nice_shoes Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 several months ago, and have been noticing what I think is a problem with my email (I have a charter.net account). My regular email program is Thunderbird, which has worked well for me for very many years. However, when I moved to Windows 10, I set-up the MAIL program as a second email program, so that I could compare its operation to Thunderbird. I've decided that I still prefer Thunderbird to the MAIL program, but I am still using them both. Here is the problem: My emails seem to be delayed before they arrive, and they seem to arrive first in the MAIL program (but still take way too long to arrive), and then much later in the Thunderbird program, sometimes several hours later. I began to notice this whenever I had to wait for a web-site to email me a confirmation of a sale, or an access code for a secure site, or an email to reset a password, etc. In the past, these kinds of emails arrived almost immediately in Thunderbird, and if I didn't see them I would just click the "Get Messages" button and they would be there. Now, it takes hours before I see them in MAIL, and then hours later they show in Thunderbird. I have checked the settings and adjusted to "Check for new messages every 1 minute". So, how do I troubleshoot this? Is the problem with charter.net? If so, why does MAIL seem to receive everything faster than Thunderbird? Could MAIL possibly be interfering with Thunderbird? AkakmanH Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 After I updated to Win 10 I also had problems with Thunderbird. I downloaded the latest and greatest and reinstalled - 45.2.0 All the problems went away. I have a client that had the same problem. Besides his own WEB site, he also uses GMail. Reinstalling also solved his problem. You do not have to delete the original. Firefox is just another browser which is also good as chrome Everyone has their preference to what browser they like. wsmwk Posted September 11, 2016 Posted September 11, 2016 (edited) If reinstalling Thunderbird helps (and it's not bad advice), that typically indicates that antivirus or some other software is mucking with Thunderbird - not liking the .exe or scanning the profile directory. One theory is that the Thunderbird update process sometimes don't allow the "other software" to properly recognize Thunderbird as a special program, deserving of special treatment. SpikeSoprano Posted September 11, 2016 Posted September 11, 2016 Make sure you have the latest version of thunderbird installed,,try to get your emails with your antivirus and windows defender turned off, if that helps it then make sure thunderbird has permissions in both. I had to switch to thunderbird when microsoft screwed up windows live mail (part of their plan to force feed w10 to people) and I do find it is not as fast to retrive new emails as I may have to wait about 2 minutes longer for them to download. I f none of the above work you may have to contact your email provider. Did you set up a dummy gmail account to see if that works better, if it dose you may want to start using that as a main account .
