Intel optane memory

Got on question, just read about the new Intel optane memory to improve system. Everthing i read is about improve system with hdd.

I got on 950 pro and 850 evo on my laptop, will this new memory still improve my system? Can't find a review with this memory tested on a system with ssd.

A lot of what I have seen describes the current crop of Optane-based consumer drives as not really worth it. That's not necessarily a strike against the hardware as much as a strike against Intel for how they have been trying to push it. The first consumer parts were low capacity and meant as a cache for Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) that required motherboards that supported. At least one larger capacity drive has also been released, but it too is mixed because while it might be nice technology, there are still faster, and cheaper, NVMe SSD drives. I want to say the endurance of the new storage medium though is impressive though, so great for enterprise, but perhaps not so much for consumer.

Something amusing though is one TechTuber did some tests with an Optane drive with the StoreMI software that comes with some AMD platforms and found it is easier to implement and benefit from than Intel's.

I read a review on Tom's Hardware about the new, soon to be released) Samsung Pro 970 (M.2).

If the article is to be believed, it will be faster than Optane but will be pricey.

I wasn't understand well what was optane. Now i see that is far better got a nvme. Bad that only samsung can delivere fast ssd nvme, when will others companies make same equal?

Western Digital actually released some WD Black NVMe drives that do compete with the Samsung 960 drives, so there are now two choices instead of just one.

Intel 900P PCIe 3.0 X4, NVMe is the fastest end-user SSD available right now. 

 

Edit : Intel's new 905P is now the fastest.

And you need to have a desktop to use it, so i don't think it can be compare to nvme from samsung.

Wd nvme got many problems and are not eual in speed to samsung

For laptop your best Optane option for now would be the Intel 800P M.2 SSD,.. it is only available in 58 and 118GB capacities with performance of 1.4GB/s read and 600MB/s write and over 340K IOPS. 

 

They are working on throwing more 3D XPoint chips on the other-side of the PCB and make 236GB and 944GB capacities,.. the problem most likely lies in the die size and their ability to stack at this point,.. there is an observable performance upgrade to even a NAND flash SSD system with the Optane 800P for typical everyday PC activities and the result of the low 4K random read and write benefits of Intel 3D XPoint.

 

Personally for a laptop I would stick with your Samsung 950 Pro.

Intel Rapid Storage Technology with Intel Optane memory modules only work on supported 8th Gen Intel Core Mobile Processors.

 

Optane memory for acceleration is for HDD not SSD,.. your asking "will this new memory improve my system" 

 

Performance wise the answer is no,.. your 950 Pro SSD and 850 Evo SSD are much faster than any HDD with Optane.

 

Storage wise the answer is perhaps,.. if you need more storage capacity you could use Intel Optane memory on your Secondary/Data SATA Drive.

 

Using your Samsung 950 Pro SSD as your Primary Drive,.. and a large capacity 4TB+ HDD as your Secondary/Data Storage with Optane would perhaps improve your storage capacity.
