  1. I am a little late to the game, but I use: NETGEAR Nighthawk Smart WiFi Router (R6700) - AC1750 it looks like it is about $90 on Amazon.

A little background on my home network:
I run a plex server off my desktop - at any given time I usually have 2-3 people streaming tv shows or movies from my plex server.
I also run my TV service strictly from the internet (Hulu TV) and when I am home my TV is usually on and something is playing in the background even if I am not watching it.

I do not have any issues with streaming - My Desktop w/ plex is Wired - My TV streaming Hulu is also wired.
The other devices on the network, however, are all wireless.

So I think if you went with this router and wired up some of your main devices aka the device that people are pulling streams from I think you will be fine.

I also think if you are willing to spend a bit more cash - any of the Netgear Nighthawk routers would be a really good choice.
I would make sure the first thing you do though when getting a new router is to upgrade the firmware. There were a lot of fixes between this year and last in almost all routers.

I actually bought the memory from this seller. Had 4 sets. I bought one. Works well if you need 16GB of 2133

    Thank you!
Maybe I will just grab another 16GB of memory and just run it with my current 16.
I was wanting to get 32GB of the same brand, but at this point, I don't think it really matters.
I should figure out the voltage on my current ram to make sure I don't run into any issues there anyways.

  3. I was wondering if anyone had some DDR3 RAM laying around they are not using?

My machine is getting old but still does what I need it to do. I am just in need of upgrading my ram from 16GB to 32GB to run some VM's and what not.
24GB would actually work as well.
I was looking at Newegg and I just cannot bring myself to pay what they are asking for this older RAM.

  4. Got it figured out - I was looking at the IIS logs again and I think there is bad code somewhere.
I was noticing every other request was a 301 request and it was the link was missing a "/". The 200 OK requests had the "/"

So everyone was being directed to a site that didn't exist but it was set up to redirect to the link with the "/" at the end which connected the user.

I think the internet, in general, should auto do this, so I believe there is something in the code we are using that is messed up.

If any of you are doing stuff like this I found a great program to use is called Fiddler it is freeware by a company called Telerik.
You need to make sure you enable Secure hyperlinks through to find stuff like this.

  5. Hey everyone,

So I found myself doing some entry-level sysadmin stuff at my new job.

I am currently on the struggle bus. The company I work for uses a service called Pingdom to reach out to our servers every now and then to see if they are up and running.

When it thinks they are not I will receive a text message telling me about this and that I should look into it.

Well every now and then a few of the servers are unreachable and I am probably just chasing my tail because I know this is bound to happen, but I would like to know what might be going on and why these issues are happening, but I don't really know where to begin.

I started looking at the IIS logs and I can see the Pingdom requests in the log files for the times that Pingdom is sending me a text saying the server was unreachable.

I am getting a couple errors back from Pingdom that say either HTTP Error 503 or 301 Moved Permenately.

I would kind of like to track down the reason why if possible and see if there is a change I can make to have this occur less often. The servers/sites are of course not really down because a minute later I will get another text stating the servers are back online.

If you have any ideas of where I could start that would be sweet.

    Thanks, ya'll!

  6. I was wondering if anyone had this case?

I need to my computer from under this desk and the only other real option would be a wall mounted solution.

I really like the P3 and it has pretty good reviews, but the dimensions on the website seem super weird to me.

    20inch (Height) x 13inch (Wide) x 18.5inch (Length)

    I can fit the 20H x 18.5L

but the 13W is what is confusing me. Most all of my computer cases are between 8-9inches wide. This thing is an extra 4 inches wide and I cannot fit this where I was hoping to.

I was wondering if anyone could confirm this for me?

Does anyone know of any other wall mounted cases that look nice?

I was probably going to upgrade the CPU cooler to a TT AIO 2 fan Rad system as well probably RGB since it will be on display.

    Thanks!

  7. That's a solid build, I wouldn't change or add anything.

Sounds like a fun week,.. are you going with All-Grain or Extract.    http://beersmithrecipes.com/

    Thanks!

We will likely be doing All-Grain since his setup allows for us to do that now.

In the past we were doing mostly extract builds.

It is sort of up in the air right now, but we are looking at a Russian Imperial Stout.

I'd have to recommend the Samsung pro 960. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147596

Max Sequential ReadUp to 3500 MBps

Max Sequential WriteUp to 2100 MBps

1.5 million hour life time and 512mb cache

Pretty sure it's killing the competition right now.

Edit: and I said twice as fast, but looking at these specs alone, it's 5-7 times faster than the fastest sata3 ssd ! haha

I didn't realize that the link wouldn't change if I changed my build.

I updated my build link. I do have the Samsung 950 Pro M.2 now.

I think I will end up being really happy with that! Thank you!

  8. Oh Nice!
I never even gave thought to the M.2 drive.. That is actually a super idea.

I would probably just go with the 1 drive then.

Ultimately the only games I am playing are Xenoverse 2, WoW - Legion, Starcraft 2, Diablo 3.

All of that plus the OS and other things fit nicely on the 512GB drive.

  9. Hey Ya'll!

I am looking at building a new desktop semi gaming PC in December.

I am calling it my Christmas Bender Build due to the fact I am driving to NY in early Dec. and staying in Syracuse for a little over a week with a buddy of mine.

We are pretty much going to drink beer, make beer and make food the entire week.  We are both also planning on building new PC's.

I have spent a couple weeks building and adding parts to my PCPartPicker page.

I think I got it about where I want it. Feel free to take a look at the Link:

    http://pcpartpicker.com/list/skfYWX

I did not add a PSU. I currently have a new PSU: Corsair RM or RX 850 something like that.

I am likely going to get Windows 10 H USB if I have to buy it. If I can get it free through College then I will go that route.

The 3 Green Fans.. 1x Rear 2x Top for the case in the build. I am planning on getting 3 of the 120MM Corsair SP fancy fans with the RGB mode for the front.

    http://www.corsair.com/en-us/sp120-rgb-led-high-performance-120mm-fan-three-pack-with-controller

I went with the 2x Samsung 850 EVO SSD's. I was planning on running them in a Raid 0.

    Samsung 950 Pro M.2

    What am I looking for?

I am just tossing it out here for opinions. Any ways to make it cheaper?

I was considering going to the i5-6600K since I think gaming performance wise it's not really that far away from the i7-6700K. I think some people say it is not worth the extra $100 but some other people are like the extra $100 is just a drop in a bucket for sorta future proofing.

I was originally going with the MSI Nvidia 1080 Gaming X8 but since I am not running 4K and probably wont for a few years. I decided to save around $200 and stick with the 1070.

What are your thoughts and opinions on the build? What could I do better?

  10. Ah, damn. I was on the road when the Perseids were going on, but it was a little too early for them to really hit their stride. Did see a few, which was pretty sweet.

I'm lucky to live in an area that's more dark than anything else at night. I can still see the night sky pretty well in town, and if I go just a few miles north, even more is visible.

You always tell me this and I am very jealous. I need to head down that way and we need to hang out then do photos at night lol!

Chuck my wife says when we meet up you need to show her how to take pictures like that. I just showed her this pics and she's way jelly!

Yeah? Sounds like a plan. It is actually fairly easy to do. The hardest part is getting the correct focus and setting the correct ISO.

I can see the Milky Way from my porch.

You, sir, are one lucky dog. I have to drive over and hour just to see it faintly.

  11. Looks pretty good! Never seen an aurora in person before, so still hoping to at some point. You happen to catch any of the Perseids the other night?

I was sadly at work the night the Perseids were going in full stride.

The aurora is really amazing to see and I would give anything to actually be up north farther to see it in full bloom all around me.

Thanks everyone for the kind words! I am very happy with these.

Yeah, it is really sad the amount of light pollution in most of our hometowns.

I think each state should have a dark sky preserve. I feel that the wonder of space is lost due to the fact no one can really see the stars anymore.

  12. I had some downtime Saturday so my brother and I drove to Cass City, MI which is about an hour and half from me.

I have been trying to get a photograph of the Milky Way for about 2 summers now. Every time I head up north I always get rained out or I am dumb and I go on a day there is a full moon.

Well, Saturday I got super lucky. I saw the Milky Way for the first time and I captured it! I also went to shoot a star trail photo using the north star as my focus. When I looked at my live view of the photo I saw green on the horizon. I yelled at my brother to come look at the photo, and sure enough the aurora was in full bloom.

Here are two of my favorite shots I took and you can view some of the others on my Flickr Account if you are interested. I also have a 14 second time-lapse of the aurora which I thought looked pretty spiffy.

I am pretty proud of these. Especially since it is my first time seeing and capturing them.

  13. I am not an expert, but I would agree with Gabriel.
I would buy some gear from http://schiit.com. They are cheap. They also sell high-quality equipment. It gets really great reviews.

The best part about getting a DAC + Amp from this place is not only will it work on your PC, but you can move it to any other sound equipment you might have in the house.

Take a look at the Modi 2 and Magni 2.

  14. Sounds like you want an RGB keyboard, like the Corsair K65, K70, or K95 RGB.

That split space bar is definitely funky, and not something I could easily get use to either, since most of the time my right thumb is hitting the space bar and not the left thumb. When I'm gaming, then yeah, it's the left thumb, but typing? Typing is the right thumb, so I would have to do like Amanda and get it remapped for both sets of space bars to be a space bar.

I will take a look at these as well! Thanks Troy!

  15. Very nice review Amanda!

I have been in the market for a new keyboard for a few months now.

This might be a contender but as I am typing this post I notice that I use the center of the spacebar when I type.

So yeah, not to talk anymore about your horrible spacebar experience. I kind of feel like I would have the same issue.

I also kind of wish that since it did allow you to turn on the backlighting on any keys it would have also come with the option of choosing different colours for each key.

I want a keyboard that will do like a neon green on the WASD keys when I am gaming. It would have been nice back when I was big into WoWto have different colours on the keys so I could just say Red = Sheild Slam.

  16. Hrmm.. that is an interesting thought..

I looked through the code and if I am, I cannot figure out where.

I dunno.. I made another version of this program and it works, but it does not have the menu this one has and it also does not have a way to test the code like this version has.

However it does work correctly and it sounds like my teacher does not care if it has a testing feature or not so I might just turn that one in.

  17. Hey ya'll!

I am working on my final programming project and I am stuck. My code runs with no errors, but my output is wrong.

When you look at the code you are going to wonder why I am not using a calendar function that is built in and the answer is I am not allowed to.

When you run my code you get 3 options.

Option 1 allows you to choose a day of the week.

It will tell you the next day, the previous day, and then it will ask you to input how many days in advance you want it to be.

If I recall right on option 1 when you enter in the advance days it never returns the correct day.

Option 2 is my testing option. It has a static day set (Sunday).

    Here is the output:

    Capture.JPG

As you can see from the photo adding 9 days, previous day, and add 3 days is totally wrong. EDIT: I actually just realized I uploaded the wrong screen capture. This photo is right.

I was hoping someone could help me out with this as I have been racking my head on it for the last couple days.

I have uploaded my code to Google Docs here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DRPgN0cK16P-dNpFTzFM074zweX4LN00z5iI8THxe8Y/edit?usp=sharing

    Thanks for any help!

  18. Sorry to backtrack but I just woke up and missed pretty much everything after the Xbox stuff.

So in regards to the XBO backwards compatibility with the 360 it sounds like you can take your 360 discs, load it into the XBO and it downloads the game so you can play it in some type of virtual console.

Do they happen to mention what is going to keep people from disc swapping?

If Troy happens to have a bunch of 360 games I wanted but didn't want to go out and buy. What is keeping me from borrowing Troy's discs and copying them to my XBO?

Troy, I also laughed at the Need for Speed. I was just telling you how I missed the game lol!

I wish they would use the Forza mechanics in the game though. Made the driving a tad more realistic. I don't know but from the gameplay trailer it seems like controlling the car is going to be a pain in the arse.

    Multiplayer Battlefront... Yes!

Anyone else get hard when they saw Luke and Vader about to go one on one?

I can't wait for Nintendo's presentation later today. They pretty much need to deliver this year to start making up for all this loss they incurred.

Need more Zelda. Need Metroid. I want a new Mega Man. You know what could be really bad arse? Excitebike remake. Yes!

I also always wished they would do a new Mario side scroller game with new 3D graphics. Even if they just redid the original 3. That would be sweet.
