#1949431 Thinking about an Alienware

If both of these dont make much a difference then what is the purpose, I mean y is there is such a Major Difference in Price between 2630 and 2820 QM if they really are not that different ????
It should be able to do better than 2630 because of its cache and clock are more ?? This is so Confusing.. :(

The price difference is huge because they want to make money! People see something they think is better, and they are willing to spend more.

The 3GB video card is absolutely NOT worth the extra money on a laptop. Desktop GPU's rarely benefit from it, but the laptop GPU's are already downclocked/modified and are going to be bottlenecked by that- not the video RAM. Go with the 1.5GB, you won't see a difference.

The CPU is technically better with a higher clock and more cache, but really the difference is negligible for many tasks. Particularly things like multitasking and gaming don't see alot of benefit from faster clocked CPU's. There might be a few FPS (technically better) advantage, but its almost never worth the cost to pay for a higher clocked laptop CPU. As long as they are both quad-cores, I would get the cheaper one.

The important thing to keep in mind is that most people who buy gaming laptops do not know what they are paying for. That means companies make LOTS of money by adding 'customization' options and 'recommended' upgrades that really aren't worth how much they charge.

#1935997 I need to break my computer

The OP mentioned a couple of times this wasn't his first idea... but a last resort as all previous pleas had fallen on deaf ears with his boss.

I can sympathize... when you need to edit massive spreadsheets and the workstation is coughing up it's own guts just trying to start up, it really makes it hard to do your job. Unfortunately, managers and supervisors aren't always sympathetic to employee needs.

While purposely damaging someone elses property isn't commendable, I can definitely say I've been pushed to that edge before. Luckily, we had an IT guy who persuaded my boss to change the machines out (she listened to a guy because he was in IT, while I had been saying the same thing for a year).

Glad to hear you're getting an upgrade. Take good care of it, and make good use of it!

I just built my brother an AM3 machine on an 880G chipset, same HDD (except 1TB), more RAM (8GB), an ATI 5770 (not a 5850) and I did it for under $600 all brand new.

For a used system, I think you will probably need to come down on your price to get interest.
