Gigabit only running half speed

I cant figure out what is going on. Gigabit service just turn on today windows 10 rig gets close to 900 down and the 50 up but the old win7 x58 rigs only getting around 500 down. All cat 6 cable even switched the two cable on the router win 10 almost a gig win 7 only 500...

 

I tried newest driver tested cables but obviously its not the cable as I switched them... Even tried a gigabit pci card I had samething... Any suggestions?

Just some ideas here, but at my parent's house I discovered that internet speed tests over a certain point are also very CPU dependent, it's possible the older rigs don't have the single threaded performance to max speed tests.  

 

Also many consumer routers that claim gigabit speed don't always maintain it or can't to multiple systems at once causing weird balancing issues.  When ANY other thing on the network is using the internet for more than keep alive type pings it kill my speeds on the server over there by as much as 60% even though many times the other PC is only using ~200Mbps.  

 

Here's a speedtest I just ran on my server with task manager CPU graph at the parent's house (The VM server with the 4930K @ 4.2Ghz) and it hits 22% CPU usage vs 1-2% before and after the test to get 800+ down (pretty much the max the router there lets me get, I can top 900 every time with a direct connection) and a low upload as my router there can't upload for shit the connection is actually 1000/1000.

 

 

Maybe that helps lead you somewhere, I know it was a frustrating mess until I figured out my scenario.

I was going to say you were having packet loss problems but switching cables and a different NIC would have solved that. To confirm, the old computer is getting 500 down while the new one is getting 900?

 

I kinda suspect what cchalogamer says is true. When I first got Gigabit lan (10+ years ago), I found any system that used software to drive the NIC usually sat at 70MB/s for transfer and the ones that where hardware based ran 100MB/s without issues. So I went ahead and put in all Intel gigabit NIC cards. Solved all my transfer speed problems. Most motherboard have like Realtek NIC in them which is 100% software (aka CPU) driven. Most cheap NIC cards do also, you need to look for the ones with heatsinks on them, that gives you a good indication they are hardware and not software driven.

Well you are right.. I never would have imagined an i7 980x not having enough power.. I have blue iris running surveillance server software that was taking 16%.. I turned the software off and speeds shot up to almost 900.. Guess its showing its age...

 

Routers new and modem netgear cm700 and a netgear nighthawk x10 aso I doubt its that...

 

It never really made any difference if it was running or not when speeds were a lot lower...

It's crazy how much CPU power the internet connection will actually use. To be honest though it's not all bad, after all how often do those systems even NEED to have such a connection to the internet?

 

Just imagine how I felt when my server at their house was based on a J1900 Baytrail Celeron

Well it is older tech but still pretty powerful I thought. Probably the 13 ip cameras on the network running. I didnt think much about cause it has never made a difference before but lot slower speed so guess it could handle it all...
