hours?


    :: Download, extract files to a folder.

    :: Burn ISO to CD.

    :: Boot from CD and let the program run for ~3hours.


    Any errors will be in the form of a red line (lots of red lines)

  7. Even if the specifications are the same or very similar due to the chips being different they may not work together. Sometimes there are more timings that you have no control over and the memory controller may force one set to run at something which it cannot do.


    Here you go. (bit expensive)



    Or buy 2 sets of these and sell your current kit on ebay.


  8. The beep code = video error of some kind.

    Either the board is faulty or the PSU can no longer handle the power load.

    Would be good to have tried a cheap low end PCI-E card but see how it goes when you get the replacement board.


    Just a small note.

    Case fans always run on the +12v rail, black and red wires always go to yellow and black when using molex 3pin to 4pin adaptor.

    Plus look under the fans, the sticker will state +12v.

    You are correct about the hard drive power down issue, it is the power saving mode.

    Go to the screensaver section >adjust power options (not using Vista anymore so not quite exact on the detail)


    For the second issue

    Go here, then press on driver and download the Marvell IDE drivers.



    Not sure if this will help you but worth a try.

    Also in device manager what happens if you do, view >show hidden?

  10. Big hello to any DIY-Street members/mods and OCC mods/members.


    As mentioned in another thread I have been using Vista HP x64 for 6 months (testing) and have run into a problem which I need people to test.

    See sig for details on setup.


    80GB drive with just Vista installed (SP1)

    80GB drive with important data (30GB)

    External USB drive


    The problem,

    I wanted to tansfer my important data to the USB drive, this data consists of uni work (docs,xls,ppt), pictures (jpg,bmp.gif), game patches, drivers, mp3 files, acronis images of my hard drive + other hard drives, loads of other stuff which I need/emails. So its quite a random bunch and equals 30GB.


    Started transferring this to the USB drive in Vista and it started out at a very high transfer rate which settled down to 40MB/s and gradually kept failling until it reached 1MB/s. At this point Vista reported more than 1.30 hours to complete the transfer.


    I had a feeling that something must be wrong so decided to try copying from internal drive to internal drive, the same thing happened.

    Obviously I had no choice and waited the 1.30 hours for this to complete.


    Now I am not quite sure where the problem lies, it is either Vista or a drive setting that I have done with the Vista setup that has caused the issue, the same thing happens in Vista safe mode. (plus superfetch and readyboot disabled)


    To test I have wiped out the hard drive and put XP home and it did the same 30GB transfer in 13mins (internal to internal)

    So I am 100% certain that it is not a hardware issue.


    What would be good is if people with Vista can try to transfer a bunch of random large files at least 20GB to another drive to see what happens.

    I am aware that this is an issue that MS claimed to have fixed in SP1.


    - I had Vista with my drives running in AHCI mode.

    - XP drives have been tested in IDE and RAID mode <not configured so each drive is acting independently.

    Will try AHCI mode next under XP to see.

    And RAID <not configured under Vista.

    EDIT: Problem solved, Reinstalled Vista and everything was back to normal.

    My only explanation is that I must have done something with the drivers/settings which caused the issue.


    But XP transfer rates are still that bit faster especially when using the USB drive. (3 mins faster)
