We are looking at a rumor here that comes from Heise.de, but being a rumor hardly stops it from being interesting. According to Heise.de and Wccftech, sourced below, the next generation of GPUs from NVIDIA will be called Ampere, following in the line of other scientist names like Fermi, Maxwell, and Pascal. Supposed Ampere will be shown off at GPU Technology Conference (GTC) 2018.
On its own, the next name being Ampere is not too surprising, but there is more to this rumor. Supposedly Ampere will be the successor to Pascal in the consumer space, meaning GeForce cards. One would expect Volta to be next, as has been shown in various roadmaps, especially as the architecture has already been shown off at events. Time will tell how much truth there is to this rumor; whether just the name is correct and what the next GeForce series contains.
