Brutality Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 (edited) So my mate wants the GTX 680 (unless there is a better single-card solution, not more expensive) But now I am wondering if his processor is fast enough - I remember when I went from my 5870 to 6950 CF, my old C2D was too slow Here are his system specs MBD: Gigabyte EP43-S3L socket LGA775 1600MHz FSB CPU: Intel Core2Quad Q9550 @ 2.83GHz w/ stock cooler GPU: Gigabyte GV N470SO-13I PSU: Cooler Master GX RS-650-ACAA-E3 RAM: 4x 2048MB Kingston HyperX PC2-6400 800Mhz DDR2 (6-6-6-18) SSD: Kingston SSDNOW! V100 128GB (Yes, I sold my SSD to him since I wanted an OCZ Vertex 3 240GB ) HDD: Samsung SpinPoint F1 Desktop Class HD753LJ 750 GB MON: Samsung SyncMaster P2270 21.5 inch @ 1920x1080 CAS: Thermaltake Overseer RX-I OS: Windows 7 Home Premium x64 Edited August 19, 2012 by Brutality
IVIYTH0S Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 Crossfire generally takes a good processor to handle the managing of the Crossfire resources (or in short, a better CPU helps alot with SLI or Crossfire) but his Q9550 should be ok for that...though a 680 seems a bit much for 1080P... I'd got either 660Ti or 7950 personally...at that resolution you should be set for a good bit.
MJCRO Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 You can always just overclock that Q9550 and get rid off any bottle necking with a SLI/Crossfire setup.

Fixed It's be about as good as a Phenom II X4, an i5 or i7 would better handle the added load of two or more GPUs
CowKing Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 The motherboard doesn't even support SLI, so the point is kind of moot. My Q9450 is still doing well in games, and shouldn't bottleneck a GTX 680.
apslao Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Hey by any chance, if you do upgrade your proc/MB, let me know. Id be interested in taking the processor/MB off your hands . The girl friend needs her own build.

Alright, I will tell him he has a buyer if he intends to make a larger upgrade, while he is at it But I don't know if it will work out if you live in the US, because of the shipping costs, but I don't really know - I've just been told never to buy stuff from US (amazon.com in particular), because of the customs/duties (not sure if correct word)... But I have no idea how private sales work to US I just realized he has two options with a GTX 680 - 2GB or 4GB version Now, he doesn't want to overclock it, so he prefers to buy them factory overclocked. Anyways, he can get the 2GB version with up to 1201MHz clock or the 4GB version with 1006MHz clock; http://www.edbpriser.dk/hardware/grafikkort.aspx?nf=strmatrix4%3a%5e%22NVIDIA+GeForce+GTX+680+%C2%A40.0000000000%22%24%5bMultiValSep%5d%C2%A7&qt=Fql I don't even know if he wants to pay 4500DKK, since he told me he was gonna buy for 3000-4000DKK, but since he is at work now I mght as well ask what is best at 1920x1080 Btw, it's not a matter of "Getting a 680 for 1080p is overkill", it's a matter of "I want to beat you in benchmarks" He wants the 680 because he knows it's better than my 6950 CF lol UPDATE: He is willing to pay 4500DKK if it's better, so we wait in patience Edited August 20, 2012 by Brutality

Skidmarks Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 The Q9550 is still a decent chip by today's standards. It should be fine with a GTX 680.
