#1556937 SD camcorder

Posted by ooztuncer on 13 May 2008 - 12:17 PM in OCC Member's Lounge

Hey there! thank you for the response - it is definitely a scary wait for now (for the baby i mean).

On a side note, I am still a virgin in OCC.Therefore, I don't know where to post.

#1556935 SD camcorder

Quick question dear old friends,
We are expecting our first baby within 10-15 days and I am thinking* to get a budget SD camcorder for simple point and shoot purposes. We have a Canon 20D for photography and my mother-in-law brought a compact Sony digital camera for less serious photo shooting sessions (also for 640x320 video).

It seems like the best bet is Sony DCR-HC90 or 96. Panasonic had some good cameras with a lot of manual options (like GS250, 320, or 400) but from what I read Sony is best for shooting in low light conditions and in AUTO mode. Furthermore, HC90/96 is on par with Pannys when it comes to PQ.

Do you have any other recommendations? Spending $220 on HC90 or $280 on HC96 is a wise decision compared to getting a Canon HV20 or HV30 for 3 times the money?

MiniDV is completely OK with me - I'm definitely against DVD or hd camcorders....

Lemme know!

PS: also, I bought a brand new Kodak Z1012 IS digital camera 15 days ago from Kodak for its 720p video capability; but it is going back due to very, very poor performance... Therefore, I am not buying a digital camera for their video capability.

PS2: one other concern is the fkin PAL vs NTSC issue. We are going back home within several years and I need to sell whatever I buy today. Video editing from 24p to 25p (for hd camcorders) are too cumbersome for me.

#1536460 slingbox

resurrection!

I have several questions to the users of slingbox. Hope they are not too stupid questions, because I have no knowledge of slingbox or orb. Here they are:

I am thinking to buy the Pro version (which accepts cable tuner) to set it up in my brother's place. My brother has basic cable from Time Warner (no set top box), but I don't have any subscription to cable or dish at all. I believe with this tool I can watch TV from my place (6 miles from his house).

1) What are the rules and regulations around the usage of this tool? Because, in one way, it means free broadcasting for some people if the host wants to share his/her subscription.

2) Does slingbox upconverts or pass-through video signals; i.e. if the input is cable tuner, then the output should be also cable tuner? - or can you use s-video, component, or hdmi as the output options? If, indeed, you can use any output option regardless of the input, can slingbox upconverts 480i signals to 480p, 720p, or 1080i? If, indeed, it upconverts the signal, does it do that on component and hdmi level? Also, do you know whether the scalar inside the unit is a good one? (if there is a scalar of course)

3) If the TV at the source turned off, can you view/change the channels in your laptop/desktop/pda in a remote location? What happens if the source turns on his tv and starts changing channels? Can you watch different channels simultaneously with the slingbox pro model? I believe momo wrote that you can't view two different channels at the same time in one of the other models, anything is different in the pro model?

4) Physically, how it works? Is below process doable?

cable tuner > slingbox > cable tuner/component/hdmi > tv (at source)
slingbox > laptop/desktop (remote location) > hdmi/dvi > tv (at remote location)

5) Can you use 2 slingbox simultaneously? Situation: my brother has cable subscription and I have HTPC with hd-dvd/blu-ray drive built-in; and we would like to view each other's content. Is it possible to build a sharing medium with 2 slingbox pro's? i.e., :

Cable (my brother's place) > my brother's slingbox > my HTPC (my place) > my TV (watching channel 13)
at the same time:
hd-dvd movie playing in my HTPC > my slingbox > my brother's laptop > my brother's tv

which means, my htpc needs to playback/broadcast hd-dvd movie via my slingbox and at the same time captures data from my brother's slingbox and playback on my tv.

In this situation, how is he going to access my hard drive and select the movie that he wants to watch? Is my computer needs to be turned on all the time?

Sorry for the lots of noob questions!!

#1536036 $200 cash prize logo contest!

wow.. pretty serious thread or pretty serious people around to delete the 'fun' posts which might have increased the participation to this design challenge (thread view increased from 335 to 473 (138 hits) in less than 24 hours - 40% increase in one day comparing to only 335 hits within last 14 days)...

I believe 'come on people produce something' is a better fit, huh!..

good luck guys.
