  1. Seems a little slow so far actually. I guess I need to learn how to overclock it a little. It could just be Windows XP, or me expecting too much.
  2. Opty 165 on the way! Thanks guys.
  3. One more question - are any of you Opteron folks running XP x64, or are you all on Vista already?
  4. Thanks for the tip on the BIOS clearing. I usually try to do that anyway - reset BIOS, clear CMOS, use single DIMM for initial boot. Great info on this board!
  5. ok, so taking this a step further is there a write-up on recommended BIOS settings for an Opteron 165 (currently running 4/6/2006).
  6. Hmm, Opteron support seems a little sketchy. Maybe the AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ might be a little safer.
  7. Whoops, didn't realize it wasn't there. I'll update that. I'm using a XFX NVIDIA GeForce 6600.
  8. thanks guys. I didn't realize the Ultra-D could support an Opteron processor.
  9. Currently running what is shown in my sig block. Would it be worth it (performance wise) to upgrade to an X2 chip from the 3500+ single core?
  10. Just a follow-up..ordered 2GB of Corsair XMS (2x1GB) and loaded it in slots 1,3. Everything is running SMOOOOOOOTH so far. I'm still going to test and tweak a little as default settings are much slower than advertised (defaults to 3-3-8-3 or something). Thanks folks.
  11. OK, I've sold 1GB of it already, and already bought replacement TWINX2048-3200C2PT. Should be good to go once it gets here. Thanks for the help folks.
  12. Damn the luck. Maybe I'll just return the new two and pick up some OCZ stuff. Or, maybe I won't even notice the difference. LOL.
  13. I don't consider myself an expert, but I have been building boxes for 10 years or so. I know why I have trouble, and you're right about it being preconceived notions. Notions like with two sticks of RAM in dual-channel you'd think it would work in DIMM 1,3 with default BIOS settings. Mine seem to only work in 2,4. And notions like with 4 DIMM slots you could actually use 4 DIMMs at full-speed without tweaking the BIOS. Odd, I know. Either way, I'm happy with my DFI board, just wish things came without such frustration. I see some posts about manually setting the ratio to 1:1 if it's not already - I'll poke around.
  14. Well, after a lot of head scratching and swapping of modules, I have them all in and recognized - only they're running at 333. I had one pair in the orange slots initially. The board wouldn't post with that same setup later. I had to switch the pair to the yellow slots. Once I did that, I could get into BIOS, and set the voltage to 2.8 following DFI guidance. Now it boots with 2GB of RAM, but at 333.
  15. Yep, cleared the CMOS as per instructions. Actually, I cleared it for like 15 minutes just to be sure. I'll give your settings a shot.
  16. Once again, I assumed and it's gotten me into trouble. I assumed having 4 RAM slots on my NF4 Ultra-D meant I could populate them all easily enough. I popped 4 chips in, 2 pairs of Corsair CMX512-3200C2PT. Once all four didn't boot, I thought maybe a BIOS upgrade would help. I flashed to the April 06 BIOS (following Angry's instructions), no luck. So, I put the original pair in which has run fine up until now, and now that won't boot either. I can only get the box to boot with a single DIMM. Can someone please help this wayward soul? I tried disabling the CPC as well, no change. Thanks
  17. I'm using the ThermalTake Venus 12, pretty happy with it. My idle temps are between 27-30C. You can install it three ways too - full-speed, temp speed-control, or manual control.
  18. There's a few threads recently, including one of mine. My reported idle temp is between 27-30, usually the lower. I haven't seen the CPU hit 40C yet.
  19. Had the system running a few days now. Awesome performance on HL2/CS-Source and all other apps. Couple of questions: 1. BIOS memory settings and CPU settings haven't been modified, let it auto detect everything. NVmonitor shows HT at 804, shouldn't it be 1000 if this is a 2000 FSB with HT? 2. I have a login sound set. Do the sound drivers not get loaded until login or something? Sound works fine, only the login sound doesn't play. I'm using the latest RealTek drivers from DFI's site.
  20. Just a follow-up. Installed the Fortron Blue Storm 500W PSU, reinstalled the HSF and reapplied the ShinEtsu. Booted up this afternoon - now running a cool 29-30C at idle. WOOHOO!
  21. My fortron blue storm got delivered yesterday. NICE power supply. I love the braided cables and ergo molex connectors. Ordered mine from CircoTech, who was cheaper than the "egg" after shipping. I would spend the little extra for a quality PSU, it will save you headaches in the end. A good power supply is the ground work for a smooth running machine.
  22. Make sure the molex connectors aren't "fan only". They only have two of the four pins connected. Some of the PSU makers are doing that now, not sure if yours is.
  23. I had the same problem with an Abit board I bought before the DFI - it uses the same backplate. With the ThermalTake A1772 HSF I had, it pulled on the ends so hard it put a bend in the backplate, making it push against the chassis. When I ordered the DFI, I also ordered a Venus 12, which doesn't pull as much and seems to work great.
  24. I just ordered my Fortron Blue 500W PSU. I was going to order last night, but figured I'd wait until this morning. When I got up, Newegg was sold out!! I found it at another online retailer, who even called me (yes, on the phone!) to answer a question I had put in the comments section of my order. Should be here within a couple of days.
