    The saga continues

Said problem hasn't occured since putting the stock hs back i'll just have to wait and see. (i'm still hoping that it was some short causing the problem) As per the Zalman I did tighten the screws all the way mighty stupid of me I know but i thought that a tighter fit would result in better cooling. And thanks for the pic jammin

    The saga continues

It must be either my luck or something I do but ever since i've built my first computer i've had video card problems. It would be nice to have other hardware problems for a change but alasm it is not so. The latest adition to my rig is no exception exception to this rule. My brand new Sapphire x1650 (600 mhz core, 1400 mhz ddr3) runs games pretty well except that it has a nasty habit of randomly corupting my screen with artifacts. And I don't mean a couple of artifacts I mean a screen full of artifacts. So far this has happened to me about 10 times in 20 or so hours of gaming with the last 5 incidents happening in a space of less than one hour. I'll keep my camera close so I can take a picture of the screen when this happens again. Also I cannot read the GPU temperature: the sensor reads 0 centigrade permanently. Now my question is: what is causing this problem? 1. Driver problems. Thought of that but switching to omega drivers didn't help. 2. Bad video card. Please let it not be so!!! 3. Video card overheating. I have a zalman vf 900 and therlmaltake copper ramsinks installed so this seems unlikely unless: 4. When i installed the cooler I noticed that some of the fins were very, very close to one of those cilinders on the board (tranzistors, capacitors whatever). This worried me to some extent but since my video card didn't short out instantly I figured it was ok. Could this be the cause of my problems?

    The saga continues

I stripped the zalman off and installed the stock hs. I took a couple of pics of the gpu and i really don't like what i saw. Could someone who REALLY knows his/her way around video cards take a look at the attached picture and tell me its not what I think it is: heat damage. Please? PLEASEEEEEEE (i'm uploading the pic via the forum in built upload feature, if this doesn't work tell me and i'll use imagedump instead) In the meantime i'll be running ati tools to scan for artifacts.

I Didn't Upgrade My Agp Card

You're quite right unforgivin, so say people around other forums (i don't mean to offend occ but i had to ask around). Sinking all that money in my rig is useless, is should upgrade as soon as possible. Better start saving those pennies...Yet until my rig is replaced i still need something to keep me going or a couple of more months. Furthermore, since it's x-mas i've been thinking of getting my little brother a little something like a new video card. Here are my brother's specs: AMD Sepron 2600+ overclocked to 2+Ghz (he got an thermalright XP-92 as an present from me a couple of years ago) el cheapo motherboard 512 Mb ram Asus 128 MB Fx5700 I'm thinking of getting two x1650's at 120$ each http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814161033 But if you guys were able to find two x850 pro or x800 gto's that fit in the 130$ price range i'll go for those. I have to make a decision today. It's either pick a card now or wait for six more months
  5. A couple of months ago I popped out on this forum asking which of the following agp cards yould be best: x1600, x1650 Pro PL, 7600 GS or x800gto. At the time these were my only upgrade options. I was set on getting the x1650 but had to put a hold on my plans due to financial problems (actually some stupid bank clerck mispelled my name and address and I couldn't my scholarship for 2 months). Anyway now I can afford the following video cards and, with money in hand, shall purchase one of these by Cristmas: BFG 7800 GS, a proven design that is sure to offer a great gaming experience. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814143046 - 205$ Sapphire x1950 Pro. This shows great promise but it is still to be proven in combat (gaming). The software bundle is tempting, so are all those cables and accesories. http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetai...ductCode=326860 -250$ The x1950 will only be available from 21/12/2006 and costs 45$ more than the 7800GS so i'm having a hard time picking one card over the other. The two cards are seem closely matched after all that a 25% price difference isn't justified (ati x1950 256 MB PCI vs 7800GS 512 MB using tomshardware interactive VGA charts). Yet, for all that, i've been dying to try ATI for a while and unless you guys say otherwise i'll prolly get the x1950.

I Didn't Upgrade My Agp Card

quite unfortunate, i need to make a decision asap. does anyone know when the x1950 will become available? sapphire says 21/12/2006 but when will newegg start selling the board?
  7. This is not a duplicate thread. I know there are a lot of AGP upgrade threads out there but mine is about choosing a particular graphics card that will go well with MY system specs. I will provide a list of video cards available to me and let you choose the best one. I am also interested in getting the most bang for my buck, so to speak, so be carefull not to recomend a video card that offers only marginal performance but at hgher cost. I am looking to spend 100-200 $, although 150 $ would be optimal. That is how much i currently have at my disposal. I could spend up to 250 $ but that is as far as i'm willing to go. Furthermore I would have to save some more money to buy a 250$ video card. If you can recomend a better card then those I have found please do so but remember these factors: 1. Local prices are about 15% higher then on newegg. 2. I might not be able to locate that particular video card. 3. I am looking for advice on the video cards listed below, yet I am open to suggestions. Please do not swamp me with a list of video cards unavalable to me. 4. Remember that I am on a buget. The x1950 might be a great card but I can't afford it. I'll leave this post incomplete for now. Please do not reply until I post my list of available video cards. Part 2: My list. I will base all my asumptions on graphics card performance on the interactive video card chart to be found at http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics.htm...0&chart=231 Ati cards: I am somewhat dissapointed by the performance offered by AGP ATI cards in this price range, at least when compared to nVidia cards. x1600 cards just don't match up to nVidia 7600 GS. At least in theory. In practice I am still to witness a 7600GS in action but I am still flubergasted by an x1400's performance (or at least rendering quality). At the moment I have been able to locate the following ATI AGP video cards: Saphire x1600pro: 512 mb version http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814102038 it will cost me 144$ 256 MB version http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814102038 it will cost me 130$ Although recomended as an excellent video card as of yet I have been unable to locate a AGP x850. Although nVidia graphics cards in this price range score more in benchmarks than ATI image quality is still a concern for me. FPS is important but so is picture quality. Yet there are more nVidia AGP models available on the market: 7600 GS series: it will cost me 140$ Leadtek http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814102038 XFX http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814122011 retailing at 140$, to me it seems weaker than the Leadtek 7600 (I think I might have mixed up the XFX and Leadtek links) the following cards are available in a store 300 miles from where I live so I wouldn't buy them unless they offer a significant boost in performance. BGF Tech: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814143069 this video card retails at ~180$ Gainward: Gainward BLISS 7600GS AGP 256 DT same price as Leadtek 7600GS Gainward BLISS 7600GT AGP costing ~220$ The 7600GT is the top of the line for me and is unavailable in my home town/city/whatever. I was unable to find any gainward graphics cards on newegg. There is another alternative to the Gainward 7600GT in the form of a Leatdek 7600GT, available in a store near me retailing at ~240$. I was unable to find this video card on newegg but the gpu/gdrm frequency are the same in both the Gainward and Leadtek. This is about it for now.

    Best Choice Agp Graphics Card

Unfortunately it doesn't seem I'll be able to get the 7600GT. dang. My rig needs a new PSU (I had to remove all my PCI cards in order for it to boot properly) dang!! I'll have to narrow down my video card list to just 3. All the following cards have 256 MB GDDRAM and are similarely priced: Leadtek, Gainward or Asus 7600 GS 128 bit Edit: Asus N7600GS-HTD-256M http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814121020 (this kinda sucks now that I think of it) Leadtek WinFast A7600 GS TDH 400 Mhz Gpu, 700 Mhz GDDR2 but comes with decent cooling and a very tempting game bundle. Same price as x1650 Pro Platinum Gainward VGWA76GS BLISS 7600GS AGP 256 DT, GF7600GS AGP, 256 MB GDDR2 2.8ns, 800 MHz, 128bit, DVI costs 10$ less than the Leadtek but has no bundle and the cooler looks kinda underpowered HIS x1650 Pro Platinum 128 bit 600 Mhz Gpu, 800 Mhz GDDR2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814121020 The fan looks uber cool but I am kinda worried by al those install problems. Daytona x800 Gto 256 bit, GDDR3 - all other specs unknown. I dunno about the x800 Gto but I think the x1650 will blow the 7600 GS out of the water 9not to mention the mithical ATI superior picture quality). Please advise. Out of these the Daytona 800 Gto is the most expensive with the Asus 7600 GS being the cheapest but by only ~20$.

My Quote Is Out Of Date

The first thing I ever noticed about Windows Vista is that Microsoft removed the "it is normal for your screen to go blank and for your computer to restart itself several times" message from the install screen. This particular message has been with us Windows users ever since, the beginning of Windows. Now it's gone. So sad. What's more I can no longer claim my quote to be accurate so should I remove it?

    Forms Question

I'm building a forms application that in addition to handling user input events needs to process specific information from forms controls. Atm i'm trying to find a way of getting numerical data (int) from a textbox control, performing some operations on it and then displaying the results in another textbox. The problem is that I don't know how to retrieve the data from the first control. Also I would like to limit the data tipe to numbers and have whatever input function I use return integer values not text (ex value 222 not "222"). I've looked in MSDN but none of teh examples i've been able to find covers this most basic of operations. oops i'm using Microsoft Visual Studio 8.0 with c#.

Trust me it's there. Do a windows reinstall if you don't believe me. The message is shown when the actual instalation begins.

    Best Choice Agp Graphics Card

The prices listed above in $ do not have VAT included, so given teh euro/usd exchange rate they are closer to euro than usd. The 7600GT's cost ~190 euro.

    Best Choice Agp Graphics Card

My AGP card will mostly see action in M2TW (Medieval 2 Total War) so any graphics card that is able to run th game on high would do. The x850 looks like a good upgrade, even more so due to the flashing option but given that i'm still unable to locate an x850 is think i'll go with either the 7600GS or 7600GT.

    2 Gb Of Ddr2

Ah german only site, I could get around to look at some components but there's no way in hell i'll be able to order from that site. thanks anyway
  15. I was just thinking that given the memory hog that vista is likely to be, and the ever more memory intensive applications (thinking mostly of games here) new systems should be built with a standard 2GB of RAM in order to ensure optimal performance. Or is this just overkill? I curently have 1 GB and although I do not suffer from RAM shortages with Windows XP I frequently find myself with less than 100MB of free RAM. While running Vista RC1 I frequently run out of RAM. Actually I think i've just answered my own question but i would still like to hear from the experts as 2 GB of RAM is a big investment, one I would not be ready to make unless necesarry, even more so given that I plan to buy low latency ram (GEIL or whatever) which costs 50% more here than the regular one. Also, if i were to buy a 2x512 DUAL CHANNEL DDR2 GEIL KIT and a kingmax 1GB DDR2 stick how will that affect performance? And to complete my post. I plan to go for a E6400 or E6600 but these run at 1066 Mhz. 1066 Mhz RAM is available but is vastly overpriced. If I buy GEIL RAM DDR2 @ 800 Mhz will I be able to run it at 1066? If so what performance increase can I expect?

    ATi vs. nVidia

As an avid TW gamer I must say that the best way around this particular problem is to not use flaming arows at all. Flaming arrows are woefully ineficient against all but the lightest infantry, they somewhat efective in scaring elefants and chariots (in RTR and SPQR) but should be used in this role only when more specialised toops (aka skirmishers) are unavailable. Sorry for being OT but i was scanning this thread in order to help decide on my "new" AGP graphics card and I couldn't help myself. Lucky for you no-one said the "B" word or this post would never end.

Oh my GOD! That OCZ 2GB kit is 3 times cheaper than anything I can get out here. newegg is so cheap!!!! too bad they don't deliver in europe. do you, by any chance know of a european retailer with prices similar to newegg?

    Best Agp Video Card

How does the x850 xt pe match up to an x1600pro? or a x1600pro to a 7600GS? I plan to upgrade my gpu, here's a list of video cards available to me. I would apreciate any input on which of the video cards listed below delivers the best performance/cost. the 7600 GS http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814122011 it will cost me 140$ the x1600 pro 512 mb version http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814102038 it will cost me 154$ I think the extra 256 MB of GDRAM will provide limited extra performance so perhaps the 256 MB version will do http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814102038 it will cost me 130$ I have yet to locate a x850 xt but I have found a daytona x800gto retailing at 150 $. Is this a better buy than the above? i have also found this 7600GS http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814102038 retailing at 150$, to me it seems weaker than the Leadtek 7600

    Screen Blackout

Lately it has become somewhat of a habbit for my screen to go blank when exiting applications such as computer games or even when exiting the winamp random intelligent visualization wizard (no this is not a winamp commercial). the screen goes blank but the mouse pointer is still visible and i am able to move it. i can still hear stuff like music playing but have no control over my desktop. the only thing i can do in this situation is to reboot as all my input is ignored. this usually only happens when i exit an application but the game medieval 2 total war jams up after a couple of seconds on the campaign map and after displaying the same frame for a couple of seconds i get the same blank screen but this time without any sound or mouse pointer. there is an blinking cursor in the top left corner of the screen though. i have no clue as to what may have caused this problem so please offer sugestions ppl on how to solve this. and yes my screen also goes blank while loading in some games but when the loading is complete i regain control over my desktop. one other thing i've noticed and never cared about until now is that whenever i enter sturmovik or pacific fighter the said mouse pointer is frozen but i can still use my keyboard alt-tab and then alt-tab or click again on the application icon to get back in the game. afterwards the game ctd's and my desktop is left with the game's resolution. only then can i enter and play teh game. i think that this is a problem specific to those flight sim games as it precedes my current screen blackout problems

    Network Security

First of all. I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section/forum. Second. I don't know what got into me but i chose to do this presentation on Network Security for my english class. I could have chosen any other subject but i chose this one because i while i knew something about everything else my knowledge of network security was lacking at best. That was to weeks ago. Now I seem to know a lot more about network security but can't seem to boil all of it down to a 10 minute presentation, i've wasted much of today trying to do so with no avail and the deadline is fast aproaching. I've tried using the info provided here http://www.watchguard.com/press/security_basics.asp but even that is too much. Could any of you like help me out here? Network admins I know you're out there. What could you tell a bunch of computer geeks ignorant of network security if you had just 10 minutes to do so? btw my presentation is due on monday so if you haven't replied by then don't bother.
  24. Before anyone starts pointing the finger at me and laugh while crying out loud: "What a duffus" let me explain the origins of this poll. Like i said this is personal. Some guy at college, pretty new to computers btw, was wondering why on god's green earth his brand new 80 GB hardrive only had 75GB of usable hard disk space. I started to explain that the 5 GB is taken up by the file partition table but then this jerk cut me off. He proceded to my knowledge of computer and even worse myself. The dude refused to listen to reason and even got his big brother (oh look a senior i'm frigthened now) to come along and tell me how stupid i was. I did not have eny evidence on me to prove them wrong. With your help i shall ammend this and prove this guy and his brother wrong. Please occ members help me in this crusade. Just voting here would do but if you can post links to resources on this matter that would be even better. Vengence shall be mine. Btw the guy doesn't even own a computer, but he's a textbook case of 'knowitallism". If he hadn't insulted me and pulled that stunt with his brother i would have probably ignored this whole incident. Mars Ultor heathe my call. Avenge ME.

how about space that is used for system structures under NTFS, does that amount to much? does the file system itself take up space?
