PlanetSmasher Posted July 5, 2018 Posted July 5, 2018 For years, I've left my PC on, 24/7, but now I'm using an M.2 SSD card. Should I shut down my PC to save it heat related ware and tear, or is it better to leave it on 24/7 to save wear and tear of the M.2 SSD from temperature differences between on and off? Guest_Jim_* Posted July 5, 2018 Posted July 5, 2018 There are others that are probably better able to answer this than me, but I doubt the m.2 drives will be significantly worn by the computer staying on all the time. Unless they are being used the entire them as well, especially being written to (reading does not generate as much heat as the process to write data), what heat they might experience should be within their endurance. I have a Samsung 960 EVO installed currently and have my computer running 24/7 but its temperature is only 38 C now. Its operating temperatures are 0 C to 70 C; pretty much smack in the middle so I'm not worried. It is my OS drive though and so I doubt it has been doing too much over night. ir_cow Posted July 5, 2018 Posted July 5, 2018 The only major problem with leaving older computers on was if they didn't have the hard drives spin down after X amount of time (performance mode), they would wear out. These SSDs don't have that problem, so its kinda down to the PSU and the different cap lives now. 10-12 years is the longest I've seen a server running without being shut down or replaced at my work (besides the dual PSUs and HDDs).
