Big Data has become big business in recent years, as the ability to process massive amounts of information enables many other technologies. All of that data has to be stored somewhere though, so various technologies to increase data storage are being worked on, and recently Western Digital demonstrated one of its innovations. Microwave-Assisted Magnetic Recording (MAMR) can be integrated into future hard drives to increase capacity to as much as 40 TB by 2025.
For years the company has been working on two energy-assisted technologies, with heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) being the other, but it is only MAMR of the two that has demonstrated the desired reliability and cost profile. It works by using a device called the spin torque oscillator to generate a microwave field, which allows data to be recorded at ultra-high density without a loss in reliability. Eventually the technology is expected to allow over 4 terabits-per-square-inch and that 40 TB capacity by 2025, with continued expansion still possible.
Western Digital expects to start shipping the first ultra-high capacity MAMR HDD in 2019, targeting data centers used for Big Data applications.
