  1. This is a great way to get a product out to the computer community. It is great advertisement for these companies. If you find a product that you like, you will look for other software by the developer. Good thread! The link is now one of my "Tabs" to check daily.

    Got Wii?

I am very interested in this topic. As I have posted in other forums, I am in the process of deciding to buy a console. I figure if I have a console for gaming, then I can use Linux as my default OS and have rid of M$ from my life. Is Wii the best console? The reason that I haven't gone that way before is I have more trouble using game pads. I guess growing up with keyboard and mouse has crippled my hand/eye coordination, somewhat. If I can use Linux (Ubuntu 6.10 in particular) as my OS, it will save many dollars and give me everything that Windows has to offer. For those of you who have stayed away from Linux because of gaming, you might be pleasantly surprised by how great it is. There are thousands of programs available and they are all FREE. The thing I like best is you don't have to reboot every time you install a program. Only when there is a complete system update.
  3. Isn't the 1900XT an ATI card? (shrug) If so, you don't want nVidia drivers.
  4. Ed, first I would go into the "Device Manager" and delete the drive. Then, reboot. Windows should recognize the drive and reinstall it. If this happens, at least you know that Windows knows it is there. I would then go to the manufacturer's website and download updated drivers and firmware that are available. Once you have done all of this, if the drive still doesn't work properly, I would suspect the drive. One other thing, are you using DVD (-)R/RW's? They appear to be less compatible with all brands of drives from what I have read. I had problems from time to time, so I checked my CD/DVD's and found that 2/3's of them are (-) R/RW. It appears that these are the ones that you find on sale in most stores. I am now careful to buy (+) R/RW's.
  5. By the time this NEW OS is on the horizon, I will be using Linux exclusively. I will have my console for gaming and Linux as my default OS. Then, as I have said before, M$ will be out of my life for ever and ever. Amen.
  6. I have been doing some thinking -- oh, no, look at the smoke. I am using Ubuntu Edgy Eft 6.10 (Linux) and have been for about two weeks. One everning, when contemplating this exact question (XP vs. Vista), I came to a startling realization. If I were to purchase a console (maybe Wii; not XBOX), I could have my cake and eat it too. The only reason that I have a M$ product is for gaming. With the console, I could play all of the games I like and use Linux on my computer. It would cut M$ out of my life forever! This is still in the contemplating stages, but I am giving it some real thought. Linux has a program that will duplicate any program for M$ and it is FREE! My download speeds are better using Swiftfox (FF2 tweaked for Linux) in Ubuntu, than using FF2 in XP. This old brain always gets me in trouble.
  7. No, you could always do a clean install with the Windows upgrade version. I did it many times. This is simply one more way to assure that I stay with XP as long as it is supported.
  8. Thanks for the offer, Slant. I just might do that when I have some time.
  9. Well, I know it is a bit late, but I finally bought BF2 and BF2 "Special Forces", Deluxe Edition. You know, when I played BF (original), I wasn't impressed because it took too long for me to figure out how to play it. I stuck with it and got through the entire game. Now, I installed BF2 and find, first that it wants me to play online, so when I clicked offline, it disabled my Internet connection. This made me extremely happy, because I had to spend some time to correct it. Next, when I finally got to the game, I was dead before I could even determine what was going on. I am glad that Walmart screwed up and I only paid $19.77 for the game, because I am not sure that I am ready for the learning curve that it apparently will take to play it. I have played FarCry, Splinter Cell (All versions), Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighters, HF2 and Quake 4, without any problems. So, it is not that I can't do it, it simply shouldn't be so hard to learn.
  10. My suggestion is to unplug your IDE drives from the system, since you want to install the OS on this drive. This will do two things: !. It will assure that Windows sets it up as C: and 2. Eliminate the possibiltity of confiicts. I have done this and it worked for me. Also, assure that your SATA is Enabled in the BIOS.
  11. The ability to maintain market share and value these days is nearly impossible. Eventually, you have to make money to continue growth. The speculators stopped speculating!
  12. It sounds to me like you have a conflict. Did you check in the "Device Manager" to see if it shows all of the peripherals are functioning properly? You may want to do a clean install.
  13. Well, I went from Win95 to XP with nothing in between. I don't have the urge to spend money just to be spending it. If XP is here for another 5 year, I'll be using it. By the time XP is not supported, I'll probably be too old for gaming, anyway. Then, I will go to Linux without looking back. I am truly impressed with Ubuntu Edgy Dft 6.10. The apps are still a bit Win 3.1 looking, but work great.
  14. Good, honest read. The kind of sincere talk that comes after the fact. They definitely would not have published this article if they planned to stay in the business of selling PC games. Similar to another honest opinion I once read on this site! I purchase my games at Walmart. My grandsons laugh at me because I am a gamer, first, but also because I don't buy a game until it is under $30; preferably $19.77. I tell them that it is still new to me and the CD/DVD looks the same at that price as it does at $50. They, of course, want the latest greatest. I tell them that when they have to spend their money, they might change their minds.
  15. Our not so small town, 50,000 (24,000 when I moved here in the early 60's), is famous for our Walla Walla Sweet Onions. Also, it is the home of the Washington State Penitentiary. WSP is the home of "The Green River Killer". Last, our area is becoming renown for its "Vino"; known as the Senoma Valley of the Pacific Northwest. We have some of the best wineries in the country. Two-Walla, as we sometimes are called, is on the same parallel as Bordeaux, France. The sandy soil is some of the best in the world for growing grapes.
  16. With the setup that you are using, your PSU is probably functioning okay. However, if you attempt to upgrade components, it will quickly become inadequate. As stated earlier, DFI boards require a minimum of 480W. So, if you have problems, your PSU would be the first candidate for replacement.
  17. I recently broke my RAID 0 setup; XP drive 0, Ubuntu Edgy Eft 6.10 drive 1. I honestly can't see any difference in the speed. There may be in bench-marking, but in day to day use, I see no difference. I guess my eyes are old_geeksters, also.
  18. Sorry for the oversight, "Welcome to the Street"! Your observation is correct. None of the "yellow" slots will allow for boot with one stick of RAM. If you want to boot with one stick, it should be placed in the "orange" slot nearest the top of the board (DDR2). I would suggest that you go to DFI's website and download the "Manual" for your board. It will give you some excellent information about it.
  19. In fact, most on this site don't recommend OC'ing using any software app. The BIOS is the most predictable and reliable method.
  20. Also, clear the CMOS for at least 15 minutes. This may help, also.
  21. I guess I will make it a "Hat Trick" (Like that A_G?). I don't plan to use Vista until I have no other choice. Unless, of course, Uncle Bill decides to give it to me as a gift. I don't think that will happen. I have recently begun to explore Ubuntu Edgy Eft 6.10. It is, in some ways, better than XP. The main way is you can customize it far more easily. There is little that you can't do without a "tweaks guide". I believe that we will soon have the ability to play any game in Linux. They have brought the two top Linux developer groups together into one organization, to assure they can keep pace with M$. They actually plan to surpass them. They say that 80% of computers in use today, have a M$ OS installed. They want to change that statistic. Oh, yes, the best part of Ubuntu (prn. oo-boon-to), it and thousands of apps are FREE!! Most of them equal to or better than, XP.
  22. Well, the "prevailing wisdom" says, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. In other words, flashing a BIOS simply to be flashing it, is not good practice. It is never a sure thing. If you are not looking for a particular fix or upgrade, then stay with yours if it is doing the job; especially if it is newer. With that said, Tmod's CD is the safest way to flash a BIOS. It is not fool-proof, but the next best thing to it. Whenever you flash a BIOS, you should have a backup plan. The best plan is to have a flashed spare BIOS available. Those are also available from Tmod.

    Quake 4 crashing

I had the same problem with my rig and Quake 4. What I found to be my problem was the OC on my video card. Once I reduce the clock speeds, it runs great.
  24. I like Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighters. HL2 is great, but it is the only game that makes me "motion sick" in less than 5 minutes. I don't have any problems with Quake 4, which is what I am playing now. BF2 and BF2: Special Forces is next on my list (Got both at Walmart for $19.77. It was an error on their part; should be $39.97). I recently added Doom 3 to my list of games. I like it as much a Quake 4. However, is it as difficult as I make it to kill the Bosses? I'm tellin' ya, I finally had to stoop to using "God Mode" to beat one of them. I am now battling worst of the worst and may have to use "God Mode" again. I simply can't run and shoot well at all. I get killed before I can even use the Cube on the big guy in hell. I have "Age of Empires III", but haven't been able to get interested in it. I guess I am not a strategy type of guy.
