Can't you use a different VM managing/accessing program?

Was worth a shot :-/

I've always had impeccable luck with Windows when no one else has... To your credit I have never used a VM before but still would like to try it one day in cases like this, maybe maybe an XP, 7 and a Linux VM.

yep thats were I'm getting the loop from. I get the inf file and it reads it as the correct pritner but when I select next, all I get a message asking if I want to add it and than I select yes and I just get a ding and back to the last screen. Nothing gets added. Looks like I'll try the VM next.

You even tried uninstalling the device (or unknown device) from Device Manager? (even enable the hidden devices and uninstall anything related to it)

It's worth a shot, and then VM if you have to. It'd just be a pain to have to VM every time you wanted to use the printer lol

Let me/us know how it goes, I kinda found out how to do it while I was in panic mode trying to get her laptop's video to display properly.

I'm getting a infinite loop. After I choose my own drivers and continue it asks me if I want to add printer and than I get a ding and it goes to naming the printer.. It won't add a printer.

I'm tempted to try the Hyper-V which is built into windows 8.1

Did you try manually adding the drivers by pointing device manager to their parent folder or going to the subfolder with the raw driver files and then right clicking and installing them yourself?

I was going to suggest a virtual Windows 7 or whatever just for printing, I've seen/heard many people do that as a solution.

the reboot trick didn't work for me but i am on an old Motorola Docsis 1.0 modem LOL

should really think about getting that Docsis 3 and be done with it....

I'm pretty damn happy with my Motorola SB6141, but SB6121 would probably have been fine too.

I guess that does make me feel better, lol. But still, I'm waiting for the day I can move from Comcast and onto some other provider.

I do have access to higher plans, I just don't want "promotions" or bundled services. I simply want Internet only, with no promotions applied so the price will remain the same each and every month. From talking to a representative, they have a 25Mbps plan for $53.99 (no promotional rate), which simply doesn't make sense. Before the "free doubling of speed," the 6Mbps plan was $49.95 (remember, I'm paying $39.95 for the 3Mbps plan). So for $4 more, I can somehow more than quadruple my Internet speed? I'm not buying it, lol. :P

Additionally, the service representatives for Comcast are horrible. I called to verify my speed (to see if I'm actually get the 6Mbps plan as a part of the free doubling of speed), and the lady says "You have the 50Mbps plan." I said "Let me speak to your manager please," since I know that I don't. After 2-3 minutes of holding another woman comes onto the line and states that she's a service representative in the video and on-demand department. She goes onto say that since they can't route calls internally due to "network upgrades," I have to either call back, or she can have a manager call me back later.

What.

-Edit-

Nothing on my Comcast account, including my bill, shows what Internet speeds I pay for, lol. Additionally, when going to look at "upgrades" online through their portal, not one Internet option is available without TV or phone bundled, and this includes the plan that I am currently subscribed to right now (Economy Plus). Comcast is ridiculous, lol.

I usually don't sign in when I look for new promotions as they won't show for current customers but only new customers (but you can bitch and moan and customer care will still add them if they're applicable)

lol right but SAMSUNG kicks ass... and my 830 has bees so sweet! why not lol

Because I haven't seen a SSD that wasn't kick ass and Samsung charges too much because everyone just will pay it without thinking  (much like Apple)

Look:

Samsung 850 Pro 256GB for $165

compared to a

Crucial V4 256GB for $89.95

or

SanDisk Ultra Plus 256GB for $99.99

You're not going to see that ~$65-$75 extra spent justified in any way!

If you're going to consider paying that much, then why not go $15 more for this Mushkin Chronos 480GB for $180

You're literally paying all that money for a longer warranty or are you planning on keeping the drive for 10 years? lol

ok all ty. i am looking at up dating the sdd 1st to a SAMSUNG 850 Pro 256g, i do have to keep a eye on the 830. i got it in 2013 froe a old set up and just keep it to save money on this set up. i like my 1080P monitor but with a evga 980 sc it just dose not seem right to not have better. ( its a great monitor for a 1080p 1920 by 1080 ) and worked great for my old 560 na ti video card!

Don't be one of those "only Samsung SSDs" guys, there are much better deals to be had then the samsung drives.

Here's a Patriot Blaze 240GB for $85 after MIR, I'm sure more deals will come around.

or

not for the weak of heart, an OCZ Arc 240GB for $50 after MIR

Can you manually install the drivers? (find where they unpack and then look for the MSI setup file and right click and do install) I did that for my ex's laptop when I put her to 8.1 from 7 and her laptop didn't have any official 8.1 drivers for her integrated graphics. Worked out just fine!

#2134099 Are the prices on 1440p gonna drop in 2015?

Posted by IVIYTH0S on 17 December 2014 - 01:23 PM in Video Cards and Monitors

I've seen good 1440P monitors in the ~$250 USD range. What are price were you looking at them going down to?

Well i don't know about the states , but here in Europe , a decent monitor such as the U2713HM , costs around 500 quint.

This monitor will ship worldwide:

Yeah I'd echo your concerns about a better monitor (well higher resolution anyway), let that GTX 980 breathe a little! Maybe a Korean 27" 2560x1440 would be nice (others would probably be able to better tell ya what ones to look at)

Are you planning to SLI? It seems like a pretty hefty power supply you have.

Personally using a 120GB SSD for over a year when SSDs were more expensive I'd recommend getting a 240GB-256GB SSD so you wouldn't have to drive yourself crazy managing the space. I haven't seen any reason to go bigger than my 240GB drives IMHO, I get tempted when I see 480GBs going for so "cheap" but have a pretty comfortable amount of free space on them. Just don't jump between an army of games while keeping them all installed. I have two installed right now on my desktop (LA Noire and Tomb Raider) and there's still a healthy amount of space to play with.

Maybe see what your i5 can do since you have a good cooler on it, let me know what you think of my suggestions/critiques :)

#2134057 Comcast says faster speeds ready, reboot at will

Posted by IVIYTH0S on 17 December 2014 - 05:12 AM in Networking and Internet

Internet only package, we pay $39.95 per month. In order to go up to 6 down (before the supposed increase in speed for free), we would have been charged $49.95 per month.

The Internet speeds are livable, but when you have no cable and use Netflix, Amazing Prime, Pandora, and YouTube for your multimedia, it doesn't seem all that fast. The issue for my home is that since we have bad cell reception where I live, we use Hangouts for the majority of our phone calls. With Netflix going on at the same time, the calls go in and out. Additionally, If I play an online game, it'll stutter and lag while the wife watches Netflix. Even if I download a file over Steam, Netflix is unusable, unless I cap the Steam download at somethinglike 192Kbps, lol.

:( wish I could share my bandwidth with you.

$49.99 gets the 25Mbps plan (with basic cable) and I pay $59.99 for 105Mbps (with slightly enhanced basic cable) but my TV box is unplugged... I'm tempted to just go with the Internet only for $54.99 since I don't use the cable box. They really threw me under the bus (well you may not think so given the crap they give you there but...) because I signed up with them because they had a promotion where my 105Mbps plan was $49.99 but the sale rep's an asshole and signed me up for the 25Mbps plan and then told me Customer Care would take care of it. The problem was, once my internet was finally setup and tested at 25Mbps (30Mbps actual), I complained and since it was September (by 3 effin' days), they wouldn't honor the other promotion because they "couldn't find it" in their system (August only promotion). It's the SOLE reason I chose them over Verizon FiOS (which would have gave me the same TV package, HBO included as well with 50down,50up) for $50/month. Though as bitter as I am, I'd transfer over just out of spite if Verizon didn't bake so many stupid fees into their price, because after taxes and fees their "$50" became like $63 and that's what I pay after taxes and all with comcast for twice the speed (down) so for now I'm their sucker. I check every month in hopes that $49.99 plan will come back though, one day...
Yeah, you pay a pretty good price compared to what they offer here. That is a shame that you were put through so many hoops though, but in the end, you're speed is quite good for the price, even compared with Verizon FiOS which I can't seem to hear enough about (all good things). But yeah, drop that cable. :)

Unfortunately, with living on the post that I do, Comcast is the only provider. Rumor has it that Verizon used to be on post too, but that supposedly ended a few years ago. Story has it that there was a water leak at the demarcation point, and Verizon didn't want to pay the bill to have it fixed. So, Comcast "saved the day" and fixed it, which granted them the contract to provide service to the entire post that I reside on. As such, Comcast has a monopoly over the entire base, and the prices are ridiculous, since if you don't go through them, you don't have access to cable, phone, or Internet services.

I technically live in DC with my zip code, and I'm paying $10 less for Internet compared to what my mother pays for 10 down and 1 up in Ohio. I even used to get 6 down and 1 up back in Texas for $29.99, if I remember correctly. I understand that the area I live in is technically expensive, but when I have coworkers claim that they get 50 down and 50 up, or 75 down and 75 up with Verizon FiOS, within 10 miles from base, for around double the price of my Internet, it makes me envious, lol.
Actually I looked and your speeds are available here as well for the same prices you're paying if that makes you feel better. I'm guessing you don't have access to the higher plans though?

I'm being tempted by their $39.99 special for 25Mbps internet+basic TV they have going on right now but now that I've tasted speed and it's hard to "go back" even though 30Mbps (actual) is PLENTY....decisions decisions. I wouldn't be getting my best bang for the buck but the savings would be nice. You should PM me your addres and I can check and see if there are any deals I could find ya (it's kind of my specialty)

At least you have faster speeds, lol. :P Paying for 3 down, 0.768 up here. Called Comcast a few days ago to look at potential upgrades, and they said that the individuals in my area got a boost in speed, and that my plan should now be 6 down and 1 up. Happy with that, I stopped looking into plan upgrades.

Even over a wired connection directly to the modem, I'm getting roughly 3.7 down and 0.90 up. Winning.

/sarcasm

What do you pay for that?

We have DSL down the shore and it's 1Mbps at best down, and horrrrrrible. So 3-4 times that should be livable, I had the 25Mbps plan before this and was totally happy...but I stream a lot and have everything wired in my apartment so I could take full use of the download speed of the Blast package

#2134030 RMA Success Thread 2014/2015

Posted by IVIYTH0S on 16 December 2014 - 05:25 PM in OCC Member's Lounge

Manufacturer: MSI

Product that was RMA'd: MSI Twin Frozr HD7970

Warranty period on original product: 3 Year Warranty

Product received from RMA: MSI Twin Frozr HD7970

Warranty period on received product: 3 Year Warranty

Time Table:

5/8: RMA# acquired

5/8: Shipped faulty video card out

5/12: Arrived at RMA Facility

5/15: Processed at RMA Facility

5/27: Received replacement card

Turn around time: 19 days (13 business days)

Was the problem solved: Yes

Was the RMA easy to setup: Yes

Were you satisfied with turnaround time: Yes

Did they meet or exceed your expectations of a good RMA, and why: They exceed my expectations because it turns out that I don't think my old 7970 was even bad because the new one was still having the same issues as the original. It turned out that once I uninstalled MSI Afterburner, all was made right. It was nice of them to go the extra mile and return a different card to me just in case there was something wrong (though I'm sure the somewhat long turnaround was partly due to them unable to find anything wrong with the RMA'd card)

Would buy from this manufacturer again: Absolutely!
