Muskie Posted July 23, 2017 Posted July 23, 2017 I just hit a physical limit with my current build and need to invest in a new cpu, mb and memory. I currently have an i7 920 on an x58 mb and 6gb of memory, but I am starting to develop some vr applications for some research I am working on. Since my system specs cannot cut it for the oculus rift, I am looking to upgrade. I have not been keeping up on much more than graphics cards so i am trying to figure out the best platform and processor to go forward with. Im in between the lga 1151, 2066, or the AM4 and I'm hoping to spend around $600 for the 3 componants. So for vr applications, some solidworks, and a bit of gaming, what is reccomended? Any advice would be helpful since I'm finding many if the reviews I am reading are from fanbois and I can't filter out the bias. Waco Posted July 23, 2017 Posted July 23, 2017 The best bang for buck these days is the 8 core Ryzen lineup, especially if you're doing anything that threads well (does your VR work require compiling?).
Muskie Posted July 23, 2017 Posted July 23, 2017 It does not require compiling at the moment, but it will in the future. I'll be working on a grant that hopefully should open up a few more doors, but there is no guarantee at the moment. Therefore I am hoping to put something together that can do everything I need (within reason).
Wolfrider Posted July 23, 2017 Posted July 23, 2017 Best bang for buck imo is buying a used 4770k. AM4 is the most future proof, as amd keeps their sockets quite a while longer than intel
Muskie Posted July 23, 2017 Posted July 23, 2017 (edited) Yes, I noticed that with my last Intel build that I could not upgrade due to the change in slot. Looks like I'll be leaning towards the am4 then. Any recommendations on a solid mb around the 200 USD range? (That is for the advice by the way) Edited July 23, 2017 by Muskie
Waco Posted July 23, 2017 Posted July 23, 2017 No reason to blow $200+ on a motherboard for a Ryzen chip unless you're going to try and overclock like crazy (and they all top out at ~4 GHz anyway): https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813145009 It comes with a free case too, at least today it does. EDIT: Cheap but fast memory: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16820313777 That puts you at well under $600 even if you buy the 8 core Ryzen 7 1700: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113428
xenkw0n Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 What Motherboard do you have? The cheapest upgrade for you might just be picking up a 6 core X58 Xeon chip and overclock it to 4.0-4.4ghz - X5650, X5660, X5670, X5675, etc...
Muskie Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 (edited) Thanks for all the advice. I have a gigabyte ud5(i forgett the rest of part numbers). I actually looked into the Xeon on the board, but I decided that I would do a bit of an overall upgrade (while my wife allows it). Im about 3-4 weeks out so I'll keep an eye on the prices. Thanks again Edited July 24, 2017 by Muskie
xenkw0n Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 Yea that board definitely supports them all. One of the higher end boards, specifically.
