Intel Announces New Security Technologies and Methods

This year did not start well for the technology industry, and especially for Intel, with multiple, serious security exploits being reported on, but now Intel has revealed some new security technologies that will be coming. Intel Threat Detection Technology (TDT) and Intel Security Essentials along with stronger relationships with academia to produce cybersecurity experts have been announced today.

Currently TDT consists of two things; Intel Advanced Platform Telemetry and Accelerated Memory Scanning. Advanced Platform Telemetry will first be seen in the Cisco Tetration platform for securing data centers and cloud workload. It uses platform telemetry and machine learning algorithms to do a better job catching advanced threats, reducing false positives, and reducing the performance hit of security systems. Accelerated Memory Scanning should also reduce the performance hit of security as it offloads the work of scanning the memory to the GPU built into many Intel CPUs. In early testing, this saw CPU utilization drop from 20% to 2%. Accelerated Memory Scanning will be integrated into Microsoft Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection.

Intel Security Essentials does not provide new or faster means of protecting systems, but unifies security capabilities across Intel Core, Xeon, and Atom processors. Secure boot, hardware protections, accelerated cryptography, and trusted execution enclaves are examples of the platform-integrated technologies Intel Security Essentials includes.

Today a partnership with Purdue University was revealed, with the university's launch of its Design for Security Badge Program it developed with Intel. More academic partners will be announced at the RSA conference this week.
