The system is up and running, I finished by getting the Asus P8P67 Pro (Rev3.0), and the i5 2500K, moved the ram, video card, dvd and harddisks from my system and everything is just working fine, even without reinstalling windows !!! first couple boots my old windows 7 install had a bsod, then i set the SATA in the bios as IDE mode (and not the default AHCI mode), and windows came up, obviously without drivers (many undetected devices), installed from the asus DVD and it is running....
  2. Ok, but the OS is not the main subject now, I was interested whether getting this new Sandy Bridge 1155 system now or wait a little to get something more stable, for example the Z68 chipset. I will be using an external PCIE graphics card and I am not interested in using the Intel HD graphics in the CPU itself, which is what the Z68 chipset will support. I was an AMD fan because of their backward/forward compatibility of all their motherboards and CPUs, while Intel changes sockets very frequently, and I don't want to get a system that in 1 year is obsolete and need to change both mobo and cpu instead of just getting a faster CPU.

Currently I have the system as in my signature, but recently I started to have the need some extra power of a quad core system for video and multimedia processing, and I am really interested in trying a Hackintosh system, and I was thinking of getting these components to upgrade my system: Intel i5 2500 or i7 2600 Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3 or if available at the local store an Asus P8P67 And I will use the rest from my current system: 4x2GB GeIL BlackDragon DDR3 1600MHz ATI Sapphire HD 4670 Ultimate, 512MB GDDR3 PCI-E x16 OCZ ModStream 520w power supply CoolerMaster Hyper TX3 cooler Storage The rest In other words, i am only changing motherboard and processor. What do you say? is it worth the update? or shall I wait for more stable 1155 chipsets and/or cpus?
  5. - Yes, drivers downloaded from Realtek and Gigabyte website, Windows 7 x64 - just did now, still doesn't work - hardware is ok, as in Ubuntu 10.04 on the same computer they work correctly in surround 4.1 - yes, 4.1 in the Configure Speakers, just clicking on the rear speakers icons to produce test sound is not working i guess i'll install a clean windows 7 in an empty partition and try everything clean :s
  6. The main question remains for the memory: As i have been reading, AMD doesn't work well with 1600 MHz memory, they can support only 1333, (I might be mistaken, i am new to this just like you). For my system upgrade (signature) that I built 4 days ago, i got the Geil BlackDragon 1600 MHz memory, i didn't get the 1333 version because they cost €5 less than the 1600, so i went for the later, but now on my first steps into overclocking AM3 i am still unable to make then get more than 1340 MHz, system, locks, ecc... even though my motherboard is rated for 1666+

I have been using since few years the Creative Inspire 4.1 speakers, and they worked well with my old system, which had a Realtek ALC850 8-channel audio (AC'97 drivers), and with Windows 7 X64 everything was working just fine. Now with the new system i built, based on a GigaByte MA790FXT-UD5P, which uses a Realtek ALC 889a chipset, i am not able to make the rear speakers work. i installed the latest realtek drivers (2.49), but the rear speakers are not working... what am i doing wrong? i tried with the jack sensing feature to put the connector in another jack and setting it to rear, but still nothing works.

I've been trying with overclocking and CnQ, and it seem it makes a little difference: I've change my overclock to HT Bus: 250 CPU Multiplier: Auto CPU speed: 1000-3500 MHz (4x to 14x) CPU Voltage: 1.06 to 1.41 Memory 5.33x (1333) Now on idle (4x CPU multiplier and and 1.06 v) the consumption is 89 W, little load (watching a divx and navigating) max 100 W, and on full load, with stress testing apps it reaches 146 W it might be a reason to make me enable CnQ on my overclock ...
  9. I finished building my new system (the one in the signature), and already started overclocking it. Over than getting the max of everything, one of my main concerns is the power consumption, i want my PC to use as low as possible for a fast system. On my old system (Opteron 165 with DFI LanParty nf4 ultra-d), I overclocked with CnQ enabled, and had no stability issues (not an extreme OC, 1800@2500 Mhz, memory was low quality to OC more). Now to reach my current overclock (3510Mhz, 270 HT Bus), I disabled, as many tutorials say, the CnQ, but here is the strange stuff noticed by measuring the watt consumption with the kill-a-watt device: Case 1: Everything on stock values, IDLE: HT Bus: 200 CPU Multiplier: 4 CPU speed: 800 MHz CPU Voltage: 1.07 CPU watt consumption: 15 W (according to CPUID Hardware Monitor) Whole PC consumption: 96 W (kill-a-watt) Case 2: Everything on stock values, Full load: HT Bus: 200 CPU Multiplier: 14 CPU speed: 2800 MHz CPU Voltage: 1.41 CPU watt consumption: 65 W (Regor CPU, TDP = 65 W) Whole PC consumption: 145 W (kill-a-watt) After the OC, with CnQ disabled, here is the result: Case 3: Overclocked system, IDLE: HT Bus: 270 CPU Multiplier: 13 CPU speed: 3510 MHz CPU Voltage: 1.41 CPU watt consumption: 65 W (according to CPUID Hardware Monitor) Whole PC consumption: 101 W (kill-a-watt) Case 4: Overclocked system, Full load: HT Bus: 270 CPU Multiplier: 13 CPU speed: 3510 MHz CPU Voltage: 1.41 CPU watt consumption: 65 W (according to CPUID Hardware Monitor) Whole PC consumption: 146 W (kill-a-watt) So, even that CnQ is disabled, and the voltage to the CPU remains constant, the cpu consumes less power when idle. why is this? and if so, what is the benefit of enabling CnQ? well, i am saving 5 watts/h, but that's not a good reason to make me enable CnQ :s
  10. I got all the mentioned parts, and installed them in my case, and everything worked just fine. My OCZ PSU with only 4 pin 12V power for cpu was enough, RAM is detected as 1333 only and not 1600, will try to overclock it. Question: Do i really need to install the AMD Chipset stuff or windows 7 provide drivers for the chipset?

I am building a new system to replace my current 939 system (Signature), I will be using storage and case from my current build, but replace motherboard, cpu and ram, and a friend offered me these components for a low price (all three at €230): Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P Processor: AMD X2 240 (Regor) 2.8 GHz 65w Memory: Geil Black Dragon 4 Gb (2x2 Gb) ddr3 1600 Mhz CL8 (GB34GB1600C8DC) But I need an advice about 2 points: 1) I've read that the AMD X2 Regor processor have only 1066 mhz DDR3 memory controller, so if I install 1600 mhz they will not be used on their maximum speed? or the motherboard can overclock in someway to use them? 2) I have an OCZ 520 12U power supply, but it doesn't have the 8 pin atx_12v_2x4 connector that this mobo needs, reading i understand that i can install a 4 pin 12v to this 8pin connector and it should go, is this true? an alternative is that I have an unused LC Power 480 S power supply that have this connector, maybe i should use it instead? and one last question: My main reason to upgrade is that I need at least 4GB memory, which I am unable to find for my 939 system (DFI mobo need good quality identical memory sticks, hard to find, and expensive)... but how much do new systems consume in power terms? My current system consumes on idle about 95watt, on on full load it can reach 145 watt (using kill-a-watt meter) anyway, for now i'll use this system, but i guess that very soon i'll move to an X3 or X4 processor...

It's working, but i'd like to have it say CPU fan seeing the pinout, the unused pin is the CONTROL, so if it's not connected how is the speed varying? mobo is controlling by changing voltage? update: better to connect to cpu header, as this morning the case was cold and the fan went off for few seconds !!!

With summer, I changed the cooler of my system (Signature) from the stock AMD that came with the Opteron 165 processor (a Foxxcon 4 heatpipes, copper base with aluminium fins), and got myself a CoolerMaster Hyper TX 3, one of the few that i found that still support 939 sockets. But there is one problem (well, 2 in my case): 1- This hsf has a 4-pin connector, and the motherboard has only 3 pin connectors, so 1 pin should be unused, the guides on the 4pin seems to connect the correct 3 pins from the 4. 2- the DFI UT nf4-UltraD's 3pin connector for the CPU fan is near a capacitor, and the 4-pin of the cooler master can't be inserted in the CPU fan connector. Anyway to get the system working i installed the CPU fan connector to the 'FAN 2' connector (the PWM fan) and everything seems to work, playing the the bios options of the PWM temp i reached a good point where the motherboard control the cpu fan as if it is the case fan, varying from 900 rpm to 2800, good enough for now. if i want to mode the 4 pin connector, can i simply cut the 4th unused pin? what is it for? the fan already reports speed and get its speed controlled. so what is it for? Anyway, i am already satisfied with this Hyper TX3, temperature dropped by nearly 10 degrees on full load, with stock fan CPU temp used to reach 68 °C, since yesterday the max i saw was 56, in addition to be much quieter...

Well, i did not uninstall the single core cpu from device manager before plugging the new one, i just reset the bios to default settings, installed new cpu and started windows vista, upon reboot it found and install new hardware, then rebooted, and there it was dual core cpu (Computer still says: ACPI x86-based PC, is it ok?). few restarts later (while overclocking) i got the BSOD, but then after i reached a stable OC all is ok now. i also lost the activation status and had to redo it by automated phone system.

I am noticing a problem with my system: I always use hibernate to shut down the computer at night, always worked well, but after this opteron upgrade sometimes when the computer wakes up the usb ports (usually mouse) having no power (all lights off), and i should reboot to give power back. what could be the problem? anyway, now i went back to 2448MHz (272x9). update: I may have solved the problem by increasing the bus to 280MHz
