Could use some suggestions for gpu

Recommended Posts

Currently I'm running a HD 6870 and hoping to start saving up for something better.

My minimum is to be able to play diablo 3 and skyrim on highest (ultra) settings (only running high right now) but would like to get something that will at least let me play some newer games on high.

I can't afford the latest and greatest gpus so just trying to get an idea of some used cards to keep an eye out for.

I would like to stay AMD but open to Nvidia suggestions too.

Thanks.

Oh and heres my current build specs.

Psu: 700W semi modular

Mobo: Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 Rev. 4.0

Cpu: AMD FX-6300

Gpu: Radeon HD 6870

SSD: OCZ Triton 150 240gb

HDD: Hitachi 2tb enterprise

ODD: LG DVD rw

What resolution are you at and is there a limit to the budget?

I'm running 1080P. I ran 720p and was not happy.

As for budget right now nothing lol thats why I'm looking for suggestions to see what I'll need but probably only be able to do $100 or so.

With only $100, I'd personally look into something used.  Wait for a good deal, or maybe settle on a gtx 960?

I agree with Fight Game. But, even used GPU's on eBay are not cheap as unless the board is 3-4 years old, they keep their value.

I found this Zotac on eBay - new was $390 - they want $110 - good price

Basicly trying to compile a list of ones to look for used so once i have money i know what to look for.

Was looking at buying my friends R9 270X when he upgrades but not sure if it is good enough.

One thing i learned is that better specs on paper doesnt always perform better.

You'll really want to spend a little more for the type of performance you're talking about.  A little more than $100 you could get a 1050ti or a RX470.  For $200 you can get a 1060 or RX480.

Used it really depends.  I guess some 960 deals might go down to $100 around now.  But that would be used and if you're going that route just get a 1050ti.

A $100 dollar budget is going to seriously cripple any reasonable chance you have at a major video card upgrade.  If you want to stick with AMD you would have to up your budget and look at something along the lines of a RX 480.  Something along these lines;

Asus Dual Fan Radeon RX 480 OC Edition

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=14-126-135&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=GD011117&cm_mmc=EMC-GD011117-_-index-_-Item-_-14-126-135

I guess that other alternative under $100 option would be a used HD 6870 and crossfire them.  Your motherboard supports crossfire, but unsure what brand PSU you have.  If it's a decent power supply then the 700W would handle it.  I've found some used HD 6870s on eBay from reputable sellers in the $50 - $70 price range.

Used is definitely the way to go to keep the budget low.

On the AMD side, HD 7970's have been on the $100 or even lower for a good many years, which would mean you could probably find some R9 290's for $100 if you looked hard enough. Just think of R9 390's as rebadged R9 290's. Probably the slightly slower equivalent of a single GTX 970 on NVIDIA's side (which I don't recommend, personally, even though others would), which in turn is a slightly slower equivalent of the RX 480 on the AMD side.

In terms of your HD 6870, the R9 290 is at least 150% better overall than what you have now, and would be more than capable of running Diablo3 and Skyrim on Ultra at 1080P with even HD textures.
