  3. Hey there, Finally. I'm on lay-off till spring again. What a year to forget .......... I'm looking at using IPCop in building a router to enable VPN and more importantly, "secure' DMZ port(s). I know, I know. I just used "secure' and "DMZ' in the same sentence. But it's the securing/hardening of the DMZ ports that I have the most concern with and hence my asking you kind folks. Anyone here have any thoughts or experiences with IPCop, or any other open-source? pfSense, mOnOwall, etc ? pfSense can run in VMWare which I might consider a bonus as I have the hardware to support a rather heavily loaded machine. Thanks in advance, Rick

DRM free but at what cost?!

Shamefully, communicating with elected officials/representitives doesn't happen with anywhere near the frequency it should. Most pull a lever on voting day and that's that. ___ And not in arguing with Ex, but most voters don't feel organized enough to accomplish these things they believe need changed/altered in calling their Representitives. JUST DO IT! Call your elected officials and voice your opinion(s!) else organized money will continue to dominate over the people.

    good JOKE for ya...

Be aware...be very aware. A "heads up" for you and any friends who may be regular Home Depot customers. Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while out shopping. Simply going out to get supplies has turned out to be quite traumatic. Don't be naive enough to think it couldn't happen to you. Here's how the scam works: Two seriously good-looking 18 or 19-year-old girls come over to your car as you are packing your shopping into the trunk. They both start wiping your windshield down with a rag and Windex, their breasts almost falling out of their skimpy T-shirts. It is impossible not to look. When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say "No" and instead ask you for a ride to another Home Depot. You agree and they get in the back seat. On the way, they start having . with each other. Then one of them climbs over into the front seat and performs oral . on you, while the other one steals your wallet. I have had my wallet stolen November 4th, 9th, and 10th. Twice on the 15th, 17th, 20th, and 28th. Three times just yesterday. And likely again this upcoming weekend or as soon as I can buy some more wallets.

Quadro FX1400 vs GeForce 8800 GTS

I'll jump in here and second uneedav8's sentiments. Two different animals. Spend their limit's for a decent Quadro or FireGL with as much ram as they're willing to afford and pump 'em if there's a decent model directly above the pricing point/limit. Assuming they're using quality monitors to match one of the above cards abilities and they're critical of what they do, they'll thank you for it. Edit: Might even find out what program they do use and check for suppport/compatability betweenst them.

    PCI-E ethernet adapter

Had a Broadcom chip based one and wasn't as impressed as I thought I'd be. Sold it and replaced it with a Syba SD-SA2PEX-2E PCI-e(1x) to E-Sata card in my 150 machine. This card is amazingingly fast for only a 2-port controller. It's damn near as fast as my $260 LaCie 4-port E-Sata PCI-e(8x) card in my 185 at 1/9the the price. Port Multiplier ready using a SiL3132 chip, and RAID5 capable too with a BIOS update. Short answer to are PCI-E NICs worth it; Keep looking.

Problems with SATA II hard drives

Controller is the NF4 chipset, so we can forget about re-soldering it! Command queing? Make any difference unchecked? Was the version if the Hitachi Feature Tool you used v2.06? Did you make any changes using it? If so, what? Let me know and I'll take a peek using the HD's I have here. Oh. One continous partition across the whole drive?

Problems with SATA II hard drives

No need to get uppity with the problem. I'm puzzled why all the fuss with your burst speeds but I'll spend some time here with ya to help where I can. Burst isn't really worth diddly in real life other than to befuddle the bejessus outta those that pay rapt attention to it(burst) soley. Even with better numbers I'd lay ya even money you couldn't feel the difference, let alone time it and see any differences. That some pics posted show a higher burst doesn't mean that there are many many others out there that might be/would see lower, were they to look. Have you run HD Tach on it after moving all the files it contains and re-formatted it from within Windows? Unles your doing heavy I/O on it Command Queing is worthless and even has the ability to hinder a drives performance. As for your pic showing "Enable command queing" checked, try unchecking it and re-testing. I forgot, is it showing up as a SATA-II drive in the controllers property page?

    good JOKE for ya...

Two little boys in first grade were chosen to be the leads in their first school play. It was to be a Shakespearean play. The first little boy was to say, "My fair maiden....I have come to snatch a kiss and fill your soul with hope." The second little boy was to reply by saying, "Hark!, a pistol shot." Well, on opening night in the school auditorium, the two little boys were a bit nervous knowing that all the seats were going to be filled with grown-ups. The teacher told them to take their places on the stage and to remember to speak very loud as soon as the curtain goes up. The curtain rose and looking out upon the audience the two boys were terrified. They stood there frozen. So the teacher whispered for them to begin. The first boy yelled out these unforgettable words..... "My fair maiden....! I have come to kiss your snatch! And fill your hole with soap." The second boy screams out..... "Hark! a shistol pot, a postle shiss, a pot of ., horse ., bull ..... Oh, I never wanted to be in this lousy play anyway... The audience left howling.

  20. Hmmm.... I'm puzzled. There's always a shot at a new BIOS Chip from Tmod here: New Pre-Programmed BIOS Chips. Might be the best ~$20.00 spent. Have you tried The LONG CMOS Clear And I'll ask politely with no ill will(as the pics scraggly) Is the CMOS battery in the proper way? Is the BIOS picking the wrong voltage for the CPU that you find the need to change it?
  21. The minimum build is still IMHO the way to go at this point. PS/2 KB and mouse, outside the case with all 4 MB power connections. No case wiring connected, just a basic "oh please boot' build.
  22. Have you browsed the OCDB here for others running the same CPU/Ram/Mb and or BIOS revision? No personal experiences with FX60TEST but I guess it'd be worth a shot before dropping $$$ for a new CPU.
  23. 2.5v is simply too little for Plat r2's. Try this. Move the one stick to the furthest slot from the CPU, clear the BIOS, and as tasr suggests bump the ram to 2.7, save and reboot. Give that a whirl. And so you're aware, there is an FX-55 ADAFX55DEI5AS(130nm Clawhammer) that runs at 1.5v and an FX-55 ADAFX55DAA5BN(90nm San Diego) that runs at 1.35v/1.4v http://amdcompare.com/us%2Den/desktop/Side...n=ADAFX55DEI5AS
