Last week, Bethesda Game Studios teased a new entry in the Fallout universe, Fallout 76. Not much was revealed then, which lead to plenty of speculation on just what it entails. The trailer for it mentions rebuilding, so is this a larger take on the settlement building of Fallout 4, where we have to rebuild parts of society? Was it multiplayer? Single player? What we did know is that it's set in Vault 76, which is a control vault and set to open 25 years after the bombs dropped. So that means Fallout 76 is set in the year 2102, which makes it the earliest a Fallout game has taken place. Bethesda's Todd Howard even said this is a prequel to the series, with a wasteland unlike any we've seen yet. However, that still leaves the question of what the game actually is.

Fortunately, the Bethesda E3 conference confirmed Fallout 76 is set in West Virginia and is four times the size of Fallout 4. There was mention of having to rebuild the world and even some scenes set in Washington, D.C., which does show just how large the world of Fallout 76 is when we step out of the vault. Now, what is the game actually? Well, it's an entirely online multiplayer game. Yes, that's right, Fallout 76 is an online multiplayer game that you can play solo if you prefer, but can team up with friends and strangers if you want. You can do quests solo, build up your settlement solo (yes, settlement building is back), explore the six distinct regions solo, and just treat it as a regular, single-player Fallout game.

Or you can team up with some friends, make new ones, get shot at by strangers, and experience everything Fallout 76 has in an online game. Some will be hostile, some will be friendly, and you can experience it all together if you so choose. There are new creatures and mutants to fight, new threats to prepare against, a whole new world to explore, and much more. The game features 100% dedicated servers, but you don't join a server and have all your progression tied to it. No, your progression is tied to your specific character, so whether you play solo or with friends, it always goes with you. One more thing about progression is how death is not tied to it, so if you die, you don't have to worry about starting over from scratch again. Not bad for a survival game, which Fallout 76 certainly is. Just it's a softcore survival game, as Todd Howard put it.

The world of Fallout 76 has 16 times the detail as before, featuring new terrain and texture improvements, and also with the ability to see much farther than you could in previous games. That even means being able to see weather systems across the map. As mentioned, there are six distinct regions of West Virginia represented in Fallout 76, with the game building on the folklore and history of the region. Those regions also hold a secret, as there are nuclear missile solos hidden away. As you go about killing ghouls and other baddies, you will find access codes to these silos. If you don't have all the codes, maybe your friends do or some friendly strangers who want to take out a settlement or area causing problems for everyone. Get inside that silo, pick your target, and watch it be bathed in nuclear hellfire. It should make for quite a sight.

New power armor, new weapons, new enemies, new settlements, new regions, and a new online multiplayer experience. Fallout 76 certainly looks to have it all, and fortunately, we don't have long to wait to see it all. Fallout 76 arrives on November 14, 2018, for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. There is also a collector's edition that has a glow-in-the-dark map, little figurines to put on that map, and a wearable T-51b power armor helmet. It has a voice modulator even, so you can experience Fallout 76 without revealing your actual voice when you hop in with friends/strangers. Oh, and it also has access to the B.E.T.A. (Break-it Early Test Application) to give Fallout 76 a try before you dive in for good.
