Saving my RAID-0 on EVGA x58

One of my WD 2500KS drives decided to glitch out and caused a flag to get popped on my RAID manager. Windows 7 no longer boots correctly and constantly starts the boot recovery manager. The RAID utility that flashes up every time I boot up says that the status is Normal and that it is bootable, so I'm thinking just one of the windows files got corrupted that's preventing it from booting. I boot up into my Knoppix 6.2 disc but found it doesn't read the RAID. Should I try reinstalling Windows or is there another way I can possibly see if I can still access the RAID to copy my files that I need off of there. I've been procrastinating reformatting one of my external drives to do a proper backup, any help would be greatly appreciated. EDIT: I guess really what I need is a way to access my array from outside of windows to transfer the files so I can just do a reformat and not have to deal with the corrupted windows files.

    Coulple of 8800GT questions

I figured airflow would be sufficient but I went ahead and put the little pads back on. I'll probably pick up an aftermarket sink for it once I look around some more.

    Coulple of 8800GT questions

Alright, I got my EVGA 8800GT (512-P3-N802-A3) yesterday and immediately ripped off the cooler. I cleaned out all the gunk for the GPU and took the white pads off the arc of chips going around the gpu (I left the ones covering the stuff towards the end of the card, didn't think they were too important). I applied AS5 to all, put everything back together, throw it all in my computer, and then got the clock up to SSC speeds (700/2000). The card sits at 46 idle/59 max load (about 30 minutes of gaming) with the fan at 70%. First question, was removing the pads a bad idea? I hear that it might leave a gap between the cooler and the ram, but my temps seem to be fine. Is there a way to check the ram temps? I was looking in everest and it reports 46 for GPU and 38 for GPU Ambient. Second, is AS5 bad for the graphics card? Some other people are telling me it will fry it. I put very minimum amounts of it on each of the chips. I hear ASmx-1 is the stuff to get because it's non conducive, but I don't want to buy more stuff while I have 1/4 of this left. Third, is unlinking the shader good or bad for overclocking the card (using rivatuner)? Right now I have it linked at the speeds I have now. Thanks for any help.

    Coulple of 8800GT questions

I saved the pads just in case I would ever need them again and they're all in tact. So is there a way to check the ram temps, I knew the gpu temp was only coming from the core. I'll check and see if the chips are making contact with the cooler.
  5. So there's this great deal on 8800GTS' on ZipZoomFly HERE. I'm really anxious to pick up the card, but I noticed the new versions from EVGA are coming with boosted overclocks. I wanted to ask here to see what kind of overclocks people are getting on the older cards compared to the news ones. I would much rather buy the older card and overclock myself if it will do so, preferably on stock cooling. Oh, and if anyone is wondering, this is the 640-P2-N827-AR model.

    Overclocking difference in EVGA 8800's

Sorry, I must have copied the wrong one, I had multiple tabs going when I posted this. I may just be holding out for the next generation of cards. Aren't they supposed to be coming pretty soon here?
  7. I currently have a Optie 165, BFG 7800GT, 2gigs of G.Skill ram, and a DFI mb. I also have a Samsung 204bw widescreen monitor. My question is: If I upgrade to a 8800GTS, will I be getting a large bottleneck on my cpu at a 2.7ghz clock speed? Also, would this card be the most logical graphics card update for this system? How much performance on the graphics card would I be losing compared to a Core 2 system? I plan on buying a new graphics card in about a month or so. New games are eating me at this higher resolution. Thanks in advance.
  8. I know that it is highly recommended to run 1T timings with AMD - meaning 2 DIMMS in dual-channel - whenever possible. But what I want to know is if there is still any overclocking potential while running with 4 DIMMS (4x512). I just don't have the budget right now to go out and buy the $160 2GB dual-channel sets right now and I would like to have that extra gig with all the things I do with my computer. Here is my setup: AMD Opteron 165 w/ Thermaltake BigTyphoon - CCBBE 0615DPMW DFI LanParty SLI-DR G.Skill 4400LE (4x512) - currently being RMA'd BFG 7800GT WD2500KS Silverstone Zeus 650w Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic I know that I could probably hit 2.6 on my optie pretty easily with 2 of the DIMMs in dual channel, and that would make it a pretty decent setup, but I would still be bottlenecked by the ram I think when I play games like Rainbow Six: Vegas, Supreme Commander, Company of Heroes, and BF2 and also when working with Photoshop plus general multitasking. I haven't been able to try this setup yet because I had a dead set of the 4400LE lying around and then recently my other set went out on me so I RMA'd them both and expect them back next week. I just want to see if I can get a heads up from anybody that has tried this.

Limitations with AMD and 2T RAM timings

I read a lot of bandwidth vs. latency arguments and I'm just going to try it for myself. I'll get my max overclock with completely loose timings/better divider and bench it then do the same with relatively tight timings and loose divider. I know the newegg reviews should be taken with a grain of salt, but quite a few people say they've been able to hit 250 with cas2.5 pretty easily. I'm trying not to get my hopes up.

I'm hoping I can get 264 out of it, but that's high hopes.

Limitations with AMD and 2T RAM timings

Nevermind the whole thing. G.Skill received my RAM today and notified that since it was discontinued, they were just going to send me a brand spankin' new 2GB set. All problems solved :D This is the stuff I'm getting now: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16820231032

    New Rig Critique Needed

A friend of mine just did a top-of-the-line build and got a the qx6700, EVGA 680i, EVGA 8800GTX, Corsair Dominator 1066..... the works. We really put that thing to the test, we got his quad core to 3.7 on pretty decent air cooling, so I wouldn't say that the quad core lacks potential in overclock ability, it's all about the experience of the overclocker. The x6800 can certainly go futher than that under the right cooling due to 4 cores just heating up too much. The 680i board is awesome for overclocking in my opinion, I would say on par with the BadAxe2 at least. My friend did have the latest bios and we had no problems at all. It certainly is a great build and you get what you pay for with this setup. You can certainly get the same "happy" factor with a much cheaper build and then overclock to some nice standards. I'll admit, the quad core is a bit over the top at this point in time, but if you really want to harness that sort of power, look no where else. My friend and I are still looking for a way to freeze up that system, it multi-tasks like there's no tomorrow.

    iPod Question

Alright, someone who has an iPod Video 5G can clear something up for me. I need to know if there is supposed to be a "dead" space between the case and the screen. As in, there is some unlit area between the screen area and the black or white case section. I just noticed this little tidbit today and I'm kind of paranoid that it wasn't there before. My iPod is under warranty so I just have to make a call and a new one will be here tomorrow but I want to ask and see if that is an actual problem or not. It doesn't bother me really, I just don't know if it's supposed to be that way or not. I'll take pictures if needed.

    WTB: 2GBs of Overlcockable DDR1

  17. Windows XP Pro would not install with my 4400LE RAM (2x512) so I opted for some Kingston value RAM (2x256) and Windows installed fine. I figured that it was just a temporary issue so I continued with my business and got the rig up again. After getting most things installed, I put the RAM back in and it still won't boot to Windows. Before I installed Windows, I used the Memtest program in BIOS and it ran through the whole loop of tests fine, I think there's 8? But when Windows went to install it's first little things, I get a BSOD with the IRQL error. I have a feeling that the new BIOS is causing the RAM to malfunction in some way and is making it extremely unstable. My rig: Opteron 165 DFI LanParty SLI-DR (non-expert) latest BIOS, brand new chip from RMA WD2500KS Creative X-Fi Xtreme Music SilverStone Zeus 650w Sony DVD/CD combo drive And of course the G.Skill 4400LE I also have 2 sets of the G.Skill RAM. I'm borrowing one from a friend that had it in his last system that worked fine. I've been running things on optimized defaults and setting everything in Genie to Auto.

RAM not working with new BIOS

No dice after re-flashing. However, the RAM will boot into windows occasionally but as soon as I go to do something, it'll crash, which leaves me with: "What do I do now?" I just don't know why the ram wont run under windows, but is 8+ hours stable in memtest. Is g.skill still in business and do they still offer Tech Support/RMAs? I thought they have a lifetime warranty on their ram, but I could be wrong. I'm going to look around and see what I can do as far as getting replacements or whatever. Thanks for everyone's help so far.

RAM not working with new BIOS

I'll try re-flashing. It's strange because I got this chip straight from DFI with the latest BIOS. I've already tried everything else in your post. When I ran Memtest overnight, both sticks ran through 24 times (all 8 tests) without errors. I'll post back here when I do the flash tomorrow.

RAM not working with new BIOS

I've been trying to get them to work at their lowest rated (loose) timings, 3-4-4-8 1T at 200mhz 2.7v. I feel like I'm repeating myself here, the ram has been used in the orange slots for a long time with my older system (3200 Venice, same mobo with older bios, and ram) which I overclocked without problems and I don't know why this new BIOS seems to be screwing with the sticks so much. I was able to run Memtest overnight and have them stable with no errors last night, but then I go to boot Windows and they don't work anymore. I'm really thinking that I'm setting up the timings wrong or something. If someone could give me some reference timings for this ram, just in case I'm doing something wrong, that would be great. I'll update this in a bit with the whole list in Genie settings in a few minutes unless I can get it to work. ***UPDATE*** Tried the ram in yellow slots after having no more luck. Still does not work in yellow slots despite running through Memtest flawlessly. In either orientation, the system reboots after showing the Windows loading screen. Checked my temps, they were fine. Here is a full list of the timings and stuff I'm using: Genie BIOS Settings: FSB Bus Frequency............................. - 200 LDT/FSB Frequency Ratio....................... - 4 CPU/FSB Frequency Ratio....................... - 9 PCI eXpress Frequency......................... - 100MHZ CPU VID StartUp Value......................... - Auto CPU VID Control............................... - Auto CPU VID Special Control....................... - Auto LDT Voltage Control........................... - 1.30v Chip Set Voltage Control...................... - 1.60v DRAM Voltage Control.......................... - 2.70v DRAM Configuration Settings: DRAM Frequency Set............................ - 200=RAM/FSB:01/01 Command Per Clock (CPC)....................... - Enable CAS Latency Control (Tcl)..................... - 3 RAS# to CAS# delay (Trcd)..................... - 4 Min RAS# active time (Tras)................... - 8 Row precharge time (Trp)...................... - 4 Row Cycle time (Trc).......................... - 7 Bus Clocks Row refresh cyc time (Trfc)................... - 15 Bus Clocks Row to Row delay (Trrd)....................... - 02 Bus Clocks Write recovery time (Twr)..................... - 02 Bus Clocks Write to Read delay (Twtr).................... - 02 Bus Clocks Read to Write delay (Trwt).................... - 03 Bus Clocks Refresh Period (Tref)......................... - 3120 Cycles DRAM Bank Interleave.......................... - Enabled DQS Skew Control.............................. - Auto DQS Skew Value................................ - 0 DRAM Drive Strength........................... - Auto DRAM Data Drive Strength...................... - Auto Max Async Latency............................. - Auto DRAM Response Time............................ - fast Read Preamble Time............................ - 5 IdleCycle Limit............................... - 256 Cycles Dynamic Counter............................... - Disabled R/W Queue Bypass.............................. - 16 x Bypass Max.................................... - 07 x 32 Byte Granularity........................... - Disable(4 Bursts) Another quick question. RAM not working with new BIOS

The ram is in the orange slots. This RAM worked before I put an optie in with a new BIOS chip, that's why I'm asking here. Sometimes it will boot with one dimm in the top orange slot (DIMM2). Like I said, using the Kingston ram works fine. Also, I put the g.skill ram in a gigabyte mobo and it booted fine.

    Unlocking "Access Denied" folders

I recently had Windows go corrupt when my rig went bad, but I would like to salvage as many of my files as I can. Unfortunately, I had my account protected with a password. So when I go to drag my files onto another computer, I get the "access denied" message and I can't get into my files. I know there is a workaround that allows you to change folder permissions somewhere, but I haven't used that trick in a long time. I'm hoping some of you guys can help me out. Thanks.

    Unlocking "Access Denied" folders

I had to go into safe mode to do it. For some reason it wouldn't allow me to copy over the files in normal mode, so I had to do it in Safe Mode. At least it's working. Thanks.

    what the heck BFG

    what the heck BFG

I am beyond pissed right now. This is just freakin' ridiculous. Here is my story: December 25th: My computer is getting random reboots and BSOD. Eventually, there is no screen coming up despite everything powering up. At this point, there is no POST and corresponding *beeps*. I look at my monitor and it is displaying "No signal. Check PC connection." I was like, "Oh, that's great. Dead graphics card on Christmas." I thought this was odd, because I've only had this graphics card (7800GT) for a little over a year. I double check everything in my computer for connections/dead components. Unplug everything and plug it back in. Nothing. Since it was Christmas, I wasn't going to bother calling tech support. I was going to wait until tomorrow. December 26th: I call up BFG Tech support in the afternoon, I get on a wait list telling me, "Your estimated wait time is 0 minutes." I wait for about 15 and get the message again. I said screw it and waited until the next day. December 27th: See above. I'm kinda mad about this now. I have family over until the New Year so I don't bother calling them again until the 1st. January 1st: I call and finally someone picks up on the tech support line. I tell them my problem and they tell me, "Sounds like the card is dead, let's set up an RMA." It goes smoothly. They tell me all the info I need and since I was a busy guy with getting back to school and all, I don't have a chance to send it in until Friday. January 11th: I call to check on the status of my RMA. They tell me they got my card on the 10th and shipped a "replacement" out the same day. I thought to myself, "Wow, that's a pretty quick turn around." I wasn't sure how their RMA department worked, so it seemed weird for me at the time. The guy on the phone tells me I'll have my card on the 16th, a Tuesday (due to the holiday). January 16th: I get my card from UPS (ugh) and frantically open the box and look at the card. It wasn't a new card, it wasn't my old "fixed" card (checked serial), it was a card that looked like it had a fair amount of damage/work done on it. Soldering done in a few places and a capacitor or whatever replaced on it. I was shocked, to be honest. I thought they would have just given me a new card. I hesitantly put the card in my nice clean computer case with a new spiffy wiring job (gotta do something while I'm without my computer), plug it in, push the power button and BAM, no signal. They had shipped me a broken card. I immediately call tech support and tell them about my experience and they revert me to a higher level of tech support to troubleshoot the problem. NOTE: Now I'm not an idiot, I've tried just about everything: different monitor, different cables, power cord organizations, etc. to no avail. But I decide to go along with their system and have a techie diagnose my computer. I tell him about my setup, my custom rig. He's asking about my power supply a lot and I answer all his questions speedily. I go over the problem probably twice and tell him everything that I've tried. He deems the card a dud and sends me back to the same RMA person to set up another RMA. This time she offers and "Advance RMA," (I know what it was, the quotes are for emphasis). I was wondering why they hadn't offered this to me the first time. This of course is a lot faster, or it should have been anyway. They email me a free shipping label. I'm asking myself again, why did I have to pay to ship the first one? Right before the lady setting up my RMA is about to hang up, I ask her, "Don't you need a credit card number or something." She repeatedly assures me that she doesn't need one since they are giving me a shipping label to ship the card back. Again, I'm a busy student, so I don't get the card out until that Friday, the 19th. January 22nd: I get a call at about 3pm from BFG with a woman telling me that they want a credit card number from me so they can ship the card to me with the "advance RMA." This is a giant what the heck in my book. It takes them a whole WEEK to call me and decide they want a credit card number so they can ship the card to me. I tell the lady that I had already shipped the other card back (I was kind of hoping that I could use the box from the advance RMA to ship my card back, I'm running out of boxes). She's like, "Oh yeah, we have it on file that your card is already shipped out to us so we shouldn't need your credit card information anymore." (DOUBLE what the heck). She tells me that she is going to check with the warehouse or shipping department or whatever to make sure that counts as authorization so that they can ship me my "advance RMA" and have it to me ASAP. I note my frustration in this issue because my card should have been here last week, being an "Advance RMA" and all. I tell her that I'll just give her a credit card number just in case it wasn't going to work. I give her the info and she tells me that she'll call back later today if there is any issues. She does not call back so I assume that everything went fine and that my card will be shipped out the next day, Tuesday the 23rd, and be here by Thursday the 25th. They seem to use 2 day express shipping from UPS and they normally get to my house in 2 days. January 25th: Not only has it been one whole month since my computer crashed, but I STILL do not have my card back. I stay calm and allow UPS one more day to get the card to my house. 1/12th of my year has been wasted. I've been surviving off of Warcraft 3 at home on older Dell computers and doing schoolwork on school computers during the 1 hour "break" I've alloted myself between my classes. Today, January 26th: I get home from college expecting a package to be at my door. Guess what, it wasn't there. I rush inside and immediately call BFG again and get into the RMA department, almost shouting at the lady with disappointment. She looks up my RMA and asks me.......wait for it......"Did we collect credit card information for your advance RMA?" .................. I swear, I almost blew up right there. I told the lady that I had talked with someone earlier in the week and they claimed they were going to ship the card out on Tuesday. I told her that it shouldn't matter because I shipped my card out a week ago and they should already have it. She the replied, "I see that we received that card yesterday." I asked her why they would need any sort of credit card or anything now because the whole idea of an "advance RMA" has been thrown out the window as it has been a week an a half since I had been given one in the first place. She was puzzled as to why my card had not been shipped out earlier that week, but apparently there were no records of anything. The only consolation she could provide was overnight shipping. I'd almost expect a free upgrade at this point in time. At this point, a serious apology would be nice really. This is all I can do to vent at this point in time apart from causing physical harm to objects in my vicinity. There honestly must be a giant question mark imprinted on the heads of everyone working in tech support. They cannot make any links between anything. There is clearly a lack of documentation or communication. Common sense is not aplenty here. The ignorance and lack of customer service is driving me to my limits here. I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm flaming, but I'm sure you can understand my situation. I've been signed up to go to PDXLAN9 since last September and I don't have a computer to go with as of right now. UPDATE: January 27th: It's about noon here and I'm wondering if BFG had in fact overnighted the package to me yesterday. I decide to call UPS and talk to someone about how their overnight system works. I eventually get to a guy who tells me that someone from BFG in Illinois would have until 8:00 pm yesterday to get the package out in order for it to be at my house by the next day (today). I called BFG yesterday at about 12:30 pm (which is 2:30 in Lake Forest) and the conversation was over before 1 pm (3:00). I think that's a reasonable amount of time to sort things out and get my package out "ASAP." Considering the lady was so inclined to "personally handle this problem," I felt somewhat assured in her determination. Man was I wrong, just like I was wrong 2 times before. I call BFG and get into the RMA department, as I've become accustomed to doing for the past month, and my call is quickly answered by another differently lady, Mary. First thing she says to me is this (you probably saw this coming by now), "Have you provided us with credit card information yet?" By now, you would think that one of the other 2 people I've talked to would clear that from my records as they said they would, as it's been brought up each time and I've told them that should have already been taken care of. Next, I inquire about the overnight package that was supposed to be sent out yesterday. I'm informed that "it doesn't look like that was shipped out." She also informs me that the warehouse isn't open on Saturdays/Sundays and that there was nothing else she could do for me today. I just ask for a manager/supervisor, obviously this line of support can't do anything for me beyond repeating info on my file. I get to the supervisor, Paul, after a couple minutes of waiting on hold and just so that we're on the same page, I repeat my whole story to him. After my little chat, he claims the whole screw up was with the first lady that set up my "Advance RMA" and that since she didn't collect credit card information the first time, she screwed up the whole system of the "Advance RMA." He tells me that this person has been "dealt with" about the situation (which I doubt). Striiiiike One! Next, he notes that on the following Monday when the lady called and took my credit card info (after I had shipped my card back the Friday before) the lady just "assumed" the tracking number for my package would hold as authorization and never actually did anything. Great, now she has my credit card information that never actually went into BFG's accounts. Striiiiike Two! Then he tells me that yesterday (Friday), the lady never actually took any steps to getting the package overnighted to me and that there was no note on my account that said it was overnighted/shipped/dealt with at all. Striiiike Three, you're out! He immediately backs himself up that it "could have been shipped, I don't know." He tells me that his plan is to contact with the warehouse supervisor himself (through email, he says, apparently he can't call them) and that this whole situation should be solved by the time I talk to him on Monday. So that means another weekend of no practicing for PDXLAN. This is the ironic part, I want to be able to practice for a tournement (CoH) in which I can win...... A BFG GRAPHICS CARD!!!
